The Role of Norms and Electronic Institutions in Multi-Agent Systems: The HARMONIA Framework (Paperback)(Series: Whitestein Series in Software Agent Technologies and Autonomic Computing).

The agent-mediated electronic institutions is a new and promising field. Work is focused in social concepts such as norms and institutions in order to provide normative frameworks to restrict or guide the behaviour of software agents.

A mobile platform in intelligent environments (skilled-care facilities and home-care), controlled and managed by a multi-level architecture, is proposed to support patients and caregivers to increase self-dependency in activities of daily living.

At the same time, organisational frameworks can be used in games to provide flexibility, adaptiveness, or social-awareness. In this paper, we propose an extension of our cOncienS framework to support emergent narrative in games with two objectives: 1) provide socialawareness in emergent narrative by means of an organisational model, and 2) create convincing dynamic and flexible storytelling in games. Multi-agent Systems offer a computing paradigm where properties such as autonomy, adaptability or flexibility are basic in the construction of agent-based solutions. However most of current implementations are not flexible enough to cope with important changes in the environment or information loss. In this paper we propose to introduce abductive reasoning mechanisms in BDI agents and show how such agents are able to operate with partial models of the environment.

More sophistication, in response to business requirements, does of course not make it easier to use or to control. In particular, business processes demand resilience and real-time adaptation in the face of changing business requirements, incorporation of alternative services and finding suitable substitutes when those needed are unavailable.

The aim of this work is to show how a multi-agent approach allows us to describe and implement the model, and how UCTx is capable of dealing with an Agent Mediated Institution for the Exchange of Human Tissues among Hospitals for Transplantation. Also UCTx will act as the representative of the hospital in the transactions.

The LPPODs framework embeds in a unified way several aspects of common-sense reasoning, nonmonotonocity, preferences, and uncertainty, where each part is underpinned by a well established formalism.

There is a large body of research on software services, but the issues of communication and dynamic reconfiguration have received little attention, as have adaptation to environment and dynamic combination of service building blocks into new applications. Here, we present the approach of the FP7 ALIVE project to the use of formal models of coordination and organisation mechanisms to deliver a flexible, high-level means to describe the structure of interactions between services in the environment.

The pstable semantics, based on paraconsistent logic, allows to treat inconsistency programs. Moreover being closer to possibilistic inference it allows to extend the necessity-values of the clauses to be considered, causing a higher level of comparison at the moment of selecting preferred pstable models of a possibilistic ordered disjunction programs.

The aim of this work is to show how a multi-agent approach allows us to describe and implement the model, and how UCTx is capable of dealing with another multi-agent system (Carrel, an Agent Mediated Institution for the Exchange of Human Tissues among Hospitals for Transplantation) in order to meet its own goals, acting as the representative of the hospital in the negotiation.

The impact of this activity is considered to be of first importance for health and also very important in economic terms. The creation of an Institution, called Carrel, will aid in finding intelligent means for a better assignation of organs, tissues and bones banked for transplantation in human beings.

As applications and systems become more complicated, larger and built upon many different heterogeneous technologies, new types of software applications have recently emerged based on the notion of software services. Services offer a promising solution for the integration among autonomous and heterogeneous software systems, extending the Web from a distributed source of information to a distributed source of interconnected services.

With this idea in mind, in this chapter we will analyse the concept ofNorm. To do so, we will analyse the view several branches of science—such associology, economicsorlegal theory—have of it.

Some approaches are based on the creation of a social level where actors' behaviour is regulated by means of computational norms.

However, in some realistic applications which use user preferences in the reasoning, information can be pervaded with vagueness and a preference-aware reasoning process that can handle uncertainty is required.
