"Augustine and Macrobe: Two Opposite Ways of Perceving the Past and the Future ". This ... more "Augustine and Macrobe: Two Opposite Ways of Perceving the Past and the Future ". This paper intends to shed light on the connection between two cultivated and powerful men who, each in his own field of action and expression, enjoyed great favour in their days and were later included among the “ Founders of the Middle Ages” by Edward K. Rand. More particularly, this study explores traces of anti-Augustinian polemics concealed between the lines of Macrobius’s work. Focusing on a small range of excerpts from the Saturnalium Libri and De ciuitate Dei, as well as on the contemporary literary production by Prudentius, Hieronymus, Orosius, the aim of this essay is to better understand how “ pagans” and Christians dealt with the most terrible military and political crisis ever faced by the Roman Empire.Questo contributo intende illuminare alcuni aspetti dei rapporti fra due uomini di cultura e di potere, che nei rispettivi campi di azione e di espressione godettero di ampio credito alla loro epoca, e più tardi meritarono entrambi di essere annoverati da Edward K. Rand tra i “ Founders of the Middle Ages” ; in particolare, saranno esplorate alcune tracce di polemica antiagostiniana nascoste fra le righe del dialogo di Macrobio. Sarà discusso un piccolo dossier di testi – estratti dai Saturnalium libri come pure dal De ciuitate dei, oltreché dalla coeva produzione letteraria di Prudenzio, Gerolamo, Orosio – utili a farci meglio comprendere i sentimenti dei “ pagani” e dei Cristiani di fronte alla più grave crisi militare e politica che avesse mai investito l’Impero romano.Mastandrea Paolo.
