Book Challenges for 2014!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I can’t believe a brand new year is already here!  I think back to this time last year and I don’t know where the time has gone!!  I look ahead to the future and I see lots of hard work, many lessons to learn, God’s blessings to be realized and, as always, more books to read!!  So after looking through the list of great challenges on A Novel Challenge, I’ve chosen to participate in some reading challenges again!  This will serve as my master post that I’ll link to each event post.  I’ll also be making a separate page for each challenge to track my progress through the year.

I’m going to be realistic in my expectations and aim low.  That way, I’ll be more likely to reach my goals and not feel like a failure.  Not a practice I recommend in more important life matters, but no harm here!!  If I read more than I planned then great!!  But for now, my goals are modest.

2014 Audio Book Challenge

  • Lover- Listen to 25 Audio Books
  • Married-Listen to more than 25 Audio Books
  • You Define the Relationship- Create your own challenge (choose your own name and level starting as low or going as high as you’d like)

I’m going to try it again, only this time, I’m going to be a bit more realistic in my expectations. I’ll shoot for Going Steady – 12 audio books.

Back to the Classics 2014

backtotheclassics2014

Hosted at Books and Chocolate

This is one of several challenges that will go nicely with my Classics Club reads.  I want to finish many more titles this year I did last year.  Among other guidelines, this challenge has a list of required categories:

  1. A 20th Century Classic
  2. A 19th Century Classic
  3. A Classic by a Woman Author
  4. A Classic in Translation  If English is not your primary language, then books originally published in English are acceptable.  You could also read the book in its original language if you are willing and able to do so.
  5. A Classic About War  2014 will be the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I.  Any book relating to a war is fine — WWI, WWII, the French Revolution, the War of the Worlds — your choice.
  6. A Classic by an Author Who Is New To You This can be any author whose works you have not read before.  It doesn’t necessarily have to be an author you’ve never heard of.

Should be fun!

Little Women Check-In #2

Hey Dear Readers!!

LittleWomen ButtonI hope your Christmas season is going fabulously and you’re taking time to enjoy the wonder and happiness of the season!  And I really hope you’re enjoying Little Women so far! We’re about halfway done, whoot!!

I’m actually a bit behind :P. Just starting part two.  Right now, I’m off to get ready to snuggle under my covers and knock out a couple more chapters of the audiobook, which I’m seriously enjoying!  Listening to Barbra Caruso read my favorite book is like drinking hot cocoa from my favorite mug, for real!

Tell me how you’re coming along so far! Look forward to your thoughts :).

Have a great night!!

And happy reading ;)

Little Women Check-In #1

Hello Readers!

LittleWomen ButtonTime to check in and see how you all have gotten along this week!  I can’t tell you how many sweet memories this book evokes for me!  I’ve so enjoyed revisiting this part of my younger years!

As I am so strapped for time, I decided to just forget my hard copy altogether and listen to the audiobook.  It’s not what I wanted to do, but it’s better than falling completely behind!  And just an FYI for any of you whose schedules may also make it difficult to find time to curl up with this book, you can get the audiobook from Audible.com.  There are several different versions to choose from but I bought the Recorded Books production read by Barbra Caruso for about $6.00 (which is really good for an audiobook!). Caruso is one of my absolute favorite narrators and she doesn’t disappoint in this performance!  I also couldn’t help purchasing the dramatized version that I must have borrowed from the library at least 20 times when I was a child!  It’s abridged but it’s a delightful dramatization and I loved it :).  Okay, enough of the commercial, let’s talk about the book!  I’m currently on Chapter 14, Secrets.

Just as it often happens when rereading a childhood favorite, there’s so much more to appreciate as an adult.  I remember experiencing this book for the first time and thinking that Jo and Laurie were 15 years old and so grown up!  Then all of a sudden I was 20 years old and they seemed like such children.  Oh how perspective changes with age!  There are several things that I now cherish in this book that I didn’t so much when I was a young teenager.

First, I love Marmee.  She’s so sweet and full of grace and wisdom and my single self can’t help taking notes for the future.  Yet while we have this beautiful picture of motherly love, we find that she also struggles with personal weaknesses just as her daughters do but has learned to grapple with them with patience one day at a time.  So far, I think my favorite Marmee moment is from Chapter 9, Meg Goes to Vanity Fair. I quoted these very words in my post for last year’s August Meme, but if you’ll allow me, they’re worth re-posting:

“I want my daughters to be beautiful, accomplished, and good; to be admired, loved, and respected; to have a happy youth, to be well and wisely married, and to lead useful, pleasant lives, with as little care and sorrow to try them as God sees fit to send. To be loved and chosen by a good man is the best and sweetest thing which can happen to a woman, and I sincerely hope my girls may know this beautiful experience. It is natural to think of it, Meg, right to hope and wait for it, and wise to prepare for it, so that when the happy time comes, you may feel ready for the duties and worthy of the joy. My dear girls, I am ambitious for you, but not to have you make a dash in the world – marry rich men merely because they are rich, or have splendid houses, which are not homes because love is wanting. Money is a needful and precious thing,–and, when well used, a noble thing,–but I never want you to think it is the first or only prize to strive for. I’d rather see you poor men’s wives, if you were happy, beloved, contented, than queens on thrones, without self-respect and peace.”

“Poor girls don’t stand any chance, Belle says, unless they put themselves forward,” sighed Meg.

“Then we’ll be old maids,” said Jo stoutly.

“Right, Jo. Better be happy old maids than unhappy wives, or unmaidenly girls, running about to find husbands,” said Mrs. March decidedly. “Don’t be troubled, Meg, poverty seldom daunts a sincere lover. Some of the best and most honored women I know were poor girls, but so love-worthy that they were not allowed to be old maids. Leave these things to time; make this home happy, so that you may be fit for homes of your own, if they are offered you, and contented here if they are not. One thing remember, my girls: Mother is always ready to be your confidante, Father to be your friend; and both of us trust and hope that our daughters, whether married or single, will be the pride and comfort of our lives.”

Second, I truly love Jo and Laurie’s relationship.  They’re so funny and quirky and comfortable together and they’re perfectly suited chums.  Jo with her boyish awkwardness as she tries to figure out how to be a lady without losing herself in the process and Laurie’s lonely restlessness as he comes to terms with duty and responsibility.  All the while they play and swap adventures and share a carefree adolescence.  I think that, while Jo is completely oblivious to any romance in her life, by Chapter 14, Laurie’s affection for his best friend is starting to change into something more than just camaraderie.  If he hasn’t loved her from the first, I think he’s beginning to.  I’ll leave it there for now ;).

I hope you don’t mind that my comments will always lean more towards Jo because I always identified with her!  I’d love to know which sister you most relate to!

So far, my favorite chapters are as they have always been –

The Laurence Boy
Jo Meets Apollyon
Meg Goes to Vanity Fair
Camp Laurence
Secrets

What about you?

What are your favorite parts so far?  Is this a reread for you or your first time? I look forward to reading your thoughts.

And as always, happy reading!

Elyssa :)

Happy December, Dear Readers!

It has arrived!! Time to break out those copies of LM Alcott’s beloved classic, Little Women! (This post is kind of late in the day so perhaps you’ve already started!).

Hello Readers!!

TCOMC RA ButtonI hope all of you stateside had a great Thanksgiving and made wonderful memories with the people you love!  I have had a blast the past couple of days :).

Can you believe November is over?  And that means  our read-along has come to an end!  I know a couple of you have finished; I’m not sure about the rest.  I apologize for being absent the past couple of weeks, I was due for a third check-in and never came through :P.  But how did you make out?  Was it as good as you expected?  Did it exceed your expectations?  I want to hear what you thought!

Unfortunately, I was unable to finish in time (wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!).  My schedule was completely unrelenting and I had to pick and choose what took priority.  I do have the audiobook version, so I’ll try and finish up over the next few weeks and get my review out!  However, I’m so glad I was able to facilitate this event and I hope you all enjoyed yourselves!  I can’t wait to read your reviews!!!  I will be checking out the comments for the giveaway, so stay tuned!

The Count of Monte Cristo Check-In #2

Hello Readers!

How’s everyone doing so far?  I must confess I’m still dreadfully behind.  This past week began my first term of online classes at Thomas Edison State College and it has been quite a challenge to find extra time for anything else. But I’m trekking along and will make it through before the month is out –  I’m determined!  For now, I open this post for y’all to check-in, comment and share your thoughts!

TCOMC RA Button

I’m was so very glad to see the positive comments from last check-in.  This is a really good book, yeah?  It doesn’t lose speed and you never know what’s coming up next!  As much as I will always love the movie, I can’t help wishing they had stuck more with the original story.  BBC needs to get on that…

I hate to run off, but I have 2 assignments to finish for school!

Wishing everyone a fabulous week!

Happy reading!

The Count of Monte Cristo Check In #1

Hello Readers!

Time to check in and see how everyone’s doing so far in the book!

Just an FYI, I will be making some references to the movie during the read-along, but I’ll try not to give away anything important so I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it!!

TCOMC RA Button

Confession: I’m probably behind all of you :P. But that is a-okay. Y’all keep plugging along. And any spoilers in comments will not bother me so chat away, if you’d like.  However, a pace of 2.5 chapters per day brings us to chapter 42 so, please no comments about anything beyond that. Thanks :)

Let me just say that it took me a minute to shift gears and get used to how different it is from the movie!! Book shock, much?  I don’t know, maybe that’s just me.  But I am really enjoying it despite the longwinded bits (again, maybe that’s just me!).

I like the fact that you get the political, historical backdrop in the book, although, I must confess, I sort of yawned my way through it.  I also loved reading the father-son relationship between Abbe Faria & Dantes. That was really touching.

But probably the one thing that THREW ME OFF was Fernand!  If you’ve seen the movie, you know what I mean.  Oh my goodness, I was not expecting him to hate Edmond from the beginning.  Well then, this story is going in a completely different direction than I anticipated!  I’m excited to see what happens!

Can’t wait to see how ya’ll are doing so far!

Happy, happy reading :)

The Pilgrim’s Progress Final Check-In

Hello Readers!

Today is the final day of our journey through Pilgrim’s Progress!! YAY!!!  I will be perfectly honest with you, I didn’t think I was going to make it through those last two sections of this book!  But I did and I’m soooo glad to be done with hosting my first reading event, you have no idea! :D

As I mentioned in the last check-in, I was kind of weary and wondering why Bunyan chose to continue the book with Christiana’s pilgrimage after all.  After wading through the last 100 pages, my sentiments stayed about the same.  Much of the conversation had to do with recalling what happened to Christian on his journey and revisiting the places he had been.  To be sure, Christiana, Mercy and the boys met some interesting characters (I really liked Great-heart, Mr. Steadfast, and Mr. Valiant-for-Truth).  I suppose I caught a case of you-could-have-said-that-in-half-those-words-why-drag-it-out-itis.  When I take the time to read Part 2 again, sometime in the future, I’m sure I’ll be able to grasp the depth that Bunyan was trying to convey but I was too anxious to be done with the book to get much out of it this time around.  So you can imagine my delight when letters were being delivered from the Celestial City, telling Pilgrims that their journeys were over and the King was inviting them to their eternal reward.  Whoot!  You made it!  Finally!

I did love Mr. Steadfast’s final words as he’s leaving for the Kingdom:

I see myself now at the end of my Journey; my toilsome days are ended. I am going now to see that Head that was crowned with thorns, and that Face that was spit upon for me.

I have formerly lived by hear-say and Faith; but now I go where I shall live by Sight, and shall be with him in whose company I delight myself.

I have loved to hear my Lord spoken of; and where-ever I have seen the print of his shoe in the earth, there I have coveted to set my foot too.

His Name has been to me as a civet box; yea, sweeter than all perfumes. His Voice to me has been most sweet; and his Countenance I have more desired than they that have most desired the light of the Sun. His Word I did use to gather for my food, and for antidotes against my faintings. He has held me, and I have kept me from mine iniquities; yea, my steps hath he strengthened in his Way.

Beeeeeautiful!!!

What about you, my dear readers?  How have you made out?  Were you able to finish the book?  Have you already written your reviews?  What are your thoughts about Part 2?  Leave your comments below!

I know my notes were rather anti-climactic, but I can’t help but be honest :P.

I’ll be posting my overall book review over the weekend. Stay tuned!

Have a great weekend, y’all!

The Pilgrim’s Progress Check-In #4

Large ButtonHello Readers!

I know I’m still super behind but I am catching up!  Two more check-in posts after this one and we shall be finished!  I don’t know about you but as much as I’ve enjoyed this book, I am so ready to be with this book!

This first installment of Christiana’s journey had me thinking that I wasn’t going to like the second part as much as the first.  I couldn’t help wondering why Bunyan even bothered writing a second part.  Christian made to the Glorious City, the end right?  I know that Christian was heartbroken that his wife and children did not accompany him, but really, Bunyan covered so much theology and made so many parallels to real people and situations to finish the story comfortably.  But then I got to the part when the Interpreter asks Christiana why she decided to become a Pilgrim.

“Christiana answered, First, the loss of my Husband came into my mind, at which I was heartily grieved; but all that was natural affection. Then, after that came the troubles and Pilgrimage of my Husband into my mind, and also how like a churl I had carried it to him as to that. So Guilt took hold of my mind, and would have drawn me into the pond; but that opportunely I had a dream of the well-being of my Husband, and a Letter sent me by the King of that country where my Husband dwells to come to him.  The dream and the Letter together so wrought upon my mind, that they forced me to this Way.”

Okay, Bunyan, I get it.  There’s so much more to explore.  Alright, let’s go.  So I continued.

Then comes Great-Heart and the discussion between him and our two lady Pilgrims about Christ’s Righteousness and the gift He imparts to people.  Mind blown.  I have never heard the Righteousness of Christ explained that way.  It was quite an interesting breakdown.  I’m going to have to go over that and see what I think about it…

Did anyone else find it interesting how Mercy breaks into song?  This, of course, isn’t the first time there is singing or verse but it amused me how there’s solemn conversation about how the three men, Simple, Sloth, and Presumption are hanging and Mercy ‘turned it into a Song’ and proceeds to sing about how their hanging shall be a sign to others.  It reminded me of the singing Clown in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.  I’m not exactly sure why, but that’s what came to mind.

That is it for now my friends.  I’m on a weekend trip with my brother and cousins and I’m tired and in a bit of a silly mood right now.  If it’s coming through my notes, I do apologize but I needed to get this finished so I can get on with the next section!  Two more to goooooooo!! I may actually make it :)).

How are you all making out?  Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Stay blessed and happy reading :).
