Learning in a higher education institution that applies an open and distance learning system requ... more Learning in a higher education institution that applies an open and distance learning system requires the students to study as independent learners. This research is a survey research with the purpose of exploring the characteristics, habits and learning motivation of high-achiever students or those who obtained a high level of Grade Point Average (GPA). The sample used in this study was Universitas Terbuka (UT) students of Non Elementary Education Programs who had completed at least four semesters and had obtained a GPA of 2.50 or higher. This study discovered that the high-achiever students were younger students of the average age of 29 years. Most of these higher achiever students were highly motivated to study and were studying at UT to support their career development. They usually studied 3-4 hours/for each course each day. Interviews showed that students generally did the self-assessment tests and they regularly attended the tutorials. The time of study (p=.001) and methods of study (p=.01) recorded in this study have the potential to contribute to the students' GPA.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of scaffolding in a form of inquiry question... more The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of scaffolding in a form of inquiry questions on students' critical thinking and satisfaction in online argumentation. Twenty-two graduate students in a distance learning course were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Each student in the experimental group participated in an online discussion activity a) with guided inquiry questions or b) without these questions. Results indicated that although providing guided inquiry questions had a positive effect on students' critical thinking, it did not have an effect on students' satisfaction. These findings and previous research in this area imply that scaffolding such as guided inquiry questions can be used to promote students' critical thinking in online learning environments and increase students' positive attitudes toward online learning.

Tujuan tracer study Program Studi (PS) Agribisnis adalah untuk mendeskripsikan: (1) profil lulusan, (2) pengalaman belajar lulusan, (3) kualitas kinerja, kompetensi dan daya saing lulusan, (4) kepuasan lulusan terhadap sistem belajar di Universitas Terbuka (UT), (5) keinginan lulusan untuk studi lanjut, (6) penilaian stakeholders terhadap lulusan, dan (7) partisipasi lulusan dalam Ikatan Alumni (IKA) UT. Penelitian tracer study dilakukan dengan metode survey terhadap 124 responden, melalui kuesioner dan wawancara. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif, dan disajikan dalam bentuk tabulasi frekuensi dan persentase. An organization needs to provide the best services to its customer, especially when the same serv... more An organization needs to provide the best services to its customer, especially when the same services are also given by others. As a consequence, the provision of services should be evaluated regularly in order to improve the services. This article discusses the findings of Importance-Satisfaction survey on student services of Universitas Terbuka (UT) in 2014. Data was gathered from 22 Regional Offices of UT. The number of respondents was 1099 students. The results showed that there were no significant differences found between the means of Importance and Satisfaction levels of the services provided. The results of a quadrant analysis indicate that there were only five items (out of 47 items) in Quadrant-4 (important but not satisfactory) where the percentage of the gap analysis was almost 10%. The gaps between the levels of Importance and Satisfaction for the rest of the items (42 items) in Q-4 were much lower than 9%.

Those who were satisfied and proud of their alma mater can become marketing agents for their colleges. The alumni satisfaction with the student support services available for them during their study can be obtained by administering an exit survey. Exit surveys at the same time can also capture information about support services that have not been in accordance with the need for the students. By undertaking the exit survey, the management can also elicit information on services that haven’t meet the needs of the students. Continuous improvement of services is expected to increase the persistence rate of the students. This article aims to analyze the results of the exit surveys conducted at the university. Alumni yang merasa puas dan bangga terhadap almamaternya dapat menjadi agen pemasaran bagi perguruan tingginya. Kepuasan alumni terhadap layanan bantuan belajar yang disediakan bagi mereka selama studi dapat dijaring dengan metode exit survey. Exit survey sekaligus juga dapat menjaring informasi mengenai layanan bantuan belajar yang belum sesuai dengan kebutuhan selama menjadi mahasiswa. Perbaikan layanan kepada mahasiswa dapat meningkatkan tingkat kebertahanan mahasiswa pada perguruan tingginya. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hasil exit survey di Universitas Terbuka (UT). Hasil analisis dapat dijadikan bahan pertimbangan untuk peningkatan layanan bantuan belajar kepada mahasiswa. This article discusses selfdirected learning readiness of facetoface and openanddistance le... more This article discusses selfdirected learning readiness of facetoface and openanddistance learning (ODL) students. Serving as facetoface samples were third grade senior high school students and ODL�s samples were Universitas Terbuka (UT) students. Samples of faceto face students (as UT prospective students) were students from two high schools in Bogor and one in Depok. Selfdirected learning readiness was measured with the Indonesian Version of SelfDirected Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) translated by Darmayanti (1993).The results showed that prospective students had significantly lower readiness for selfdirected learning than UT students. SDLRS scores indicated that both prospective and UT students had average readiness for selfdirected learning. It meant that students were likely to be successful in independent learning situations. However they were not completely comfortable being responsible for the entire process of identifying their learning needs and planning, imnplementing, and evaluating their learning. Thus, UT has to provide student support for improving students skills in selfdirected learning. Pendidikan jarak jauh (PJJ) seringkali dikaitkan dengan istilah belajar mandiri. Perkembangan konsep belajar mandiri di bidang PJJ merupakan konsekuensi salah satu karakteristik PJJ yang menuntut kemampuan belajar mandiri yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan bentuk pendidikan tatap muka. Hal ini mengingat lebih terbatasnya interaksi antara mahasiswa dengan instruktur dan dengan sesama mahasiswa. Paul (1990), seorang ahli PJJ, bahkan mengemukakan bahwa kesuksesan institusi PJJ tergantung pada kemampuan mahasiswanya untuk belajar mandiri. Beberapa peneliti juga mengemukakan bahwa siswa yang mempunyai kemandirian belajarlah yang akan berhasil menempuh pendidikan dalam sistem PJJ (Long, 1991; Moore, 1983; Paul, 1990). Oleh karena itu, calon mahasiswa dalam sistem PJJ seharusnya sudah mempunyai kesiapan yang memadai untuk belajar mandiri. Menurut Sugilar (1999), kesiapan belajar mandiri berkaitan dengan kesiapan individu untuk melaksanakan kegiatan belajar atas inisiatif sendiri, dengan atau tanpa dukungan pihak lain. Pendapat ini senada dengan definisi Hiemstra (1994) yang mengemukakan bahwa seseorang yang mampu belajar secara mandiri artinya mampu merencanakan belajarnya sendiri, melaksanakan proses belajar, dan mengevaluasi belajarnya sendiri. Secara lebih spesifik, Knowles (1975) mendefinisikan belajar mandiri sebagai suatu proses di mana seseorang mempunyai inisiatif (baik dengan atau tanpa bantuan orang lain) dalam mendiagnosis kebutuhankebutuhan belajar mereka, merumuskan tujuantujuan belajar, mengidentifikasi sumbersumber belajar, memilih dan melaksanakan strategi belajar yang sesuai, serta mengevaluasi hasil belajar mereka sendiri. Siswa yang memiliki kemandirian yang tinggi dalam belajar digambarkan sebagai orang yang mampu mengontrol proses belajar, mempergunakan bermacammacam sumber belajar, mempunyai motivasi internal, dan memiliki kemampuan mengatur waktu (Guglielmino & Guglielmino, 1991) serta memiliki konsep diri yang positif dibandingkan dengan mereka yang kemandirian belajarnya rendah (Sabbaghian, 1980). Singkatnya, pelajar yang mampu belajar mandiri diartikan sebagai individu yang mempunyai tanggung jawab terhadap proses belajarnya sendiri (Hiemstra, 1994).
