As the European Union’s Strategy for people with disabilities has been extended to 2030, emphasis... more As the European Union’s Strategy for people with disabilities has been extended to 2030, emphasising the need for these people’s social inclusion, which also comprises accessibility to different information and documents, Romania has to align its legislation and best practices in order to solve its problems concerning this topic. Therefore, this paper focuses on an important aspect of social inclusion, namely Easy-to-Read (E2R) language, which is paramount for the disabled people’s access to information, culture and education. It starts by presenting the concept of Easy-to-Read across Europe, its perception and implementation by various countries, to finally delve into the current situation of Easy-to-Read in Romania. By looking at the analysis and reports on the previous governmental strategies regarding people with disabilities (and especially reading disabilities, for the purpose of this paper), it can be said that Romania still faces challenges in this respect and needs to work ...

Under the theoretical wing of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, as initiated by Lakoff and Johnson (198... more Under the theoretical wing of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, as initiated by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), in this paper we set out to comparatively investigate the conceptual metaphors used for the conceptualization of the global economic and financial crisis in English, Romanian and Serbian print and electronic media reporting in the period 2008-2010. By adopting a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural approach to metaphor analysis in popular economic and business discourse, our main aim is to establish whether the same conceptual metaphors are used in English, Romanian and Serbian for the conceptualization of the most severe economic crisis since the Great Depression, or, alternatively, whether any culture-specific aspects may be found in the three languages. Within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, as propounded by cognitive linguists (e.g. La... more Within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, as propounded by cognitive linguists (e.g. Lakoff and Johnson 1980, Kovecses 2002), in this paper we deal with the MONEY IS SOLID metaphor as linguistically instantiated in English economic terminology. Whereas money in its physical form comes in the shape of notes and coins that are tangible, visible and solid, we show that money in its more general and more abstract meaning is frequently structured conceptually by means of the MONEY IS SOLID metaphor, which is firmly grounded in our knowledge of the behaviour of solid matter. Based on a corpus of money-related terms collected mainly from several English dictionaries of economics and finance, the aim of our research is to determine and examine the various conceptual mappings the metaphor under discussion rests on.

As this paper will show, numerals are employed recurrently in ads, under several linguistic forms, not so much to indicate precision, but to catch the attention, to enhance the credibility of the advertising message and/or to make the message more emotionally loaded, in order to persuade women to buy the advertised products.

Among the causes that generate unsuccessful communication is also the inability to speak a language as close to a native speaker as possible. In any language, but especially in English, a faulty pronunciation leads to major message misunderstandings. Therefore, correct pronunciation is essential for any interpreter. The 1st year students of the bachelor's degree program "Translation-Interpreting" of the Faculty of Communication Sciences within the Politehnica University Timişoara (Romania) encounter difficulties in pronouncing English accurately. The present article identifies the causes generating this situation and proposes strategies to overcome it.

Given that terminology is essential to professional communication and practice in any field of expertise, the present paper argues in favour of integrating fundamental principles of terminology management into ESP teaching. In particular, the aim of the paper is twofold: to share the authors' experience with such an interdisciplinary approach to teaching ESP to second-year students in Communication and Public Relations at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Politehnica University of Timişoara, Romania, and to pinpoint the ways in which practical terminology work, carried out by our students among other more traditional ESP specific activities, greatly benefits future Public Relations (PR) specialists.

Communication intertwingles two distinct, but interrelated areas: language, on the one hand, and ... more Communication intertwingles two distinct, but interrelated areas: language, on the one hand, and the system based on rules, beliefs and socio-cultural practices, on the other. The breakthrough of the new communication technologies in our daily lives has lead to new social practices and to less accurate messages in terms of the displayed linguistic and discoursal features. Spelling and punctuation mistakes, vocabulary and language mistakes, discoursal mistakes have been noticed in the messages transmitted by the nowadays teenagers who are ardent users of various social networks. This is the very reason for which the PR students need to develop written communication skills. In order to fulfill this purpose, we have conceived a written communication guide made up of three chapters. One of the chapters deals mainly with spelling and punctuation rules, the other two focus on the interrelationship between language and social norms. The guide abounds in examples of faulty communication to be discussed and analysed, and in exercises dealing with the message construction, placement, customization, etc.

Nowadays, precise specialised communication is impossible without appropriate terminology. The pr... more Nowadays, precise specialised communication is impossible without appropriate terminology. The present paper explores some key aspects related to the compilation and management of a terminological database (or termbase) in the field of landscape architecture (LA) and aims at highlighting the imperative need for such a tool to support the effective exchange of knowledge and information in a professional setting. The first two sections outline the present-day status of landscape architecture as an interdisciplinary field par excellence, as well as of landscape architecture terminology. The third section describes the most essential aspects regarding termbase design and data management in the elaboration of a database for landscape architecture terminology in English and Romanian, while the last one focuses on the advantages of such a termbase to LA professionals as well as to other types of users.

In this paper we deal with the MONEY IS A LIQUID metaphor as linguistically instantiated in econo... more In this paper we deal with the MONEY IS A LIQUID metaphor as linguistically instantiated in economic terminology in English, Serbian and Romanian from the perspective of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, as propounded by cognitive linguists (Lakoff and Johnson 1980; Lakoff 1987; Kövecses 2002; etc.). The main aim of this cross-cognitive and cross-linguistic analysis is to establish whether the three languages share the same conceptualisations of some important financial concepts based on the LIQUID metaphor, or alternatively, whether they exhibit any crosscultural differences. Since the mind is embodied and our bodily experience with liquids (water in particular) is universal, we expect to find little difference across the three languages.

Social media have developed at a rapid pace since the beginning of the 21 st century and have und... more Social media have developed at a rapid pace since the beginning of the 21 st century and have undoubtedly come to play an integral part in the social and professional life of billions of people worldwide, defining many of our communication habits and affecting the way we talk. As the title suggests, the present paper centers on social media terminology in English and focuses on those social media terms that have become buzzwords-that is, terms which have migrated into general language and which are used in everyday communication. In particular, the aim of this paper is to discuss the status of these widely used linguistic units from a terminology perspective, i.e. whether they are terms or words, and to examine three term-formation patterns characteristic of widely used social media vocabulary: terminologization, conversion and derivation.

Our main aim is to establish whether the names of the same animals are used in the two languages to conceptualise women and their various characteristics (particularly physical appearance and character traits), or alternatively, whether the two languages exhibit any linguistic or conceptual differences in this regard.
