The unsettled question of irregularities that have consistently dominated elections in Nigeria is interrogated in this study. The study situates the problem within the context of winner-takes-all majoritarian electoral system (MES) and queries the implementation of the MES-driven model in an environment of do-or-die politics, weak electoral institution, and 'glorification' of clandestine electoral strategies. It further argues that the model reinforces politicians’ use of subtle strategies to increase their odds of victory and pay less or not attention to their detrimental consequences on democratic development. Economic dynamics in Nigeria and the introduction of the neoliberal state and economic policies which led to the breakdown of the family structure undermine the implementation of child welfare policies in Nigeria. This study argues that the introduction of the neoliberal state, that is a minimalist state and its economic policies such as privatization, removal of state subsidies and deregulation undermine the implementation of existing child welfare policies in Nigeria. These policies are market and profit driven perspective which has a significant impact on the prospects of sustainable development and welfare of children. Thus, this study inserted in the debate on inconclusive elections and democratic consolidation by investigating the limiting effects of inconclusive gubernatorial elections (IGEs) in Nigeria. Rural-urban appraisal of the prevalence and factors of depression status in South Africa

Abstract Despite the increasing burden of depression problems in South Africa, there remains a de... more Abstract Despite the increasing burden of depression problems in South Africa, there remains a dearth of nationally representative rural-urban and spatial studies of the prevalence and factors of depression among the population. The study, therefore, examines the spatial and rural-urban prevalence and factors of depression status in South Africa. Data was from the 2017 National Income Dynamics (NIDS) survey, which was conducted in 9 provinces and 52 districts of South Africa. A composite index of depression status was generated from questions of how respondents felt in the week preceding the survey. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, hotspot analysis, spatial autocorrelation, geographically weighted regression, and binary logistic regression. The results showed 82.16% and 81.34% prevalence of low depression status in urban and rural areas respectively. In addition, there existed spatial variations in the prevalence of low depression status across the 9 provinces and 52 districts with regard to rural/urban place of residence. The factors which significantly increased the odds of low depression status in both rural and urban areas, were respondents with secondary and tertiary education, respondents with incomes of more than R10,000, and the non-Blacks. Conversely, being separated/widowed/divorced, and respondents aged 65+ years significantly decreased the odds of low depression status in both rural and urban areas. This study recommends more investments in education and creation of more and better employment opportunities in other to ensure increased prevalence of low depression status in the country.

It posits that the dominance of sectional interests in the Nigerian politics heightens executive instability and the interpretations of the provisions of the constitution tend to increase political instability, tension and conflict. The pervasive political instability within the executive arm arising from the long absence of President Yar’Adua from office became a major political issue in Nigeria from November 2009 to March 2010. For nearly five months there was absence of executive President in Nigeria, yet his kitchen cabinet saw nothing wrong in this situation. The book tries to show that the process of globalization via the neoliberal economic policies have not provided the panacea for economic growth and development or poverty reduction. Rather, the process has exacerbated poverty and taken it to a new level.

Nigeria loses an estimated $6 billion annually to oil theft. In spite of its organised nature and growing sophistication, very little scholarly inquiry has been done on this evolving monumental criminality. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to examine the dynamics of oil theft in Nigeria, focusing on the intricate nexus, modus operandi , and actors involved in three nefarious activities encapsulated in ‘oil theft’, namely; oil pipeline vandalization, artisanal oil refining and illegal oil bunkering. The general believe with the introduction of neoliberal economic policies as driven by the process of globalization are that prosperity is assured under the auspices of the process. However, extant experiences and data in the book have shown differently. The book tries to show that the process of globalization via the neoliberal economic policies have not provided the panacea for economic growth and development or poverty reduction. Rather, the process has exacerbated poverty and taken it to a new level.

Nigeria loses an estimated $6 billion annually to oil theft. In spite of its organised nature and growing sophistication, very little scholarly inquiry has been done on this evolving monumental criminality. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to examine the dynamics of oil theft in Nigeria, focusing on the intricate nexus, modus operandi , and actors involved in three nefarious activities encapsulated in ‘oil theft’, namely; oil pipeline vandalization, artisanal oil refining and illegal oil bunkering.
