The Collaborative Economy (CE), that is, the collaborative consumption and production of capital ... more The Collaborative Economy (CE), that is, the collaborative consumption and production of capital and labour among distributed groups supported by a digital platform, is growing rapidly and exponentially. However, it suffers from diverse challenges: (1) CE is creating high sustainability expectations for its potential to contribute to a sustainable development of society (Algar, 2007; Botsman & Rogers, 2010; Cohen & Kietzmann, 2014; Heinrichs, 2013), and for its potential to contribute to the commons and a democratization of economy (Fuster, 2016). Bryan Walsh in the Time Magazine dated March 2011 sees it as one of the ten ideas that will change the world, and a pronouncement of the European Union in January 2014 emphasizes the innovative economical and ecological role of CE. However, CE lacks a holistic framework for assessment of these sustainability and procommons qualities. (2) The disruptive impact of the best known CE model, that of corporations like Uber and Airbnb, is arousing huge controversy (Codagnone et al., 2016). Successful alternative models exist, such as open commons, and platform cooperativism, but these have received limited research attention. Our paper will provide an analysis that contributes to explore this hypothesis, and investigate how far cooperative models like platform cooperativism (Scholz, 2016; Scholz & Schneider, 2016) might be a more sustainable model for CE than those unicorn models. The investigation has two main objectives: 1) provide a framework to assess procommons qualities of collaborative economy initiatives, and 2) provide a framework of CE sustainability, assessing the potential and feasibility of platform cooperativism for CE sustainability. The framework will be applied to 10 cases of platform cooperativism model of collaborative economy, in order to have a better understanding of this model, in contrast to the more known model of unicorn. The project culminated in an exhibition at an international festival, presenting a medley of family portraits, field notes, personal narratives and scenic elements. Central to the exhibition were eight chosen portraits of local mothers, paying tribute to Dolors Farrés, a revered ‘meta-mother’ figure in the community, whose wider social and metaphorical significance was progressively uncovered by the four co-authors. The exhibition's opening day featured an interpretive dance, transforming the photographic experience into a multimodal exploration. Post-exhibition, the visitor responses collected in chapbooks were transformed into a large-format photography book, and served as qualitative data for this study. Our creative, multi-voiced and evocative approach to ethnography seeks to shed light on a rich array of individual and collective perspectives around mothering within a rural setting.

Mayoritariamente, la literatura de este ámbito se ha centrado en estudiar casos de plataformas extractivistas dejando en segundo plano las alternativas. Este artículo analiza el origen, las fortalezas y los principales retos que caracterizan las plataformas vinculadas al cooperativismo de plataforma y/o a los comunes digitales. Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo un análisis empírico de veintidós plataformas que operan en cuatro sectores claves en la emergencia de la economía de plataforma: el servicio de taxi, el alojamiento de corta estancia, la distribución de alimentos y los servicios domésticos y de cuidado a domicilio. Although fintech and collaborative funding platforms have evolved into sophisticated information ... more Although fintech and collaborative funding platforms have evolved into sophisticated information and interaction systems, it is still complex to measure their social impact, especially when it comes to public value-driven platforms such as civic crowdfunding. Addressing this problematic question, at both the conceptual and technical levels, in this article we present a novel dynamic system framework and implementation for assessing the social impact of crowdfunding campaigns through the Goteo.org platform. Our contribution derives from an interdisciplinary team effort led by the non-profit Platoniq Foundation (founder and main promoter of the Goteo platform) in which social researchers and software developers worked together in order to improve the accuracy and visibility of crowdfunding campaigns in relation to their social impact. This approach for calculating and visualizing social impact, as a proof-of-concept, is based on a methodological framework inspired by previous advancements in the non-profit and social responsibility sectors, integrating user-generated data and external data sources and indicators. As a recently launched system, in its current implementation on Goteo it integrates the first version of a virtual calculator embedded in the campaign design interface. This new digital affordance allows project promoters to better estimate monetary and non-monetary-related impact regarding social value, public return of investment and other specific concepts related to their initiative if successfully crowdfunded. Results of this social impact calculator, which translates diverse value variables and proxies into economic estimations, is also made visible to all users as potential campaign donors, and operates in connection with previously implemented SDGs indicators and social, democratic and ecological footprints in the Goteo system.

La Economia Social y Solidaria (ESS) es un termino que esta en pleno proceso de definicion y que ... more La Economia Social y Solidaria (ESS) es un termino que esta en pleno proceso de definicion y que suma la conceptualizacion de la Economia Social y la Economia Solidaria. El desarrollo de la ESS, como alternativa al capitalismo, se alimenta de tradiciones de geografias distintas pero interconectadas entre los continentes. En este articulo resenamos la conceptualizacion de la ESS y su articulacion en Brasil y Cataluna —donde tienen un fuerte arraigo— para identificar que organizaciones y herramientas resultan claves en la expansion en estos territorios. El analisis permite observar como se ha articulado la ESS en cada territorio, que herramientas se han desarrollado para evaluar su implantacion y que aprendizajes pueden ser de utilidad para su escalabilidad global. La investigacion bibliografica, documental y estadistica es la base metodologica principal, seguida de un analisis correlacionado con el objetivo de obtener representaciones que permitan obtener resultados mas profundos y detallados, especialmente a traves de la construccion de mapas, cartogramas, graficos y tablas. Las fuentes esenciales de investigacion fueron los informes publicados por instituciones como: SENAES, SOLTEC / UFRN y PAM PAM, cuyas bases de datos estadisticos subsidiaron en gran medida el presente estudio, lo que permitio profundizar el analisis a traves de las representaciones generadas y el cruce con la entrada. Trabajo teorico y conceptual. Los resultados alcanzados nos permiten afirmar la importancia del movimiento de las economias sociales y solidarias en Brasil y Cataluna. Y a pesar de las diferencias territoriales observadas, el movimiento permanece consolidado, territorializado y articulado, siguiendo principios comunes, asi como valores y bases de operacion, con enfasis en cooperacion, asociacion, igualdad, solidaridad, colectividad, participacion, participacion ciudadana y ayuda mutua. . Incluso en el caso catalan, existe una fuerte inspiracion en la experiencia brasilena con respecto a las redes y estrategias para la difusion y el fortalecimiento del movimiento, como la red Pam a Pam.

Si haguessis nascut en una altra terra, podries ser blanc, podries ser negre… Un altre país fóra casa teva, i diries "sí" en una altra llengua. Cooperatives de consum agroecològic de plataforma AGRAÏMENTS És l'any 2010 quan m'emparro al mur de la investigació. L'atracció pel terreny que tinc al davant és tanta que no puc deixar passar la possibilitat de saltar a explorar. Cal dir que, a l'hora de pujar aquest mur, una persona ha saltat des de l'altra banda i m'ha fet l'escaleta. És l'Ismael Peña-López. Sense ell, aquest treball no existiria. L'economia col·laborativa (EC), és a dir, el consum col·... more L'economia col·laborativa (EC), és a dir, el consum col·laboratiu i la producció de capital i mà d'obra entre grups distribuïts recolzats per una plataforma digital (P2P), està creixent de manera ràpida i exponencial. No obstant això, pateix diversos desafiaments: L’expectativa generada al voltant de les iniciatives d’EC les augura a contribuir a un desenvolupament sostenible de la societat que, al mateix temps, no sempre contribueix als béns comuns i a una democratització de l'economia. A l’hora que una declaració de la Unió Europea del gener de 2014 subratlla la capacitat d’innovació i d’aportació a l’ecologia de l’EC, és necessària una revisió holística de l’avaluació d’aquestes iniciatives per considerar el seu paper en la transformació social, econòmica i medi ambiental de la societat. L'impacte pertorbador del model CE més conegut, el de les corporacions com Uber i Airbnb, suscita una enorme controvèrsia, mentre que existeixen models alternatius reeixits, com ara els comuns digitals i el cooperativisme de la plataforma que han rebut una atenció limitada. Dr. Rosa Cerarols is a geographer and a cultural activist focused on territorial engagement in the intersection of geohumanities, feminism and cultural studies. 1 Dry Stone Night: a visual ethnography Dry stone constructions demonstrate humanity's relationship with nature since the Neolithic Age. Over millennia, diverse cultures have utilized basic landscape materials to build dry stone structures, shaping terrains and creating spaces for shelter and storage. However, the traditional and practical applications of these constructions face questions today, alongside growing challenges in their preservation. This essay presents the experimental journey of a visual ethnography process, incorporating photographic interventions and dialogues with dry stone experts. A parallel outcome of this project, 'Nit de pedra seca' ('Dry Stone Night'), was showcased at the 2022 FineArt International Photography Festival in Igualada, Barcelona, featuring works from photographers worldwide. This visual essay, a derivative of that exhibition and a subsequent book publication, invites appreciation and reconsideration of dry stone constructions from an artistic and contemporary landscape perspective.

At the same time, discussion of the platform economy usually fails to acknowledge the coexistence of different platform models and their diverse socioeconomic impact with regard to the SDGs and the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR). This paper aims to contribute to the debate on regulating platform work by testing the ‘Charter of digital workers’ rights’ arising from the Platform Labour in Urban Spaces (PLUS) European project, in three platform cooperatives: Fairbnb.coop, SMart, and Katuma. The empirical analysis and testing are based on qualitative surveys, co-creation sessions and interviews. Plataformas como Glovo, Deliveroo y UberEats dedicadas a la entrega a domicilio se han implantado... more Plataformas como Glovo, Deliveroo y UberEats dedicadas a la entrega a domicilio se han implantado en ciudades de todo el mundo. Su expansión ha ido acompañada de un impacto sobre los derechos de los trabajadores y trabajadoras, en lo que se considera capitalismo de plataforma. Aun así, existen alternativas democráticas vinculadas a la economía social y solidaria y a los comunes digitales. Este artículo analiza las calidades democráticas de cuatro plataformas alternativas de entrega a domicilio que tienen sede en Europa (CoopCycle, CILFé, Crow y Mensakas). Por un lado, los resultados muestran que estas plataformas tienen en consideración los derechos de sus trabajadores y trabajadoras y, por lo tanto, son una alternativa al capitalismo de plataforma. Por otro lado, se demuestra que estas plataformas tienen retos importantes, especialmente en relación con su sostenibilidad económica y escalabilidad.

En este articulo resenamos la conceptualizacion de la ESS y su articulacion en Brasil y Cataluna —donde tienen un fuerte arraigo— para identificar que organizaciones y herramientas resultan claves en la expansion en estos territorios. El analisis permite observar como se ha articulado la ESS en cada territorio, que herramientas se han desarrollado para evaluar su implantacion y que aprendizajes pueden ser de utilidad para su escalabilidad global. La investigacion bibliografica, documental y estadistica es la base metodologica principal, seguida de un analisis correlacionado con el objetivo de obtener representaciones que permitan obtener resultados mas profundos y detallados, especialmente a traves de la construccion de mapas, cartogramas, graficos y tablas. Las fuentes esenciales de investigacion fueron los informes publicados por instituciones como: SENAES, SOLTEC / UFRN y PAM PAM, cuyas bases de datos estadisticos subsidiaron en gran medida el presente estudio, lo que permitio profundizar el analisis a traves de las representaciones generadas y el cruce con la entrada. Trabajo teorico y conceptual. Los resultados alcanzados nos permiten afirmar la importancia del movimiento de las economias sociales y solidarias en Brasil y Cataluna. Y a pesar de las diferencias territoriales observadas, el movimiento permanece consolidado, territorializado y articulado, siguiendo principios comunes, asi como valores y bases de operacion, con enfasis en cooperacion, asociacion, igualdad, solidaridad, colectividad, participacion, participacion ciudadana y ayuda mutua. . Incluso en el caso catalan, existe una fuerte inspiracion en la experiencia brasilena con respecto a las redes y estrategias para la difusion y el fortalecimiento del movimiento, como la red Pam a Pam.

Ja fa molts anys els seus afanys amb ella un home va fer créixer. Diu que eren cent arbres al vent l'orgull d'aquell que els va fer néixer. Si haguessis nascut en una altra terra, podries ser blanc, podries ser negre… Un altre país fóra casa teva, i diries "sí" en una altra llengua. Cooperatives de consum agroecològic de plataforma AGRAÏMENTS És l'any 2010 quan m'emparro al mur de la investigació. L'atracció pel terreny que tinc al davant és tanta que no puc deixar passar la possibilitat de saltar a explorar. Cal dir que, a l'hora de pujar aquest mur, una persona ha saltat des de l'altra banda i m'ha fet l'escaleta. És l'Ismael Peña-López. Sense ell, aquest treball no existiria. La seva empatia és clau perquè una ànima inquieta dediqui el temps i l'energia que requereix una recerca com aquesta. A tu, Ismael, tot el meu agraïment. Tot i així, una tesi doctoral és un exercici que et referma constantment en els límits. Des del mateix plantejament del projecte, a les limitacions pròpies. Gràcies Mayo i Enric. La posada en pràctica d'aquesta investigació té dos puntals fonamentals. Un de directe i més concret: ajudar a l'escalabilitat del cooperativisme agroecològic a partir del paper que hi poden tenir les Tecnologies de la Informació i la Comunicació (TIC); i un segon, de derivat i més ampli: participar en el reforç de les polítiques públiques que fomenten un model de consum d'aliments econòmicament, socialment, mediambientalment i políticament més just. Formar part de l'equip impulsor de la plataforma digital cooperativa Katuma i participar, en aquests anys, en el debat entre activistes agroecologistes, cooperativistes i agents polítics és un regal immens. L'acolliment que permet realitzar el projecte a través d'un Doctorat Industrial és de gran ajuda. L'experiència, en el nostre cas, és extraordinària. L'economia col·laborativa (EC), és a dir, el consum col·... more L'economia col·laborativa (EC), és a dir, el consum col·laboratiu i la producció de capital i mà d'obra entre grups distribuïts recolzats per una plataforma digital (P2P), està creixent de manera ràpida i exponencial. No obstant això, pateix diversos desafiaments: L’expectativa generada al voltant de les iniciatives d’EC les augura a contribuir a un desenvolupament sostenible de la societat que, al mateix temps, no sempre contribueix als béns comuns i a una democratització de l'economia. A l’hora que una declaració de la Unió Europea del gener de 2014 subratlla la capacitat d’innovació i d’aportació a l’ecologia de l’EC, és necessària una revisió holística de l’avaluació d’aquestes iniciatives per considerar el seu paper en la transformació social, econòmica i medi ambiental de la societat. L'impacte pertorbador del model CE més conegut, el de les corporacions com Uber i Airbnb, suscita una enorme controvèrsia, mentre que existeixen models alternatius reeixits, com ara els comuns digitals i el cooperativisme de la plataforma que han rebut una atenció limitada. En aquest article situarem el marc de treball de l’economia col·laborativa procomú des d’una perspectiva àmplia i com una alternativa a l’Economia Col·laborativa Corporativa. Dr. Rosa Cerarols is a geographer and a cultural activist focused on territorial engagement in the intersection of geohumanities, feminism and cultural studies. 1 Dry Stone Night: a visual ethnography Dry stone constructions demonstrate humanity's relationship with nature since the Neolithic Age. Over millennia, diverse cultures have utilized basic landscape materials to build dry stone structures, shaping terrains and creating spaces for shelter and storage. However, the traditional and practical applications of these constructions face questions today, alongside growing challenges in their preservation. This essay presents the experimental journey of a visual ethnography process, incorporating photographic interventions and dialogues with dry stone experts. A parallel outcome of this project, 'Nit de pedra seca' ('Dry Stone Night'), was showcased at the 2022 FineArt International Photography Festival in Igualada, Barcelona, featuring works from photographers worldwide. This visual essay, a derivative of that exhibition and a subsequent book publication, invites appreciation and reconsideration of dry stone constructions from an artistic and contemporary landscape perspective.

At the same time, discussion of the platform economy usually fails to acknowledge the coexistence of different platform models and their diverse socioeconomic impact with regard to the SDGs and the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR). This paper aims to contribute to the debate on regulating platform work by testing the ‘Charter of digital workers’ rights’ arising from the Platform Labour in Urban Spaces (PLUS) European project, in three platform cooperatives: Fairbnb.coop, SMart, and Katuma. The empirical analysis and testing are based on qualitative surveys, co-creation sessions and interviews. Plataformas como Glovo, Deliveroo y UberEats dedicadas a la entrega a domicilio se han implantado... more Plataformas como Glovo, Deliveroo y UberEats dedicadas a la entrega a domicilio se han implantado en ciudades de todo el mundo. Su expansión ha ido acompañada de un impacto sobre los derechos de los trabajadores y trabajadoras, en lo que se considera capitalismo de plataforma. Aun así, existen alternativas democráticas vinculadas a la economía social y solidaria y a los comunes digitales. Este artículo analiza las calidades democráticas de cuatro plataformas alternativas de entrega a domicilio que tienen sede en Europa (CoopCycle, CILFé, Crow y Mensakas). Por un lado, los resultados muestran que estas plataformas tienen en consideración los derechos de sus trabajadores y trabajadoras y, por lo tanto, son una alternativa al capitalismo de plataforma. Por otro lado, se demuestra que estas plataformas tienen retos importantes, especialmente en relación con su sostenibilidad económica y escalabilidad.

Addressing this problematic question, at both, the conceptual and technical level, in this article we present a novel dynamic system framework and implementation for assessing the social impact of crowdfunding campaigns through the Goteo.org platform. Our contribution derives from an interdisciplinary team effort led by the non-profit Platoniq Foundation (founder and main promoter of the Goteo platform) in which social researchers and software developers worked together in order to improve the accuracy and visibility of crowdfunding campaigns in relation to their social impact. In recent decades there has been a rise in the use of digital technologies to support food sharin... more In recent decades there has been a rise in the use of digital technologies to support food sharing activities, such as the community supported agriculture (CSA) model. These alternative distribution networks provide ethically sourced and sustainable produce. The physical and virtual networks of CSAs are based on principles of the social and solidarity economy, a socio-political movement that shares degrowth principles by promoting equitable wealth, democratic relationships and protection of ecosystems. However, while digital technologies support alternative exchange, controversies remain on the potential political implications of their application. This chapter investigates the uptake of digital platforms by CSAs to explore their application, barriers and outcomes for degrowth. The analysis draws on extensive mapping of cooperatives across Catalonia and is grounded in participant-observation of a CSA in Barcelona. This research highlights the role of platform cooperativism to support collaborative online sharing and ensure critical technology adoption for degrowth at the same time as preventing vertical power relations.
