Perinatal undernutrition may lead to important metabolic adaptations in adult life, short stature being the most visible. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between stature and total energy expenditure of low-income women. Women aged 19-45 years from low-income communities in Maceió-AL were recruited. A sample of 67 volunteers was selected and divided into either short stature (≤152.4 cm; n = 34) or non-short stature (≥158.7 cm; n = 33) group. Data on socioeconomic status, anthropometric variables, and hormonal profiles was collected. Total energy expenditure and body composition were assessed by the doubly labeled water technique with multiple points over 14 days. The present study aimed to investigate the possible changes in anthropometric and biochemical parameters in low-income women living in the outskirts of Maceió (northeast Brazil), and to explore the possible role of dietary intake and physical activity in these changes. A prospective longitudinal study was conducted in a cohort of mothers of malnourished children who attended the Center for Nutritional Recovery and Education, an outreach programme of the Federal University of Alagoas. Socio-economic, anthropometric, biochemical and dietary intake data were assessed at baseline and after a follow-up period of 4 years. Energy expenditure (using doubly labelled water) and physical activity (using triaxial accelerometers) were assessed only in a subgroup of women after 4 years. A total of eighty-five women were assessed. Participants showed an altered biochemical profile, increased systolic blood pressure, decreased thyroid hormone levels, and body-weight gain. However, dietary intakes of the participants did not include large quantities of highly processed and high-glycaemic index foods. The energy intake of the participants did not differ from their total energy expenditure (7990·3 (7173·7 -8806·8) v. 8798·1 (8169·0-9432·4) kJ, respectively; P¼ 0·084). Multivariate analyses showed a significant effect of time spent watching television (b ¼ 0·639 (0·003 to 1·275); P¼ 0·048) and dietary diversity score (b ¼ 21·039 (2 2·010 to 2 0·067); P¼ 0·036) on weight gain. The present study indicates that poor women, who are mothers of malnourished children and have a reasonably balanced dietary intake, exhibit weight gain and are at risk of developing chronic diseases.

One-third of all Trypanosoma cruzi-infected patients eventually develop chronic Chagas' disease cardiomyopathy (CCC), a particularly lethal inflammatory dilated cardiomyopathy, where parasites are scarce and heart-infiltrating mononuclear cells seem to be the effectors of tissue damage. Since T. cruzi is a major inducer of interleukin-12 production, the role of inflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of CCC was investigated. We assayed cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from CCC and asymptomatic T. cruzi-infected (ASY) individuals, as well as by T cell lines from endomyocardial biopsies from CCC patients. PBMC from CCC and ASY patients produced higher IFN-levels than normal (N) individuals in response to B13 protein and phytohaemagglutinin PHA; IFN-high responders (≥1 ng/ml) were 2-3 fold more frequent among CCC patients than ASY individuals. Conversely, IL-4 production in response to the same stimuli was suppressed among T. cruzi-infected patients. The frequency of PHA-induced IFNproducing cells on PBMC was significantly higher among CCC than ASY and N individuals. IFN-and TNF-were produced by ten out of ten PHAstimulated T cell lines from CCC patients; IL-2 and IL-10 were produced by four out of ten and one out of ten lines, respectively; IL-4, IL-1 , IL-1 , IL-6 and IL-12 were undetectable. Our results suggest that CCC and ASY patients may respond differentially to the IFN--inducing stimulus provided by T. cruzi infection. Given the T 1 -type cytokine profile of heart-infiltrating T cell lines from CCC patients, the ability to mount a vigorous IFN-response may play a role on the differential susceptibility to CCC development.

Resumo O artigo dedica-se a investigar os caminhos que a água, como elemento vital e produto de negociação, vem tomando em virtude de sua evidente escassez em meio à devastação ambiental crescente. Tem como enfoque norteador as questões: o que poderá a humanidade esperar da diminuição de água potável no planeta; que perspectivas são esperadas de assinaturas de acordos e de manifestos que recriam o sentido da ética nas organizações e revitalizam os conceitos de responsabilidade e sustentabilidade nas organizações; qual a responsabilidade do indivíduo no papel de protagonista de uma história na qual destrói suas próprias fontes de vida. A pesquisa pergunta: será que a preocupação manifestada por autoridades de diversas ordens sobre a escassez de água no planeta procede? O trabalho investiga por que a preocupação com a água vem ganhando importância nas discussões sobre o meio ambiente em todas as nações e em muitas entidades globais. Descreve sobre a legislação da água, do seu consumo e do desenvolvimento sustentável. Aponta o nível de conhecimento sobre a escassez de água no planeta por parte de 10,21% da comunidade acadêmica de duas Instituições de Ensino Superior da cidade de Pato Branco, Paraná, uma delas pública e uma privada, especificamente 219 acadêmicos da Universidade Federal Tecnológica do Paraná (UTFPR), e 184 acadêmicos da Faculdade Mater Dei, respectivamente, investigados por meio de aplicação de questionário. Indica a falta de informações acerca da real problematização sobre a água no planeta, e resistência na adoção de novos hábitos de consumo por descrença ou por relutância em mudança de comportamento. Tais resultados implicam em um novo questionamento sobre a direção a ser tomada pela sociedade de capital diante da escassez de água no planeta e da extensão de seus reflexos a nível global com mudanças imperceptíveis de reversão. Abstract The article dedicates to investigate it the ways that the water, as vital element and product of negotiation, comes taking in virtue of its evident scarcity in way to the increasing ambient devastation. It has as guiding approach the questions: what the humanity will be able to wait of the drinking waters reduction in the planet; that perspective they are waited of signatures of agreements and manifestos that to raise the direction of the ethics in the organizations and revitalize the concepts of responsibility and support in the organizations; which the responsibility of the individual in the paper of protagonist of a history in which it destroys its proper sources of life. The research asks: it will be that the concern revealed for authorities of diverse orders on the water scarcity in the planet proceeds? The work investigates why the concern with the water comes gaining importance in the quarrels on the environment in all the nations and many global entities. It describes on the legislation of the water, its consumption and the sustainable development. It points the knowledge level on the water scarcity in the planet on the part of 10,21% of the academic community of two Institutions of Superior Education of the city of White Duck, Paraná, an one of them public and private one, specifically 219 academics of the Technological Federal University of the Paraná (UTFPR), and 184 academics of the College Mater Dei, respectively, investigated by means of questionnaire application. It indicates the lack of information concerning the real problematization on the water in the planet, and resistance in the adoption of new habits of consumption for incredulity or reluctance in behavior change. Such results ahead imply in a new questioning on the direction to be taken by the society of capital of the water scarcity in the planet and of the extension of its consequences the global level with imperceptible changes of reversion.

Neste artigo, objetivou-se destacar a contribuição de vários autores para o conhecimento e a nomenclatura das unidades geocronológicas. Revisou-se sucintamente a história da Geologia e da Paleontologia desde a Antiguidade Clássica até o século XIX, no qual houve as contribuições relevantes relacionadas às unidades de tempo geológico e seus respectivos nomes. Neste trabalho são fornecidas informações gerais a respeito dos eventos que ocorreram em cada um desses momentos da história geológica do planeta. Além disso, procurou-se realizar uma análise dos nomes dessas unidades, bem como de seus elementos de composição, mencionados por autores clássicos. Para isso, foram incluídas informações históricas, além das etimológicas e semânticas relacionadas aos termos considerados, por meio de consulta a dicionários linguísticos e especializados nas áreas geológicas, paleontológicas e biológicas, assim como de livros e artigos científicos pertinentes ao tema.
