Background: Comparative studies on the use of meshes and acellular dermal matrices (ADM) in impla... more Background: Comparative studies on the use of meshes and acellular dermal matrices (ADM) in implant-based breast reconstruction (IBBR) have not yet been performed. Methods: This prospective, randomized, controlled, multicenter pilot study was performed at four Austrian breast cancer centers. 50 patients with oncologic or prophylactic indication for mastectomy and IBBR were randomized to immediate IBBR with either an ADM (Protexa®) or a titanized mesh (TiLOOP® Bra). Complications, failed reconstruction, cosmetic outcome, patients' quality of life and the thickness of the overlying tissue were recorded immediately postoperatively and three and six months after surgery. Results: 48 patients participated in the study (Protexa® group: 23; TiLOOP® Bra group: 25 patients). The overall complication rate was 31.25% with similar rates in both groups (Protexa® group nine vs. TiLOOP® Bra group six; p=0.188). There was a higher incidence of severe complications leading to failed reconstructions with implant loss in the Protexa® group than in the TiLOOP® Bra group (seven vs. two; p<0.0001). An inverted T-incision technique led to significantly more complications and reconstructive failure with Protexa® (p=0.037, p=0.012, respectively). There were no significant differences in patients' satisfaction with cosmetic results (p=0.632), but surgeons and external specialists graded significantly better outcomes with TiLOOP® Bra (p=0.034, p=0.032). This pilot study showed use of TiLOOP® Bra or Protexa® in IBBR and was feasible leading to good cosmetic outcomes and high patient satisfaction. To validate the higher failure rates in the Protexa® group, data from a larger trial were required. Daphne Gschwantler-Kaulich has completed her specialization in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, in 2009 with further specialization in Senology, Hereditary Breast Cancer and Breast Reconstruction. She has published more than 30 papers in reputed journals.

Facing energy challenge, software developers’ have to design save-energy programs. In this paper, an extended version of CL-MAC (CrossLayer-MAC) is slightly presented dealing with packet loss problem modeled using Time Petri net (TPN). TiNA (Time Net Analyzer) tool is used to validate the proposed model. The obtained properties such liveness, boundedness and reversibility prove the correct behavior of the new version of CLMAC where lost packets problem is solved. Basically, CL-MAC protocol was designed to reduce both energy and latency. Its main engine is to wake-up only nodes within the routing path.

Currently, for various reasons, authorities are facing the problem of locating a particular vehic... more Currently, for various reasons, authorities are facing the problem of locating a particular vehicle. Some cars are equipped by a geographical positioning system (GPS), but fake or those used in criminal acts have their GPS off. Therefore, locating and target tracking in Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) is gaining more attention in the research field due to all the envisioned applications that rely on it, such as endlessly tracking a particular vehicle knowing only its license plate number. This is a vital and challenging problem to merge with the dynamic nature of VANETs and the high speed of its nodes. In this paper we try to alleviate this problem by proposing a novel infrastructureless and lightweight tracking algorithm that allows authorities to constantly track a target node. Based on the clustering model, nodes surrounding the target have to collaborate to keep the target in sight and continuously inform the control center (the authorities' base station). A performance evaluation of our proposed solution is performed by using the NS2 simulator.

The main objective of this paper is to secure a cross-layer, energy efficient MAC protocol (CL-MA... more The main objective of this paper is to secure a cross-layer, energy efficient MAC protocol (CL-MAC) dedicated to delay sensitive wireless sensor networks (WSN) for detecting and avoiding wormhole attack. CL-MAC protocol is the result of our previous research works for which the security aspects have not been taken into consideration during its design stage. To formally prove the importance of the proposed scheme, we provide a theoretical study based on Time Petri Net to analyse some important properties related to the devastating effect of the wormhole attack and its countermeasure on the CL-MAC operations. Also, we perform an experimental evaluation through the simulation using realistic scenarios in order to show the performance of the proposal in terms of energy saving, packets loss ratio and latency. The obtained results indicate the usefulness of the formal study provided in this work when applied in security context and confirm clearly a good performance of the proposed scheme against wormhole attack.

Due to faults or malicious nodes, sensor data collected or reported might be wrong. Hence it is important to detect the presence of wrong sensor readings and misleading reports [18]. In this paper, we present a formal model using Time Petri Net to formally evaluate a proposed solution for detecting wormhole attack in CL-MAC, a cross-layer MAC protocol developed at MAC layer for energy efficient and low latency in WSN [3] [7]. Lunching wormhole attack in CL-MAC can cause the protocol invalid in some scenarios. Wormhole attack in CL-MAC is discussed, and a formal approach based on Time Petri Net (TPN) to detect wormhole attack is presented. TiNA (Time Net Analyzer) TPN tool is used to highlight the formal properties of the proposed solution. The obtained analytical results show that the secured version of CL-MAC can effectively detect and avoid wormhole attack, and make more sensor nodes perform a valid behavior.

VANET networks are characterized by their high mobile topology changes. Clustering is one of the control schemes used to make this global topology less dynamic. It allows the formation of dynamic virtual backbone used to organize the medium access, to support quality of service and to simplify routing. Mainly, nodes are organized into clusters with at least one cluster head (CH) node that is responsible for the coordination tasks of its cluster. In this sight, our paper introduces a clustering mechanism based for connectivity maintenance in VANET. The proposed solution is experimentally evaluated using NS2 simulator.
