Sulla base di un’epigrafe greca perduta, tramandata soltanto da una copia manoscritta dell’inizio... more Sulla base di un’epigrafe greca perduta, tramandata soltanto da una copia manoscritta dell’inizio del XVI secolo che è conservata in un codice Ottoboniano, si è ritenuto in passato di poter collocare nella primavera dell’anno 589 un presunto esarca d’Italia di nome Giuliano, che avrebbe detenuto tale carica soltanto per pochi giorni o settimane. Una rilettura e una nuova interpretazione dell’iscrizione, che si colloca nell’ambiente degli oriundi alessandrini nella città di Roma e si riferisce al santuario «nazionale» di s. Mena lungo la Via Ostiense, permette di ottenere un testo epigrafico in apparenza più leggibile e coerente, e di formulare nuove ipotesi sul contesto e sulle personalità coinvolte, e ulteriori riflessioni sui rapporti ecclesiastici di Roma con Alessandria d’Egitto alla fine del VI secolo.
Thanks to a lost Greek inscription preserved only in an early sixteenth-century manuscript now in the Ottoboni collection, it was believed in the past that a presumed exarch of Italy by the name of Julianus held this position only for a few days or weeks in the spring of 589. However, a new reconstruction and interpretation of this inscription – which comes from the milieu of the Alexandrians living in the city of Rome and refers to their national church of st. Menas along the Via Ostiensis – provide us with an epigraphic text that seems easier to read and makes better sense. This revised text allows us to formulate new hypotheses regarding the context and individuals named in this document as well making possible further reflections on the ecclesiastical relations of Rome with Alexandria in Egypt at the end of the 6th century.

This article re-examines the origin and meaning of two obscure words (*κορδάκιον and *ζάρζακον) c... more This article re-examines the origin and meaning of two obscure words (*κορδάκιον and *ζάρζακον) contained in two letters of Leo of Synnada (ep. 27 and 43). Si sa structure multiethnique est bien un caractère fondamental de l'Empire byzantin, une considération attentive de celle-ci devrait être parmi les présupposés indispensables à toute étude de son héritage littéraire, artistique et scientifique, ainsi que de sa culture matérielle. Cette affirmation est, certes, largement partagée dans les études modernes sur le monde byzantin, du moins en théorie. Cependant, on peut déplorer que les implications concrètes de ce postulat, sur le plan des phénomènes historiques et culturels, ne soient pas toujours gardées à l'esprit dans la pratique quotidienne de la recherche. * Ce texte -qui, pour laisser plus de temps aux autres intervenants que Marie Cronier et moi avions invités, n'a pas été prononcé lors de la table ronde du Congrès international des études byzantines de Venise et Padoue dont les Actes sont publiés dans le présent volume de la Rivista -est la reprise, plus développée, d'une partie de la première des quatre conférences que j'ai données à Paris à l'École pratique des Hautes études au printemps 2018, et qui sont restées inédites (on peut lire un bref résumé de l'ensemble de ces séminaires dans F. D'Aiuto, Aux frontières orientales de Byzance. Textes, manuscrits, types d'écriture grecque, dans Annuaire de l'École pratique des Hautes études. Section des sciences historiques et philologiques 150 (2017-2018) [2019], pp. 75-87 [ nals.openedition.org/ashp/2910]). This article offers a new reading and exegesis of the metrical colophon of the manuscript Paris, ... more This article offers a new reading and exegesis of the metrical colophon of the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, gr. 290. The text of this short scribal poem is, in fact, disfigured by a large number of misspellings and by probable misunderstandings of some expressions of one or more poorly imitated «poetic» models. Over the last two centuries, various attempts at interpretation have resulted in divergent datings of this codex to the years 1157 or 1257, or even to its generic assignment to the 13th century. A date of 1157, however, would pose a palaeographic problem: were this codex to be dated to that year, it would represent by far the oldest example of the so-called «à μεν distendu» style, a Greek script that seems to be typical of the island of Rhodes and surrounding areas and is attested between the last decades of the 12th and the mid-13th centuries. This study, by contrast, argues that a date of 1257 seems much more likely, thus placing this codex among the latest dated witnesses of this type of script.
