In this paper we aim to describe with distinctness the creation and building of trust in ISAs and thus, set the foundations for our future research where we intend to examine the importance of trust in international joint ventures that include Greek business partners. We attempt to elucidate the multidimensional concept of trust and to emphasize its significant role for the success of ISAs, by systematically examining the various mechanisms through which trust may be created and strengthened between alliance partners. Furthermore, we stress some important features of alliance management which are noteworthy from the standpoint of building trust. In order to explain the procedure of creation and development of trust, we also present some contemporary and distinguished examples of trust creation from the relevant international literature. Finally, we present the conclusions and some suggestions for further research.

Design/methodology/approach To address the twofold purpose of the study, we conduct an integrative review of 31 peer-reviewed journal articles in the international business (IB) and FF literature on COVID-19, FFs and internationalisation. Findings COVID-19 brought changes in IB strategies, IB relationships and human resource management. In responding and/or adapting to those changes, during and post-COVID, FFs face and are expected to face challenges that mainly refer to FFs’ transition to digitalisation and the simultaneous preservation of socio-emotional wealth dimensions while maintaining their international presence. The authors suggest that future research explores the role of digitalisation in achieving FFs’ internationalisation, IB relationship building activities and training and leading international employees. Further contextual factors (e.g. succession issues, family structures) should also be accounted for when exploring such post-COVID IB phenomena. Originality/value This study comprises an initial attempt to encompass the interface of FF internationalisation and COVID-19. It also proposes research directions that are likely to set the stage in FFs’ post-COVID internationalisation research.

Trust among foreign partners and knowledge transfer are identified in the literature as crucial factors for satisfactory ISA performance. This paper extends previous research (Rotsios et al., 2018, 2019) on these two important parameters. Based on aspects from the Social Exchange Theory and the Resource Based View, we explore a) the perceived level of Greek managers' trust towards their foreign partners, and b) the perceived level of the knowledge that Greek companies have acquired from their participation in ISAs. A quantitative approach is adopted, and through a questionnaire survey, a sample of 171 Greek ISAs operating in the region of South East Europe is examined. This study contributes to International Business (IB) literature and sheds light on trust and knowledge transfer in ISAs in an underresearched region. Furthermore, this research enhances the understanding on issues related to trust among ISA partners and knowledge transfer in ISAs. In addition, it contributes to the limited number of regional IB studies. Finally, the empirical findings are discussed and managerial implications are presented, while areas for further research are also proposed.

Despite the fact that ISAs often fail to meet the goals set by the partners, their use has been rapidly increasing over the past two decades. A number of Greek enterprises seeking to expand their business activities abroad have formed ISAs with local partners, mostly in South East Europe. There is a general agreement on the role of trust on ISAs' successful operation and positive outcomes. Furthermore, the construct of trust becomes even more important in the volatile environment of South East Europe. In this paper, three propositions are developed in order to investigate the impact of senior management commitment, control mechanisms and goal compatibility on trust among ISA partners. In addition, we suggest that trust has a positive impact on effective knowledge transfer from the partners to the ISAs. The objective of this paper is to lead to a better understanding of the above factors and to set the ground for future empirical research on the importance of trust in ISAs.

Based on elements from the Resource Based View and Social Exchange Theory, Greek IJVs operating in South East Europe are empirically examined. This research contributes to the literature in four ways: First, by showing a positive impact of the level of trust the foreign partner has towards the local IJV partner on (a) successful knowledge transfer to the IJV and (b) expected benefits from knowledge transfer to the IJV. Second, by revealing a positive impact of the degree of partner compatibility on (a) successful knowledge transfer to the IJV and (b) the level of trust the foreign partner has towards the local IJV partner. Third, by providing empirical evidence regarding the above impacts in new national environments. Finally, it contributes by enhancing the understanding of knowledge transfer from the foreign partner to IJVs in emerging markets.

The role of trust on alliances’ successful operation and performance has been highlighted in existing international business literature. In this paper, three propositions are developed in order to investigate the impact of (a) communication quality, (b) partner complementarity and (c) foreign partner’s cultural sensitivity on the level of trust the foreign partner has towards the local ISA partner. The objective of this research is the attainment of an in-depth comprehension of the above factors. Furthermore, it provides the ground for future research to examine the importance of trust on ISAs in the South-East (SE) Europe region.

Moreover, this study breaks new ground by examining the impact of personal characteristics on the animosity towards products originating in a specific country. For example, what impact would attributes like the educational background of the respondent, his or her age, gender, and knowledge of foreign languages have, in moderating this animosity? The findings of the study show strong support for the animosity construct and the modifying power of personal characteristics.

The selection of the appropriate partner constitutes one of the major factors of success for the IJV. There have been several research efforts, which were concerned with the study of criteria needed for the selection of a partner but not with the development of an appropriate quantitative model. The objective of this paper is to present a quantitative model, based on the goal programming technique, which uses appropriate criteria to evaluate potential candidates and leads to the selection of the optimal partner.

The research employs the institutional entrepreneurship theory. It is hypothesized that, in emerging economies, MNEs presence reduces the level of corruption. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that the faster the rate of increase of the number of MNEs in the country, the faster the increase of pervasive corruption level. The sample consists of seventeen emerging economies. The period of analysis extends from 2012 to 2019. The fix effect model has been applied to the panel dataset to test the model hypotheses. Results indicate that MNEs presence reduces the level of corruption in the said host emerging economies. On the contrary, the hypothesis that the higher the rate of increase of the number of MNEs in the host emerging economies, the higher the level of pervasive corruption in such economies is not supported.

This paper examines these two parameters in IJVs operating in South East Europe. A sample of Greek IJVs is examined, and conclusions on the above matters are drawn. The focus is on the perceptions of Greek entrepreneurs and executives in regard to the success of knowledge transfer to IJVs in which their company participates, their overall satisfaction from the transfer process, and its importance for their enterprise. Additionally, based on aspects from the social exchange theory, the perceived level of trust toward their foreign partner is explored in terms of the extent and the quality of communication among them and the managers’ willingness to work closely to achieve common goals and their shared vision. The empirical findings are discussed, and their importance for researchers and entrepreneurs is analyzed. Finally, topics for further research are proposed.

In today's competitive markets the use of complementary resources in collaborative agreements, is for many enterprises the only means to expand internationally and gain global competitiveness. For many of these firms the importance of knowledge has increased and so has the relevant research and literature. Knowledge is regarded by many as a key competitive factor that contributes to the success of IJVs. It is widely accepted that the reasons for IJV failure are often knowledge related, a fact that underlines the importance of knowledge and knowledge transfer in the success of IJVs. An organization's effective learning process depends on a number of parameters related to the external and internal environment. These parameters, that facilitate the firm's ability to acquire, absorb and use knowledge efficiently, such as the trust between partners, the education level, the cultural distance, the access to knowledge, the prior international experience and the managerial commitment, will be described and explored. Furthermore, the ways to transfer knowledge and the contextual factors affecting this process are discussed. The objectives of the paper are, first, to present and analyze the process of knowledge transfer and the effective learning process in IJVs, and, second, to present a number of hypotheses on the contextual factors that have an impact on knowledge transfer in IJVs where at least one of the parent firms is Greek. These hypotheses will be tested empirically at a later stage.
