Unfortunately, while URIs almost guarantee a direct reference to entities, the relation between the two is not bijective. Many different URI references to same concepts and entities can arise when--in such a heterogeneous setting as the WWW--people independently build new ontologies, or populate shared ones with new arbitrarily identified individuals.

Submission of this graph is however not trivial as while a list of keywords of interest can be provided by any user, the formulation of semantic queries is not easy as well.

This paper reports the experience of the development and the evaluation of a set of pre-competiti... more This paper reports the experience of the development and the evaluation of a set of pre-competitive tools to support legal professionals in exploring a complex corpus of norms and documents in the legal domain. The research addresses two complementary goals: using ICT to support the simplification of the corpus of norms and using ICT to facilitate search and retrieval of information in large archives in the legal domain. The contribution of this work is in the development of tools beyond state of the art for the e-discovery of relationships between sections of norms or other legal documents. To reach the best results in terms of effectiveness, the tools combine statistical and the semantic approaches. The effectiveness of the statistical tool has been measured in terms of precision, through an assessment procedure that involved some experts of the legal domain.

Still, the whole range of models and technologies which will change forever the way we interact with the web, seems to be missing from every-day technologies available on our personal computers. Ontologies, annotation facilities and semantic querying could (and should) bring new life to Personal Information Management, supporting users in contrasting the ever-growing information overload they are facing in these years, overwhelmed by plethora of communication channels and media. In this paper we present our attempt in bringing the Semantic Web Knowledge Management paradigm at the availability of diverse personal desktop tools (Web Browser, Mail clients, Agenda etc…), by evolving Web Browser Semantic extension Semantic Turkey to an extensible framework providing RDF data access at different levels: java access through OSGi extensions, HTTP access or dedicated JavaScript API for the whole range of tools from the open source suite of Mozilla applications

To perform the work reported such a service has been integrated and customized in the framework of the DILIGENT project which concluded in 2007. The service proposed is a web browser ontology based extension: at the application layer the interaction between DILIGENT end-users and this service takes place from within the DILIGENT web portal. The service described allows end users to capture and annotate on-demand the information stored in the DILIGENT infrastructure and to organize it according to the user's representation of the specific ontological domain. The effort spent meets today end users' requirements in the EO application domain, applying an innovative solution to make specific actors keep track of the information of interest in a personalized and easy way. End users are able to store, access and play only with the information of interest and under their own (ontological) perspective.

In this work we describe Semantic Turkey, a Semantic Extension for the popular web browser Mozill... more In this work we describe Semantic Turkey, a Semantic Extension for the popular web browser Mozilla Firefox. Semantic Turkey can be used to keep track of relevant information from visited web sites and organize collected content according to a personally defined ontology. In this sense, Semantic Turkey can be seen both as an advanced semantic bookmarking system as well as an ontology editing assistant, which allows domain experts and ontology developers to build ontologies starting from the very raw source of information which they find on the web. The open architecture of Semantic Turkey and the specific threelayered approach of its design also allows for scaling the basic personal desktop application embodied by this tool up to a distributed framework for collaborative semantic annotation and ontology editing. This paper describes the architecture and the functionalities of the Semantic Turkey extension for Firefox, and describe possible evolutions for future improvement of the tool.
