Reliable Service -Oriented Architecture for Nasa ’s Mars Exploration Rover Mission

The Collaborative Information Portal (CIP) was created by NASA's Ames Research Center and Jet Pro... more The Collaborative Information Portal (CIP) was created by NASA's Ames Research Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission. Both MER and CIP have performed beyond their expectations. Mission managers, engineers, scientists, and mission researchers conduct CIPs within JPL mission control, and scientists conduct CIPs in their laboratories, homes, and offices. Users are securely connected through the internet. Since the mission took place at the time of Mars, the CIP displayed current time in different time zones of the planet Mars and Earth and introduced staff and event schedules with Martian time scales. In this paper, we present the MER and CIP mission summaries. We show how the CIP helped to meet some of the mission needs and how people used it. We discuss the criteria for choosing its architecture, web services (current time ratio between planet Earth and planet Mars, conversion of Martian (Sol) and Earth Day, and direct connection to planet Mars) and describe how developers made the software so reliable. CIP reliability did not come by chance, but was the result of several key design decisions.

The Collaborative Information Portal (CIP) was enterprise software developed jointly by the NASA ... more The Collaborative Information Portal (CIP) was enterprise software developed jointly by the NASA Ames Research Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for NASA's highly successful Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission. Both MER and CIP have performed far beyond their original expectations. 1, 2 Mission managers and engineers ran CIP inside the mission control room at JPL, and the scientists ran CIP in their laboratories, homes, and offices. All the users connected securely over the Internet. Since the mission ran on Mars time, CIP displayed the current time in various Mars and Earth time zones, and it presented staffing and event schedules with Martian time scales. Users could send and receive broadcast messages, and they could view and download data and image files generated by the rovers' instruments. CIP had a three-tiered, service-oriented architecture (SOA) based on industry standards, including J2EE and web services, and it integrated commercial off-the-shelf software. A user's interactions with the graphical interface of the CIP client application generated web services requests to the CIP middleware. The middleware accessed the back-end data repositories if necessary and returned results for these requests. The client application could make multiple service requests for a single user action and then present a composition of the results. This happened transparently, and many users did not even realize that they were connecting to a server. CIP

We will attempt to provide an overview and analysis of standards in the field of web service security, specifically SOAP messages, using Kerberos authentication, which is a computer network security protocol that provides users with high security for requests between two or more hosts located in an unreliable location such as the internet.Everything that has to do with Kerberos has to deal with systems that rely on data authentication.

Nowadays, we can allege that technology and economic developments highly depend from software sys... more Nowadays, we can allege that technology and economic developments highly depend from software systems, even if all other actions are performed (planning or design), without having implemented a specific software for fulfilling the needs of our businesses, we would have a lot of difficulties to manage our inputs/outputs, and also the balance of our incomings and the responsibilities of the work force, because the software controls the entire business engagement and enables us to use virtually the actions that are planned and designed. The role of a software engineer is not as easy as it might seem, the work done in this area is comparable with the buildings architecture, we can not start building a house if we don’t have the designed architecture plan, it is the same for software development, we cannot start building a serious software system if we don’t have the UML diagrams or developed a critical path for managing the time of the software development. Our paper focuses mainly in using the CPM/PERT techniques to find the longest path through a network and the minimum project completion time for implementing a model for ranking services according to their importance.

To assist manage this complexity they need to be modeled. This paper introduces a new way of modeling Web services through the UML Diagrams dedicated for a specific use case. Web services can be seen as a new paradigm for the interconnection of classes and the communication among them. They determine three main functions, the service, the repository (directory) and the consumer. The service provider publishes the created Web service to the directory, with intention that consumers can find them and bind a required service. We strive to indicate the UML modeling of the activities occurred in Web services, which would be useful for their coders or their providers to implement them. The paper deals with the UML diagrams and their implementation in a specific case study for a Traveller Management System (TMS).

Based on our monitoring in our country there is a lack of implementation of the student evaluation systems in the Higher Educational Institutions, therefore we decided to develop a heterogeneous system composed of web services and deployed in IaaS cloud. Student evaluation system is a prototype which allows students to commit evaluation on instructors online. It is designed in such way that meets all the student requirements, faculty requirements and it is user friendly. We aim a heterogeneous, because it will be consisted of composite web services. Service composition indicates the development of complex applications using several web services that are coordinated. Furthermore, we have conducted analysis of deployment models and cloud types for this prototype system in the cloud computing system.

This paper focuses on performance and comparison between Remote Procedure Calls, Representational State Transfer and Service Oriented Architecture, by analyzing and comparing the performance of web services in a certain level by applying empirical methodology for comparison. Architectural principles and aspects will be the main standard for the comparison by including protocol layering, heterogeneity dealing, loose coupling and service identification. Furthermore, the phases of web service evolution are presented in this paper and the progress that is made till nowadays. The results from the performance and comparison will help software engineers decide which of the styles is more suitable to use web services for solving their problems.

Service composition indicates the development of a complex application using several web services and it is related to the language for specifying business process behavior or WS-BPEL. In this paper we will intent to compare and analyze two types of service composition, Orchestration and Choreography by using the comparison methods called “Architectural Decision” to determine differences and specify the type of business process they can be used to solve. Furthermore, we will analyze SOA paradigm and REST for using web services by defining their advantages and disadvantages, which is very important for software architects, which one to choose when dealing with web services.
