This paper deals with the wandering Russian bards known as kalíki, who performed an oral repertoi... more This paper deals with the wandering Russian bards known as kalíki, who performed an oral repertoire of spiritual verses, historical legends and Byliny, playing the gusli, a psaltery-like instrument, and wandering through the vast landscape of medieval Russia and the Russian Empire. Their controversial and mysterious origin makes them an interesting and poetic topic of research. The Russian Middle Ages are characterized by an intense movement of ideas and people who, coming from East and West, crossed the vast Eurasian spaces leaving significant traces in popular culture. This paper aims to reflect on the cultural role of spiritual nomadism in traditional Russian culture through these protagonists of ancient literature. These wandering poets have not only influenced styles and themes of much of Russia’s literature up to the present, but they have also been the vehicle for information, doctrines, worldviews that are still waiting to be told.
