been used by the Peruvian folk medicine for many years in order
to treate several illnesses, from intlammations to cáncer. With
the rediscovery of the medicinal plants in the last few years, it
is necessary to evalúate their biochemical properties on animáis
with a scientifical viewpoint, to optimize treatments. The embryo
stages are an excellent laboratory samples, due to their high
sensitivity to physical, chemical and biological agents.
Previously synchronized female Swiss albine mice that
presented vaginal plug were treated with different concentrations
(0.125, 0.250, 0.375, 0.500mg/ml)ofcommercial(/.íome«íosa
for 72 hours post copula. When perfusioned embryos were
obtained, a high number of abnormal ones were seen, suggesting
an embryotoxic effect.
It is discussed the synergid action of the different components
of the "cat's claw" that could cause the teratogenical results.

To evaluate the effect of ZnO, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles on cell viability and expression of th... more To evaluate the effect of ZnO, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles on cell viability and expression of the interleukin 7, interleukin 3, and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) genes in Mus musculus. Red bone marrow was extracted from five Balb/c mice for the analysis of cell viability using the MTT test. The mice were divided into two groups of five each: one group was inoculated intraperitoneally with 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, and 10 mg/kg of ZnO and SiO2 nanoparticles, respectively, and the other group was inoculated with 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0, and 25 mg/kg of TiO2 nanoparticles, respectively. Thirty hours later, RNA was extracted from the red bone marrow of the mice in both groups for gene expression analysis using quantitative PCR and RT-PCR. ZnO and SiO2 nanoparticles reduced cell viability in a dose-dependent manner by 37% and 26%, respectively, starting at a dose of 1 mg/kg. Briarosaccus callosus (Boschma, 1930) a rhizocephala cirripedia (Peltogastridae) causes castratio... more Briarosaccus callosus (Boschma, 1930) a rhizocephala cirripedia (Peltogastridae) causes castration and reduces the speed of growth of Paralomis longipes Faxon, 1893, "king crab", a crustacean with a great economic potential in Peru. The ovigerous sac called the "externa" was processed by means of histological techniques in order to characterize this structure. We settled down that a fibrilar cuticle was constituted with an external strongly eosinophilic zone (107.8 µm) and an internal one less eosinophilic (60.5 µm), with basophilic projections. The pedicle conformation in function to the relation with the host and the implicances with the reproductive cycle of the centolla is discussed.

Se colectó muestras de sangre periférica de 10 especímenes de ambos sexos y de diversas edades, clínicamente sanos y mantenidos en cautiverio en el Parque Zoológico Huachipa. Se obtuvo tres frotices de sangre por animal y fueron teñidos con May-Grunwald-Giemsa 2%. Se identificó la presencia de hemoparásitos intraeritrocitarios del género Hepatozoon, determinándose por sus aspectos morfológicos que los gamontes corresponden a H. caimani.

The objective of the current research was to assess exposure of lambda-cyhalothrin on release of ootheca, and sperm viability and motility of Blatella germanica (Linnaeus). No premature release of female oothecas were evident, but mortality in males (LT = 1h 6 min) was higher than in females (LT = 1h 54 50 50-1 min). Lambda-cyhalothrin produced effects on inhibition of sperm viability (EC = 1130 mg•L) 50-1 and sperm motility (EC = 660, 6 mg•L) of B. germanica.

Para establecer rangos hematológicos de referencia, se tomaron muestras de sangre de 13 especímenes (7 machos, 6 hembras) criados en cautividad en el Zoológico del Patronato del Parque de Las Leyendas de Lima, Perú. El promedio de eritrocitos y leucocitos fue 2608 x 10 3 /ml y de 10.11 x 10 3 /ml, respectivamente; 50.15% de hematocrito y 200 fl de volumen corpuscular medio; asimismo, en el recuento diferencial leucocitario se observó 64.7 y 25.3% de heterófilos y leucocitos, respectivamente. El diámetro mayor y menor de los eritrocitos fue de 11.3 y 7.0 µm, respectivamente. Estos resultados podrían emplearse como valores locales de referencia para esta especie.

Objetivo: Estudiar los efectos de la exposición paterna a Diazinon sobre la progenie. Se trataron (intraperitonealmente, durante 5 días) 3 grupos de ratones machos Swiss adultos (n=10, por grupo). Los grupos 1 y 2 recibieron dosis de 10,5 y 21 mg Diazinon/kg de peso corporal, respectivamente; el grupo control, sólo vehículo. Cada macho fue apareado semanalmente con una hembra durante 4 semanas. Los embriones se recuperaron 96 horas post-cópula y se evaluó su morfología, estadio de desarrollo, número celular e índice mitótico. Análisis estadístico: ANOVA (significancia: p<0.05). La morfología y el desarrollo óptimos decayeron en el grupo 2 en un 75 y 51%, respectivamente, frente al grupo control (grupo 2: 23% y 48%; grupo control: 98% y 98%; p<0.05). El número de células por embrión en los grupos 1 (58 ± 6,2) y 2 (55 ± 2,8, p<0.05) fue inferior al del control (65 ± 1,9). El mayor efecto embriotóxico se vio en la cuarta semana post-tratamiento paterno. Conclusiones: Diazinon causa daños genotóxicos heredables en la línea germinal masculina, principalmente en estadios premeióticos de la espermatogénesis.

Este proceso involucra las operaciones básicas de tratamiento primario como son: selección, clasificación, blanqueado, pulpeado, refinado de la pulpa, y pasteurización de la pulpa de camu camu. Se ha logrado formular la bebida, conservando todas sus propiedades nutricionales. Los análisis de la bebida reportan 1334 mg de ácido ascórbico /100 ml y niveles de calcio 197,90 ppm: 47,27 ppm de magnesio; 1,24 ppm de Zn y de energía 66,38 calorías /100 ml.

The aim of current research was to determine embryotoxic lethal acute toxicity of Hg2+, in form of chloride of mercury (HgCl2) on Helisoma trivolvis (Say, 1817) at 24 h exposure. Concentrations assayed were 514, 51.4, 5.14 and 0.51 ug Hg+2 L-1, since salt on base of HgCl2 using dechlorined water as diluents. Snail embryos were considered dead when none rotation movement during since 30 seconds. Percentage of mortality of embryonic stages of H. trivolvis increased with each of concentrations crescents of Hg2+ at 24 h exposure. At a concentration of 514.4 ug Hg2+ L-1 was observed significantly differences in relation to control. Moreover, concentration of 514.4 ug Hg2+ L-1 showed differences with relation to other three treatments. LC50 was 2.49 ug Hg2+ L-1. Embryos of H. trivolvis were higher sensible to Hg2+ in comparison to other freshwater snail species was concluded.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental impact of endoparasitic infection with flukes (trematodes) and habitat stability on the proportion of male M. tuberculata, performing six monthly sampling from March to August 1999 in Rio Lurin, Lima, Peru. We collected specimens of M. tuberculata in branches of Lurin River, Cieneguilla district 25 km east of Lima, Peru. In the laboratory, individuals were measured and dissected. Cyclophosphamide (CP) is an alkylating antineoplastic and immunosuppressive agent that has been a... more Cyclophosphamide (CP) is an alkylating antineoplastic and immunosuppressive agent that has been associated with fetal malformations and infertility. The purpose of this study was to determine if oral administration of aqueous extract of Uncaria tomentosa (UT) in mice restored the negative effect of CP on sperm quality. The body, testicular and epididimary weight showed no significant difference; the sperm concentration decreased in all the treated groups. The results confirm that the most sensitive sperm stage to the effect of the CP is the spermatid. We suggest a protective effect of UT against CP induced spermatogenic line toxicity in mice.
