Sydnones are unusual mesoionic compounds containing a five-membered heterocyclic ring. Generally for stability, substitution at the N-3 position by an aromatic fragment is necessary. In the title compound, C(10)H(9)N(3)O(3), the aromatic substitutent is 2-acetamido-phenyl. The two planar ring fragments are twisted relative to one another, with a inter-planar angle of 63.13 (5)°. The mol-ecules are packed into the unit cell via π-π inter-actions between the phenyl rings [inter-planar separation = 3.4182 (4) Å] and between the sydnone rings [inter-planar separation = 3.2095 (4) Å]. N-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding is also found inter-nally and externally to the mol-ecule.

A route for the introduction of functional groups to poly(ether ether ketone) analogues, via a reactivity ratio controlled polycondensation process, has been developed. The reactivity differences, toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions, of the three electrophilic sites in 3,4',5-trifluorobenzophenone, 1, affords the opportunity to prepare functionalized B 2-type monomers in situ, followed by polycondensation with the appropriate bisphenol to prepare the corresponding linear polymer. The reactivity differences in 1 were probed via a combination of 13 C and 19 F NMR spectroscopy along with model reactions using m-cresol as the nucleophile. Reaction of 1 with 1.03 molar equivalents of a series of phenols provided the desired B 2-type monomers in high selectivity. The B 2-type monomers were then converted to the linear polymers by reaction with Bisphenol-A and their structures were confirmed via NMR spectroscopy. The thermal properties were evaluated by a combination of thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.

Digital mapping (also referred to as digital cartography) is the process by which a collection of data is compiled and formatted into a visual image i.e. the creation and analysis of maps through the use of computers. As such, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are an integral tool for cartography. The primary function of this technology is to produce maps that give accurate representations of a particular area, detailing major road arteries and other points of interest. The technology also allows the calculation of distances from one place to another and has made it easy to build sophisticated and interactive maps that can be disseminated (online) to a large number of people easily.

Hospital and community-acquired infections are a serious problem worldwide often leading to increased deaths, costs and other problems. Hand hygiene has been promoted as the most important way to prevent these infections. The use of hand sanitizers is one of the ways to address the barriers to effective hand hygiene. In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial efficacy of some popular hand sanitizers sold in Ilorin. The well-variant of the agar diffusion test was used to evaluate the efficacy of the products against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Hygel alone inhibited all the test organisms with zones of inhibition ranging between 14.3mm and 28.0mm while Dettol was only effective against P. aeruginosa (14.5mm). The other products (SKP and Samcleans) were not active against any of the test organisms. Hygel and Dettol were bacteriostatic at 100% concentration (MIC) and none was bactericidal. In vivo tests to determine the efficacy of these two in reducing bacterial counts from hands of subjects showed mean percentage cfu reduction of 89.9% for Hygel and 73.8% for Dettol. There was no significant difference in the efficacy of the two products in this regard. Despite the claims of efficacy and 99.9% bacterial count reduction by hand sanitizer manufacturers, there still exists a need for verification of these claims by regulatory bodies and for the enforcement of good quality control measures.
