Dr Kamal Jaafar is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences, University of Wollongong in Dubai. He is the Program Leader for the Master of Information Technology Management, Master of Engineering Management and the Master of Engineering Asset Management.He holds BS, MPhil and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from the Ashcroft International Business School in Cambridge. He also undertook studies in international relations at Harvard University. In 2004, he was honoured by Prince Charles as a Fellow of the Cambridge Overseas Trust. In 2005 his research won first prize at the Royal College of Physicists in London organised by KRSF. Dr Jaafar he has been honoured by the Lebanese government for his academic achievements. His research interests focuses on seismic design and safety implementations for concrete structures. His research has been published in well known engineering journals such as the ACI Journal, Canadian Journal for Civil Engineers, and Magazine of Concrete Research. He has presented his research at various international conferences in UK, USA, Greece and Italy.Dr Jaafar is a corporate consultant and a trainer in Project Management

This requires an increase in the column size relative to the beams, and more attention to reinforcement detailing [l]. The intention is that under strong lateral earthquake motion, plastic hinges form in the beams adjacent to the column. The hinges at the beam-ends will be subjected to severe cracking and damage during the earthquake. The question then arises whether the damaged hinge zone will retain enough shear strength to hold up the beams and the floors after the earthquake. The end hinge zones, having been bent well into the failure region both ways, will be cracked right through top to bottom, and concrete may well have spalled away from both faces when under compression. Also the rebars may well have buckled top and bottom. So it seems likely that the shear strength will have been greatly reduced. Binding of the compression zone, or of entire columns, is of course fairly common already in seismic design of concrete structures. Often spirals of steel, even interlocking spirals, are used. The question addressed here is whether such spirals are useful to carry shear in beams, and in particular whether they can usefully improve the residual shear strength at hinges after severe cyclic bending.

Project progress is an apprehension for every project, as it indicates how the project is likely ... more Project progress is an apprehension for every project, as it indicates how the project is likely to meet the associated milestones. Utilizing collected data from archived projects can assist managers to envisage project progress. By leveraging the power of data analytics, this research attempts to highlight data trends based on data collected from 279 infrastructure projects in the UAE. Specifically, this research rigorously analyses the relationships between project budget, duration, and progress using K-means clustering techniques and hypothesis testing. We then provide predictive models using Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average – ARIMA and Multivariate regression models that allow managers to predict with a 99.15% accuracy the monthly progress of an infrastructure project over the next 3 months. This research paper provides project managers with a comprehensive framework that combines data analytics techniques with agility practices to predict short term project progress in order to take proactive measures on the different influencing factors.

Its purpose in members that are not subjected to significant shear loading is to provide proper confinement for concrete, and eliminate buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement bars. If spirals are to be used as both a shear resister and confining enabler for reinforced concrete beams, then under combined action of moment and shear, spirals will be required to provide or contribute to proper shear resistance. Hence a proper assessment for spiral shear contribution is required.

A detailed structured survey was conducted, the data acquired were tested through several descriptive and inferential statistical analysis and as a result there was an empirical evidence to the proposed relationship. The results of this research show that project based organizations should give more attention to the effect of culture on the way projects being managed, and should conduct cultural training as well as implementing processes and policies that targets this effect.

To fulfil sustainability requirements partial substitution of energy-consuming Portland cement wi... more To fulfil sustainability requirements partial substitution of energy-consuming Portland cement with supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), like fly ash (FA) or ground-granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) is more and more applied. However, SCM in cementitious matrix affects the hydration process in early stages that results in self desiccation, crack propagation, negatively affecting strength and durability. These processes may be mitigated by the introduction of internal curing. The concept is to provide internal water reservoirs like Superabsorbent Polymers (SAP), evenly distributed in matrix, which maintain saturation within the cement paste capillaries and gradually provide water for cement hydration. This study aims to assess the effects of two SAPs on mortars' (containing FA and GGBS) consistency and mechanical properties, the main characteristics considered in practice. SAPs influence consistency and mechanical properties and their characteristics (WAC, size and shape, and chemical composition) determine their effects and scope. In general, SAPs reduce consistency. In this study addition of SAPs results in slight flexural and compressive strengths reduction. However, the mix composition, its ingredients, and proportions change the concentration of ions in pore solution that can affect mortar properties to a higher extend.
