This paper investigates the apology strategies used by Egyp non standard Arabic. Analysis of the ... more This paper investigates the apology strategies used by Egyp non standard Arabic. Analysis of the apology strategies were based on strategies developed by a number of researchers (Blum-Kulka & Olshtain). The data were collected through the use of questionnaire in the form of Discourse Completion Test which was distributed to 10 native speakers. Frequencies and percentages are considered. The findings of the study reveal that the main apology strategy used by the native speakers is “expression of apology”. This strategy consists of three sub-strategies: Expression of regret, offer of apology and request for forgiveness. The next frequent apology strategy used is “Acknowledgement of responsibility” which includes five sub-categories: explicit acknowledgement, expression of lack of intent, expression of self-deficiency, expression of embarrassment and explicit acceptance of the blame. Other strategies such as expression of concern for the hearer, offer of repair, explanation of account and others were also used, but in low frequencies.

Beberapa studi ini fokus pada Bahasa Arab, tetapi belum ada yang membahas tentang penggunaan permintaan maaf dalam dialek Irak. Selain itu, tidak satupun yang berkonsentrasi pada nilai sosial atau perbedaan gender dalam penggunaan tindak tutur dalam bahasa Arab. Penelitian ini merupakan upaya untuk menguraikan perbedaan paling mendasar antara penutur Irak laki-laki dan perempuan betina dalam penggunaan strategi permintaan maaf. Korpus terdiri dari tanggapan wacana penyelesaian tes, yang meliputi tiga situasi yang berbeda. Informan yang menjadi subyek adalah 30, 15 laki-laki dan perempuan 15. Sampel secara acak dipilih dari tempat yang berbeda di Najaf yang dianggap sudah mewakili. Penelitian ini ditulis dalam bahasa Arab untuk memunculkan tanggapan tentang tuturan verbal Maaf untuk setiap situasi yang berbeda.

In the following paper I consider the various formats that politeness formula can exhibit in the ... more In the following paper I consider the various formats that politeness formula can exhibit in the following speech acts: requests, offers and thanks. I draw on material from English and Moroccan Arabic, making the point that these acts are rather complex, involving potential threat to the speaker and/or hearer's face. The analysis indicates that in both languages the speaker's primary goal is to minimise any threat to her/his face and to the face of the hearer; however, the method deployed to undertake this objective is different in the two languages. In English, the devices favoured are modals and questions whereas in Moroccan Arabic it is politeness markers and terms of address. Thus to mitigate the impact of the speech acts discussed in this paper, English seems to opt for syntactic downgraders, whereas MA inclines towards lexical downgraders.

Istilah Ghazwul Fikri hanya muncul dari orangorang yang ketakutan menghadapi realitas plural pemikiran manusia. Hal itu hanya muncul dari orang-orang yang berpikir sempit dalam menghadapi hidup ini.
