Οι χώρες και οι λαοί της Ευρώπης ξεδίπλωσαν με υπερηφάνεια σημαίες και χρώματα με λιοντάρια και αετούς, ήλιους, αστέρια και φεγγάρια και όσα δεν βάζει ο νους. Η Ευρώπη ξεχάστηκε με τη χαρά και την έξαψη εντός και εκτός σταδίων και σχεδόν η μισή ΕΕ έπαιξε μπάλα στα τελικά. Σε καιρούς ζοφερούς, το ποδόσφαιρο τέτοιου επιπέδου είναι λυτρωτικό.
Όπως τότε, όταν μετά τον Β΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο εμφανίστηκε ένα περίεργο λιοντάρι για να μη φοβούνται πια οι Ευρωπαίοι στη ζούγκλα του κόσμου. Μηχανικό ήταν και έπρεπε να το κουρδίζουν. Με τέτοιες ιστορίες έμαθε να πορεύεται η ευρωπαϊκή ολοκλήρωση. Η ΕΕ να θέλει να είναι ελκυστική και ο κόσμος να κουράζεται εύκολα με τους ευρωπαϊκούς εγωισμούς.
Σε τούτο το ταξίδι, άλλοτε συναρπαστικό και άλλοτε βαρετό, το ποδόσφαιρο διηγείται εξίσου όμορφες και αταίριαστες ιστορίες για την Ευρώπη που δεν λέει αιώνες τώρα να ημερέψει ο νους της και να λογικευτεί αναπολώντας μόνο το παρελθόν.

Όταν μάλιστα αυτές οι δοκιμασίες συμπίπτουν, τότε δεν ανακαλύπτουν μόνο άλλους κόσμους γύρω τους, αλλά και ο μονάκριβος δικός τους βιώνει συθέμελα μια κρίση ταυτότητας. Οι γιορτές και οι κρίσεις δεν έλειψαν ποτέ στην Ευρώπη, μα είχαν να κάνουν πάντοτε με πολλές οικογένειες ξεχωριστά. Πολλά χρόνια τώρα, η ευρωπαϊκή οικογένεια είναι μία και ετοιμάζεται να γιορτάσει την εκατονταετηρίδα της βιώνοντας συνάμα μια κρίση μέχρι το μεδούλι της.
Σ’ αυτό το σπονδυλωτό μυθιστόρημα όλα ζυγίζονται και ανατοκίζονται με περισσή καχυποψία και αφέλεια. Στον αποπάνω κόσμο, οι τεχνοκράτες και οι γραφειοκράτες της ευρωπαϊκής οικογένειας θέλουν να τελειώνουν με το πρότζεκτ του εορτασμού του παρελθόντος, αφού ασχολούνται αποκλειστικά με το μέλλον. Στον αποκάτω κόσμο, ο σκύλος Άργος και το αφεντικό του ο κύριος Πένερ έχουν ως πρότζεκτ να επιβιώνουν καθημερινά με τα σκουπίδια και τα αλλόκοτα της ζωής στο στέκι τους απέναντι από το Μέγαρο των Θεσμών. Όσο για τον συγγραφέα, το δικό του πρότζεκτ είναι να τελειώσει τη βιογραφία της κραταιάς ευρωπαϊκής οικογένειας, που του έχει εμπιστευτεί τα απομνημονεύματά της. Όλοι κάνουν έτσι το κουμάντο τους και, τρέμοντας τη ζυγαριά της λογιστικής, αναζητούν παρηγοριά και λύτρωση στη μνήμη της ζωγραφικής και της μουσικής. Οι ζωές όλων είναι πια υπόθεση ενός πρότζεκτ!

This paper is rooted in the sui generis dialogue between visions of and architectural plans for t... more This paper is rooted in the sui generis dialogue between visions of and architectural plans for the European states in the aftermath of WWII. Plans for the construction of an abnormal political entity among the normal nation-states with their symbols and their orna-ments, and also plans for their citizens, with its programmes for inte-gration and inclusion in nation-states both within the European heart-land and also on the Balkan perimeter. It presents their progress from the normal in every instance to the abnormal, and vice versa. Its prin-cipal interlocutors are a set of “abnormal individuals,” Michel Fou-cault and Bertolt Brecht, Jean Monnet and Robert Schumann, together with all European politicians and citizens, normal or otherwise. What emerges as its principal conclusion is the adaptive re-alignment of power relations between the Zeitgeist and the genius loci in Europe and the Balkans for the governance of European integration.

Όλα μαζί γίνονται ένα για να διηγηθούν ιστορίες από τη μεγάλη εθνική στιγμή του 1821 στον 21ο αιώνα. Ιστορίες γνωστές και άγνωστες, βολικές και άβολες, κανονικές και αταίριαστες. Έτσι απλά να κάνει ο χρόνος στάση και να ξαναπαιχτεί εκείνη η σχολική παράσταση από τα χρόνια τα αθώα, τα μαθητικά. The book presents the dialectic relation between two major phenomena of the 20th and 21st century... more The book presents the dialectic relation between two major phenomena of the 20th and 21st century: the European Union as a sui generis institution of international politics, and football as a sports game affecting a multilevel integration of individual and collective experiences.
Examining the place and role of the EU in the whirl of post-2008 economic turbulence, the book draws its imageries and rhetorical tools from the realm of football in all its political, economic and social manifestations and dimensions. Reflecting on the ‘paradise lost’ of European integration, the book reflects on the historical process of this European dream by way through the metaphorical lens of a similar ‘game’ played in the realm of EU politics and governance.
The book traces the influences and interactions, the regularities and exceptions relevant to two phenomena that continue to unite and divide, to topple and rule the everydayness of all their allegiants, players, leaders, supporters, peoples. It explores the engagement and vision of their individual and collective integration in the realms of politics and football relevant to the historically and culturally specific conditions in which these ‘games’ are played.
This book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the EU, this ‘odd team’ of international relations. As something more than a mere union of states or another form of international organization, the EU is a unique case of theoretical analysis and practice beyond any other known form of conventional governance. To make it more intelligible, the book uses the tropes and modes of football as something more than a mere game.
As its main compass-team in the exploration of the EU, and beyond, the book uses the special case of Barcelona FC. This analytical option – as opposed to the cases of other, equally historical and popular teams – is foremost based on the particularity of its own motto: Més que un club (More than a football club), defining its scope and mission in the game of football, among others. The book examines the conceptual development of this particular motto, along with the respective course of development of the EU’s own motto indicative of its identity and mission, ‘United in diversity’.
Moreover, and in order to better represent this peculiar ‘game’ in the fields of football and politics, the book ‘mobilizes’ the work of Eduardo Galeano, a renowned author, analyst of socio-political phenomena and football fan.

Examining the place and role of the EU in the whirl of post-2008 economic turbulence, the book draws its imageries and rhetorical tools from the realm of football in all its political, economic and social manifestations and dimensions. Reflecting on the ‘paradise lost’ of European integration, the book reflects on the historical process of this European dream by way through the metaphorical lens of a similar ‘game’ played in the realm of EU politics and governance.
The book traces the influences and interactions, the regularities and exceptions relevant to two phenomena that continue to unite and divide, to topple and rule the everydayness of all their allegiants, players, leaders, supporters, peoples. It explores the engagement and vision of their individual and collective integration in the realms of politics and football relevant to the historically and culturally specific conditions in which these ‘games’ are played.
This book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the EU, this ‘odd team’ of international relations. As something more than a mere union of states or another form of international organization, the EU is a unique case of theoretical analysis and practice beyond any other known form of conventional governance. To make it more intelligible, the book uses the tropes and modes of football as something more than a mere game.
As its main compass-team in the exploration of the EU, and beyond, the book uses the special case of Barcelona FC. This analytical option – as opposed to the cases of other, equally historical and popular teams – is foremost based on the particularity of its own motto: Més que un club (More than a football club), defining its scope and mission in the game of football, among others. The book examines the conceptual development of this particular motto, along with the respective course of development of the EU’s own motto indicative of its identity and mission, ‘United in diversity’.
Moreover, and in order to better represent this peculiar ‘game’ in the fields of football and politics, the book ‘mobilizes’ the work of Eduardo Galeano, a renowned author, analyst of socio-political phenomena and football fan.

This book records and analyses the data that give shape to EU foreign relations as a whole in view of their interrelation with the issues of traditional foreign policy of the member states and the European integration sought for in foreign policy, defense and security issues. neoliberal capitalism, the progress of European integration is thus represented as embedded in a series of choices between gratuity-charity for the plenty and profit-making for the few, never abandoning a European ‘gift economy’, which has fundamentally been an economy of exchange.
