Using 24,034 firm-year observations from 16 European countries over the period 1998 -2014, we find that the higher the level of secrecy in a country the lower the level of earnings quality of firms, as measured by signed abnormal accruals. We find that mandatory adoption of IFRS improves earnings quality in all countries. However, our study indicates that the impact of mandatory adoption of IFRS on earnings quality is stronger the higher the level of secrecy in a country. Our evidence thus helps to explain the different impacts of IFRS adoption on earnings quality across different jurisdictions.

Earnings quality is proxied by signed abnormal accruals and earnings conservatism. Using 19,324 firm year observations from 14 countries over the period 1998-2011 and controlling for country level differences in investor protection, we find that firms in a high-secrecy country tend to report higher abnormal accruals and earnings conservatism, which results in lower earnings quality. On the other hand, we find that mandatory IFRS adoption improves earnings quality by decreasing abnormal accruals and earnings conservatism. Our study provides evidence of the interaction between national culture, as indicated by secrecy, and IFRS adoption and helps to explain differences in earnings quality across different jurisdictions following IFRS adoption.

Tunnelling is a governance issue between controlling shareholders and minority shareholders in both developed and developing countries. However, most studies on tunnelling are in developed countries with the few exceptions of studies on China, India and Mexico. Using Oliver Williamson's Market and Hierarchy model this paper analyses the suitability of the governance requirements on tunnelling in Bangladesh and reports on interviews with non-independent directors, independent directors, and audit committee members. The study thus identifies the limitations and factors that affect the implementation and effectiveness of the current governance requirements to constrain tunnelling in companies in Bangladesh.

No previous studies have investigated such changes and their underlying causes; nor have they viewed the phenomena concerned through a dynamic lens. The study uses secondary data from 142 countries over a five-year period (2006-2010). Using growth curve modelling and the panel data method, the study finds that legal systems and law enforcement affect reforms positively. On average, countries’ MSRs are improving, but this is not consistent across nations. The findings contribute to the current debate on the relationship of law to minority shareholder protection and will assist policy-makers in the area of investor protection reforms. Future research directions are suggested at the end of the paper.

Two models were proposed based on past research. A first model tested a direct effect of internal locus of control on intrinsic job satisfaction (Direct Effect Model); and a second model tested a mediation effect of perceived creative environment linking internal locus of control to intrinsic job satisfaction (Mediational Model). Data were collected from those who graduated from a major research university in Japan (n=227). The study revealed that the direct effect of internal locus of control on intrinsic job satisfaction was positive and significant; also, the effect was partially mediated through perceived creative work environment. The meaning of the findings and directions for future research are discussed.

Though there are studies on discriminatory related party transactions, there has been limited effort to develop a measure for such discriminatory transactions. Current measures are based on weak theoretical underpinnings and prone to high measurement error. This paper develops and tests a new measure for these discriminatory transactions. Type 1, Type 2 error rates and power of the new measurement are compared with an existing measure using computer simulated and real data. The capital market sensitivity of the new measure is also tested and compared with an existing measure. The new measure is found to be superior. This is the first systematic effort to develop a measure for discriminatory related party transactions. It will contribute in policy-making in relation to discriminatory related party transactions.

It also examines the volatility persistence and asymmetric effect of information on the volatility of these two financial markets. Using data from January 1, 2009 to December 12, 2016 Taka/USD exchange rate’s volatility and the stock return’s volatility of CSE General Index this paper utilizes ARCH and GARCH models to investigate the spillover, persistence and asymmetry effect of volatility. The results reveal high level of presence of volatility of CSE General Index but not of the Taka/USD exchange rate. The result also finds asymmetric effect of information i.e. bad news is followed by higher volatility compared to that of after good news in the stock market. However, the result shows that volatility in the CSE General Index spillover that of the Taka/USD exchange rate but not vice versa. The meaning and significance of the study is also...
