The haploid technique has been used in plant breeding for the improvements of plants and to develop new varieties in relatively a short time. Hence, we have optimized several factors such as plant growth regulators (PGR), sucrose concentration, cold treatment, type of media and culture conditions for callus induction from the anther and ovary of okra (557 F1 hybrid). According to the EU definition, a &quot; nanomaterial &quot; is composed of particles whose size is in the range 1-100 nm for at least 50% of total. This size range is imposed by several organizations, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) [1]. Nanostructures are the smallest solid possible to be made and are intermediate between isolated atoms or molecules and macroscopic matter. At the 1-100 nm size scale the matter offers physical and chemical properties different from the macroscopic level. Therefore, nanotechnology works with materials in nanometric scale to confer them new properties. The techniques used to reduce particle size so as to obtain nanostructures are, among others, low flow injection, precipitation by antisolvents, and evaporation. Hence, nanotechnology is a set of technologies that allows the manipulation, study or exploitation of very small structures and systems. The rapid development of nanotechnology is encouraged by an evolving scenario for unearthing, classifying, and releasing nanoscale materials and knowledge in a multidisciplinary frame. Nanoscale devices have been applied to biotechnology, information technologies, and cognitive sciences. In addition, nanotechnology displays a great potential in the agricultural and food industry, where it can play a key role in the controlled release of herbicides and fertilizers, as well as in food processing and packaging, and for raising the overall level of food safety. Nanotechnology allows innovating the formulation of agrochemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, veterinary medicines), and allow developing nanomaterials able to enhance pest management and crop protection due to improved effectiveness, better bio accessibility of active ingredients, and controlled release [2]. Antioxidant, Antibacterial, and Anti-diabetic Activity of Green Synthesized Copper Nanoparticles of Cocculus hirsutus (Menispermaceae)

The emergence of new technologies has led to the discovery of the biological properties of nanopa... more The emergence of new technologies has led to the discovery of the biological properties of nanoparticles through green approach. In the present investigation, we report the potential antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic properties of copper nanoparticle (CuNPs) synthesized by reducing 3 mM copper acetate solution with aqueous leaf extract of Cocculus hirsutus. A colour change from deep brown to dark greenish brown indicated the formation of copper nanoparticles. The so-formed CuNPs were characterized by employing UV spectroscopy, FTIR, SEM, and EDX analyses which described sheet-like structure morphology having typical size of 63.46 nm. Later, the synthesized CuNPs efficiency was evaluated against bacterial pathogens, and was found highly toxic to B. subtilis and S. aureus strains. The synthesized CuNPs were examined through H2O2 and PMA assays which demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity. Besides, the resulted CuNPs revealed the higher anti-diabetic efficacy in both the α\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\alpha$$\end{document}-amylase and α\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\alpha$$\end{document} -glucosidase inhibition assays (64.5% ± 0.11 and 68.5% ± 0.11, respectively). Finally, our findings report that C. hirsutus can be exploited as a source for green synthesis of CuNPs, having potent in vitro antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-diabetic properties.

In the present study effort was aimed to evaluate phytochemical components and antimicrobial acti... more In the present study effort was aimed to evaluate phytochemical components and antimicrobial activity of Artocarpus hirsutus edible fruit part with different organic solvent extracts by Soxhlet extraction method with analytical grade solvents viz., methanol and petroleum ether. This study reports the potent phytochemical components which were observed qualitatively. The in vitro antimicrobial activity was performed by agar well diffusion method against the clinically important bacterial strains viz., Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM 2492), Bacillus subtillis (NCIM 2439) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (NCIM 2719) with the concentration of different extracts ranged from 25 to 75µL. It has shown the concentration dependent antimicrobial activity. This study reveals the presence of phytochemical components like alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids. The study shows the effective antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterial strains with maximum zone of inhibition compared with standard drug tetracycline.

These seafood industry effluents contain large quantities of lipids, amino acids, proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, minerals, and carotenoids mixed with the garbage. This debris not only causes a huge wastage of various nutrients but also roots in severe environmental contamination. Hence, the problem of such seafood industry run-offs needs to be immediately managed with a commercial outlook. To establish and increase the production of honey one must know the plants that take part in the production of honey. In this study pollen analysis of forest honey samples from northern part of Malaysia was carried out to determine the botanical sources playing role in the production of honey in that region. The pollen samples were acetolyzed and identified microscopically. Out of the three samples studied Baling sample was unifloral having Mimosa scabrella as predominant pollen while Jeli and Gerik samples are multifloral containing Tipo myrcia and Elais guineensis as major secondary pollen. Fabaceae family represented four pollen types and accounted 80% of pollen in Baling sample and 34 % in Gerik sample while completely absent in Jeli sample. Research Article Screening of Ethanol-Tolerant Fusants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia stipitis from Protoplast Fusion

Bioethanol is gaining increasing attention as a clean and renewable fuel because of its major env... more Bioethanol is gaining increasing attention as a clean and renewable fuel because of its major environmental benefits. Efficient bioethanol fermentation requires the selection of superior strains that are capable of ethanol stress tolerance. Yeast can produce ethanol, thereby reflecting its intrinsic ability to tolerate ethanol. This study focuses on ethanol tolerance enhancement of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for ethanol production improvement through protoplast fusion. S. cerevisiae and P. stipitis fusants (ATCC 58785), which can ferment xylose, were isolated. The ability of these isolates tolerate ethanol was investigated by allowing the strains to grow in different ethanol concentrations. Results showed the ability of the fusantsto have an average tolerance to ethanol when compared with the parent strains and fermented glucose in the presence of 6% ethanol. By contrast, the parent strains S. cerevisiae and P. stipitis showed ethanol tolerances of 8 and 4%, respectively. Fusant formation was confirmed by the increased DNA content. This outcome suggests that multiple fusions had occurred and the genetic stability of fusants indicates that F24 and F18 are genetically stable and suitable for industrial production.

Raw kenaf and oil palm empty fruit bunch were treated through chemical treatment and high intensity ultrasonication process to produce cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). One control brick without CNF and ten CNF composite bricks were fabricated. The composite bricks used different amount of CNF which were 40 - 200 ml mixed with filtered sand, portland cement and pebbles. Physical and mechanical characterization was done by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and universal testing machine (UTM) on CNF and composite bricks. FESEM showed the fibril diameter were ranges from 30 - 80 nm for kenaf and 20 - 60 nm for oil palm. The compression tests showed that control brick, 40 ml kenaf CNF composite brick and 40 ml oil palm CNF composite brick were cracked at force 39.01 kN, 50.46 kN and 42.16 kN respectively. Spring onion (Allium fistulosum L.) belongs to subgenus Cepa, genus Allium and family Liliaceae a... more Spring onion (Allium fistulosum L.) belongs to subgenus Cepa, genus Allium and family Liliaceae and popularly known as scallion, Welsh onion and Japanese bunching onion. Cultivation of spring onion dates back to 200 BC in China and reached Japan before 500 AD which later spread to Southeast Asia. Spring onion is grown worldwide, however the main area of cultivation remains in East Asia from Siberia to tropical Asia including China, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. The plant is a perennial herb, does not produce bulbs, and possesses hollow leaves and has traditionally been used in Chinese folk medicine to treat common cold, influenza, abdominal pain, headache and cardiovascular disease as well as having antifungal and antibacterial effects. Spring onion is known for its flavor and aroma and is a rich source of vitamin C, A and B6, thiamine, folate, rhamnose, galactose, glucose, arabinose and xylose. Production of F1 hybrids is considered as one of the main goals in crop breeding. The length of time taken is the main restriction in breeding programs as eight or more generations of inbreeding are needed to establish homozygous lines that can be applied in hybrid production. This process can be enhanced by using doubled haploid (DH) lines as components of hybrid cultivars. In this chapter, we give an overview of the origin, botanical classification, distribution, reported health benefits, genetic resource and conservation, crop cultivation practices and recent advances on biotechnology, and molecular biology and their application for crop improvement in connection with traditional breeding methods of spring onion. In this aspect, mutational breeding and somatic hybridization are the potential approaches for the development of new high-yielding and disease-resistant cultivars.

However, these techniques have certain limitation in terms of extraction time, energy, and solvent requirements.
