Georg. III 10 (4ου-5ου αι.)

I refer both to the medical and to the documentary papyri from Greco-Roman and Late Antique Egypt, in which terms relating to the Anatomy of the human body, certain diseases, medicaments, and medical tools are mentioned. The aim of the study is to shed light on the use and meaning of the metaphorical medical words in the papyri, that is: (a) to what extent the terms found in the papyrological sources are linked to those testified in the treatises of the ancient medical authors, (b) on what kind of similarity (aspect or function) the metaphors are mostly based, (c) with what specific field of the ancient medical profession (i.e. Anatomy, diseases, Pharmacology, medical instruments etc.) the metaphorical vocabulary is mostly associated.

The main interest of the article focuses on the papyrological sources, in which leucoma represents an element of differentiation. The paper also discusses the social imprint of this ocular disease in the society of Graeco-Roman Egypt and sheds light on the efforts of the patients to cure this eye condition.

Aim of this study is to detect the color terms used to describe the drugs and the sick parts of the patients’ bodies. The study helps us to come to conclusions concerning the position of color in the physicians’ and pharmacologists’ thought and works in Egypt, especially as far as the disease diagnose and the determination of the therapeutic properties of various remedies are concerned.

The existence of the wild mammal in Oxyrhynchus is probably related to Thoeris' cult in that city, while its occurrence in the text relates to its habit of raiding farm crops. This interpretation is supported by literary sources, but also by the sense of the verb ἀφανίζω, used to describe the animal's behaviour, in current lexica of ancient Greek. Additionally, an examination of textual variants of the fragment dealing with the hippopotamus' behaviour supports this interpretation and provides insights into animal-human interrelationship in Roman Egypt.

LXVII 4620 (5th/6th c.), a papyrus document which refers to a xenodocheion associated with the shrine of St. Ioustus at Oxyrhynchus. The aim of the article is to draw a connection between the forms of St. Ioustus’ veneration and the function of the charitable foundation in the framework of the shrine devoted to him. What is more, the article pursues to relate the existence of this institution with the cult of St. Ioustus as a therapeutic saint in the light of the papyrological sources, and consequently the function of the foundation as a guest house connected with the saint’s healing shrine in Oxyrhynchus, or even as a charitable infirmary associated with his church and funded by the local elite.

Cair. Zen. IV 59602, 2 from the Zenon archive. Thorough research both on the interpretations of the adjective δίδυμος in connection with the noun ὠιόν in various modern lexica of ancient Greek language and on excerpts from certain zoological treatises of Aristotle and Pliny’s 'Naturalis Historia' lead us to interpret the phrase ὠιὸν δίδυμον as ‘double-yolked egg’. The paper pursues to amplify this meaning by relating the production and use of double-yolked eggs in the δωρεά of Apollonius with a well-organised activity of domestic fowl reproduction and egg production in Apollonius’s large estate in Philadelphia. The products of the fowl breeding, that is, poultry and eggs, were to be consumed in celebrations and festivals, as papyri from the Zenon archive confirm.

Ancient Greek and Latin medical authors, naturalists, and cooks list eggs among the most nutritious foods, consumed in many ways and used as medicine against various diseases. Additionally, eggs were a symbol of fertility, birth, and life. The aim of this paper is to deal with the use of eggs as food, medicament, and magical items in the light of the medical, magical, and documentary papyri of Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Egypt. Lists of comestibles, food orders or private letters, represent great sources of information about the consumption of eggs in everyday life (e.g. egg species, ways of cooking, prices etc.), while the study of the medical papyri sheds light on the nutritional qualities and therapeutic properties of eggs. Finally, the focus on the magical papyri of Graeco-Roman Egypt is to reveal the remarkable role of eggs as substances in magical recipes and in ritual acts.

I detect expressions of salutation and condolence, which the writers of the tags addressed to the dead. The aim of the study is to place the consolatory devices among the other kinds of the ancient Greek consolatory literature, and reveal any links between the phrases of condolence and the social and religious status of the deceased and the writers of the mummy tags.
