It is a fundamental topic on which many have reflected and much has been written. However, because of its very centrality, I believe that it can never receive enough attention. In fact, the function performed by the device of ‘tradition’ has been and is still indispensable for the great majority of the South Asian forms and systems of knowledge and meaning, since it is their main foundation of guarantee and validation. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the details and the dynamics of this function in order to effectively grasp the logic of those forms and systems of knowledge.

In questo volume esso viene affrontato a partire dai materiali provenienti dall'ambito sudasiatico antico, qui sottoposti ad articolata disamina. Tali materiali, infatti, sono stati rivisitati secondo una particolare chiave di lettura, grazie alla quale si e giunti alla costituzione di un nuovo scenario rispetto alle maniere solite di intendere l'istituto della tradizione. Un isti-tuto importante, qui letto attraverso tre principali angolature: quella del tradens (colui che trasmette), del traditum (cio che e trasmesso) e del recipiens (il destinatario della trasmissione). Sono questi i tre punti cardine dell'intero lavoro, cosi come del modello interpretativo che esso propone.

Anche in Sud Asia, sotto le vesti del termine dharma, si e consumata la medesima contesa. Anche li regola ed eccezione, universale e particolare, hanno di continuo mostrato i caratteri ambigui del loro rapporto. Anche in Sud Asia, di fatto, l’intento principale sotteso a ogni discorso normativo e stato quello di estendere un dato insieme di prassi e consuetudini, ritenute rette, a una data collettivita, col fine di farle recepire e accogliere in seno alle proprie abitudini e ai propri costumi. Ma per ottenere questi risultati, il discorso normativo deve necessariamente fare i conti con tutta una serie di ragioni pratiche e consuetudini d’uso, misurandosi con i differenti piani della contingenza. Cio rende ragione del fatto che in Sud Asia, dai primi secoli a.C. in poi, i ‘redattori del discorso sulla norma’ (dharmaśātrakāra), nel tentativo di giustificare il proprio operato, abbiano messo in evidenza quella che e stata —e rimane ancora oggi— forse la piu inquietante fra le problematiche normative: l’ansia di legittimazione insita in ogni manovra intellettuale che si pone come traguardo quello di fondare la ‘verita’ epistemica di una regola, di una norma, di una convenzione pratica.
