Dr Wahid Murad is an academic with interest in economics, qualitative analysis, and environmental science and management. His research area is environmental science and management with a focus on modelling human-environment interactions, climate change management, and sustainability. He led some funded research projects to completion and numerous international research collaborations with scholars in countries such as Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Turkey, and the USA. Environmental health problems experienced by Malaysia originate mainly from atmospheric pollution... more Environmental health problems experienced by Malaysia originate mainly from atmospheric pollution, water pollution, climate change, ozone depletion, solid waste management as well as toxic, chemical, and hazardous waste management. With respect to atmospheric pollution, the country faces the problems of urban air pollution due mainly to emissions from the industrial, power generation, and transportation sectors as well as trans-boundary haze pollution. Water resources are increasingly under threat due to water pollution and rising demand, whereas changes in weather patterns, increases in extreme weather, and natural disasters as well as changes in seasons which are attributed to climate change. Future changes in climate are expected to cause rising sea levels, loss of agricultural production, and variations in freshwater availability, among others. Various measures are being taken to address these challenges. The Ministry of Health of Malaysia is actively pursuing the environmental health agenda in Malaysia. The capacity of all state and district health officers on environmental health is being strengthened. The cooperation with other agencies at district, state, and national levels, to resolve social, economic, and environmental issues, is also being enhanced for this purpose.

This study is an attempt to investigate the poverty-environment paradox from the perspective of a... more This study is an attempt to investigate the poverty-environment paradox from the perspective of an emerging country, namely Malaysia. To test the paradox, this study assesses attitude and behaviour of the urban poor with reference to solid waste management and their willingness to pay for an improved solid waste collection and disposal service in their residential areas. Empirical results nullify the null hypothesis, favouring urban poor as their attitude and behaviour are found to be environmentally sound and surprisingly ethical. Also, their willingness to pay for improving environmental conditions is considered to be good news for local governments, who could use this strategy in their efforts to improve the environmental conditions related to household waste management and to reduce urban poverty. Policies and initiatives, which are aiming at improving living conditions of urban poor and raising awareness among stakeholders, are crucial for reducing both the environmental degradation and urban poverty.

Initiatives and Challenges of Agricultural Crop Sector in East Coast Economic Region (ECER) Development Projects in Malaysia

The share of agriculture to GDP is continuously declining in Malaysia, but agricultural sector is... more The share of agriculture to GDP is continuously declining in Malaysia, but agricultural sector is very crucial to ensure food security, employment generation, socioeconomic improvement, economic growth, poverty reduction and overall achievement of vision 2020. The East Coast Economic Region (ECER) represents 34% of total national agricultural area, which has a good potentiality to improve productivity and reduce high poverty intensity in this area. Realizing the importance, Malaysian government has taken a large development project in the ECER region in 2006, but much is not known about the project due to limited number of study and unavailability of official performance report of the project. Hence this study is an attempt to explore one of the niche areas, which is agricultural crops sector. The major initiatives of agricultural crops sector include establishing three agro valleys as major vegetable and short-term crop growing areas. These involve organized modern farming methods in a sustainable manner to improve efficiency and productivity of agricultural production of paddy, vegetables and fruits. The prospects of the project are also very much anticipative, because the size of domestic market has grown in recent years. But there are lots of challenges to meet the target of the project. Institutional supports, physical infrastructural supports like transportations, irrigations and preservation facilities are not adequate in this area. To meet the target and to ensure the success of the projects, some more initiatives for improvements and proper management are also necessary. These include, for example, farmer's cooperative or institutional involvement for marketing the crops, financial supports and subsidies, cooperation among agents and departments, training to avoid environment degradations and adaptation techniques to cope with adverse effects of climatic changes, etc. It is expected that the relevant government authority and agencies, especially the ECER project authority, will be highly benefited from the findings of the study.

Determinants of neonatal, infant and under-five mortalities: evidence from a developing country, Bangladesh

We investigated the macroeconomic determinants of neonatal, infant, and underfive mortalities in ... more We investigated the macroeconomic determinants of neonatal, infant, and underfive mortalities in Bangladesh for the period 1991-2018 and discuss implications of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) and Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG 4) for developing countries. We used annual time series data and the econometric techniques of Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) regressions for analysis. Determinants most effective in combating neonatal, infant, and under-five mortalities include variables such as 'protecting newborns against tetanus', 'increasing healthcare expenditure', and 'making sure births are attended by skilled healthcare staff'. Employing more healthcare workers and assuring more and improved healthcare provisions can further reduce the neonatal, infant, and under-five mortalities. Developing countries with similar macroeconomic profiles can achieve similar SDG 3 and MDG 4 outcomes by emulating the policies and strategies Bangladesh applied to reducing child mortalities over the last three decades.

The Performance of Islamic Banks during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis: Evidence from the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries

Purpose-The purpose of this study is to analyze the profitability performance of Islamic banks of... more Purpose-The purpose of this study is to analyze the profitability performance of Islamic banks of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region during 2008 global financial crisis. Design/methodology/approach-Bank specific data are taken from the Bank Scope database and macroeconomic data are collected from International Financial Statistics. Using a panel data series of 30 banks for the period of 2005 to 2011, the study shows the evidence of structural break for the crisis year as well as the factors that impact the profitability of Islamic banks. Findings-The performance of GCC Islamic banks was significantly influenced during the crisis period by capital adequacy, credit risk, financial risk, operational efficiency, liquidity, bank size, gross domestic product, growth rate of money supply, bank sector development and inflation rate. The study also finds that there is a structural change before and after the global financial crisis. Originality/value-This is an original study that shows that the shariah compliant banks have performed better during the crisis and are not affected based on their internal performance records; rather, they have been affected indirectly from the macro shock due to the overall economic crisis.

The growth of introducing mobile learning has dramatically reshaped teaching and learning process... more The growth of introducing mobile learning has dramatically reshaped teaching and learning processes in education (Hwang & Chang, 2011; Marwan, Madar, & Fuad, 2014; Wu, Hwang, Su, & Huang, 2012). The use of smart phones offers a powerful learning environment and can transform the learning and teaching process so that students can deal with knowledge in an active, self-directed and constructive way (Cheon, Lee, Crooks, & Song, 2012). At present the smart phone is considered an important means to promote new methods of instruction (teaching and learning). It can be used to develop students' skills for cooperation, communication, problem solving and lifelong learning (Gikas & Grant, 2013). By adopting mobile internet, we can offer high quality education. Chhachhar, Makhijani, Khushk, and Maher (2013) identified four distinct faces of quality education, which can be supported by ICT: learning by doing, real time conversation, delayed time conversation and directed instruction. Higgins and Associates (2003) and Rau, Gao, and Wu (2008) suggested that the use of ICT and mobile internet could improve performance, teaching, and administration, have a positive impact on education as a whole. The information and communication technology (ICT) revolution brings specific challenges to education systems around the world. Due to its easy accessibility this means of education using ICT has become very popular all over the world. In this present world the smart phone is part and parcel of the modern communication system. With the benefits of the internet service, especially mobile internet service like 3G and 4G, the worlds' information is on hand to everyone. This paper intends to present an idea about mobile internet based education all over the globe and its applicability in Bangladesh along with investigating the developing progress of ICT in educational institutions and educational organization related activities and provides comprehensive recommendations to build better learning in Bangladesh in the near future.

Waste management and recycling practices of the urban poor: a case study in Kuala Lumpur city, Malaysia

This study assesses waste management and recycling practices of the urban poor households residin... more This study assesses waste management and recycling practices of the urban poor households residing as squatters and in low cost flats of Kuala Lumpur city, Malaysia. To attain the objective, the study employed some statistical techniques such as t-tests of equality of means, one-way analysis of variance, chisquared ‘likelihood ratio’ tests, and simple descriptive statistics. The statistical techniques were used to determine and analyse the factors that significantly influence the environmental behaviour of the urban poor concerning solid waste management, particularly their recycling practices. The findings of the study show that the urban poor and low-income communities have been proved to behave in ways that are consistent with and conducive to environmentally friendly solid waste management. This study provides evidence that the urban poor and low-income communities are the main recyclers, re-users, and source-reducers of their household solid waste. The study, however, suggests that policies should be formulated to focus on promoting knowledge, education, and the skills of the urban poor and, in addition, to empower them as a means of improving their quality of life.

The objective of this study is to analyse the rationales, challenges and prospects of Dhaka City ... more The objective of this study is to analyse the rationales, challenges and prospects of Dhaka City being split up, for the purposes of creating a sustainable city grounded in relevant theories and widely used and accepted standards. An assessment of Dhaka being divided in accordance with the concept of City Development Strategies reveals considerable deficiencies in most aspects of public goods and services provisions. Whilst splitting Dhaka into separate sections supports the "World City Hypothesis" it is not without criticisms, for instance those raised by urban planners, experts and politicians. The lack of resources and oversight to address those deficiencies and problems and the administrative, allocative, economic and social inefficiencies makes it very difficult for Dhaka's authorities to achieve sustainable urbanisation. Therefore, appropriate strategies must be implemented by government to resolve these problems, inefficiencies and mismanagement in order for the city to be liveable sustainable.
