The data collection and analysis for this research included an extensive literature review, the substance of which forms this report. This document provides an overview of the significant literature relevant to the research conducted by ascilite and should be read in conjunction with the final report. Additional literature can be found in Appendix A: Additional resources, and within the attached bibliography.

The research investigated resource identification and contribution, engagement with the repository and user community, and associated peer review and commentary processes. This article focuses on the data obtained and recommendations developed for engagement of potential end users. it reports a literature review and findings, including an international perspective on the alTc exchange, with specific focus on prospective user needs, contexts of use and policies necessary to facilitate engagement of the higher education sector with the alTc exchange.

(Carrick Institute, 2006). One aspect of the role of this institution is to establish the Carrick Exchange, "a new online service that will provide learning and teaching resources and functions to support communication and collaboration across the national and international higher education sector" (Carrick Institute, 2007a). This paper provides an overview of the purpose of the Carrick Exchange and will focus on the research contribution of ascilite, a professional association in Australia, in the first and second stages of the project development.

In Australia there is no dedicated national repository or community available for the higher education sector that provides a cross disciplinary forum for sharing ideas and resources about learning and teaching, and for cross-institutional collaboration. The Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is well placed to address this gap by developing the Carrick Exchange (see . Utilising the current expansion and availability of Web 2.0 services, the Carrick Exchange can support the development of a national and international community to achieve these goals and meet the Institute's objectives. In particular the Carrick Exchange will provide an avenue to demonstrate the values of inclusivity by "assisting the development of networks and communities which support higher education staff who have a direct impact on the advancement of learning and teaching" and through the focus on long-term systemic change (Carrick Institute website). The Carrick Exchange is seen by many in the sector as a major initiative with the potential to significantly improve the profile of teaching and learning.

The Exchange was designed to provide access to a repository of shared learning and teaching resources, work spaces for team members engaged in collaborative projects, and communication and networking services. The Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) established the Exchange for those who teach, manage and lead learning and teaching in higher education. As part of the research conducted to inform the development of the Exchange, models for peer review of educational resources were evaluated. For this, a design based research approach was adopted. Findings from the literature and feedback from key practitioners and leaders within the sector are discussed in this paper. Finally, key recommendations for implementation are identified.

The project focused on developing leadership capacity of subject coordinators to provide supportive contexts for sessional staff to enhance their knowledge of teaching practice and contribute to subject improvement through a team approach. An action learning approach and notions of distributed leadership underpinned the activities of the teaching teams in the program. This paper provides an overview of a practical approach, led by the subject coordinator, to engaging sessional staff through the facilitation of a supportive network within the teaching team. It addresses some of the gaps identified in the recent literature which includes lack of role clarity for all members of the team and provides some examples of initiatives that teams engaged with to address some of th...

While multiple theories abound about leadership outside HE, it is claimed that academic leadership is different as it exists in a highly specialised and professional, non hierarchical environment. This has led to much discussion about what ...

While multiple theories of leadership exist, the Higher Education sector requires a less hierarchical approach that takes account of its specialised and professional context. This paper explores how an action self enabling tool, developed from research into the experience of several higher education institutions, can be used to support a distributed leadership process to build leadership capacity. While the focus of ...

ABSTRACT Changes facing higher education from increased government, student and community demands... more ABSTRACT Changes facing higher education from increased government, student and community demands are resulting in a greater focus on leadership within universities. Attempts to adapt to higher education theory that underpins leadership in other sectors have been criticised for failing to recognise its unique role in the development of creative and innovative thinking required to increase and exchange knowledge. What is needed is a new approach to leadership that goes beyond individual control and management bureaucracy to embrace more sharing and collaboration. One such approach is distributed leadership; however, existing research into distributed leadership in higher education has been criticised for being normative and less democratic than is suggested in its theorisation. The research for this paper focuses on the reflections of participants in projects designed to use distributed leadership to build leadership capacity in learning and teaching in Australian higher education. The outcome was a resource design

ABSTRACT Over the last 20 years, the tertiary education sector has adopted new administrative man... more ABSTRACT Over the last 20 years, the tertiary education sector has adopted new administrative management approaches, with the aim of improving accountable and strategic focus. Over the same period, the question of how to build leadership capacity to improve learning and teaching and research outcomes has led to discussion on what constitutes academic leadership. While both these advances are needed, what is missing is integration between the two such that academics and professional staff are engaged collaboratively to achieve learning and teaching and research outcomes that are accountable within a strategic focus. This article builds on research into the use of distributed leadership to build leadership for learning and teaching that resulted in the design of a conceptual framework for distributed leadership. Based on this conceptual framework, it proposes a conceptual blended leadership approach to engage academics and professional staff working in collaboration.
