Location of a small archaic kome, originally a marginal and not particularly desirable area, Piraeus, on the initiative of Themistocles, was soon to become the founding pillar of the rising thalassocracy of Athens. Sources, epigraphs and archaeological data yield fragments of the defensive, urban and monumental layout of the port city from no earlier than the mid-5 th century BC. There is little material data relating to the pre-Themistoclean settlement of the area and the impression of a still almost completely evanescent Themistoclean phase of the new ktisis is undeniable. Published or only partially published and largely overlooked data concerning the Athenian coastal belt as a whole, diachronically considered, stimulate new observations and contribute towards reopening a long-silent debate on the archaeology of Piraeus prior to Hippodamus' revolutionary project and the full integration, not only institutional and administrative, of the peninsula into the chora of Athens.

Zancani’s reports, supplemented by the study of documents preserved in the School’s archives, contribute to recovering the memory
of forgotten investigations and to outlining the profile of a highly promising scholar of the classical world prematurely deceased in 1927.

As a sign of gratitude Themistokles or, according to other sources, Conon would have established a splendid sanctuary to the goddess, clearly visible along the shores of the port of Kantharos. Large groups of epigraphic documents, datable, mainly, between the second half of the 4th century BC and the early Hellenistic period, are evidence that the goddess was worshipped by various communities of foreign origin based in Piraeus. In this contribution we propose to re-examine this documentation and to reconstruct, as far as possible, the contexts in which the considerable archaeological material related to the cult of Aphrodite in its multiple manifestations was found at Piraeus, by placing the realia within a reliable historical and topographical framework.

XI 501d-f) allows us to learn about a centuries-old debate, which from the Hellenistic Period to the Imperial Age engaged the Alexandrian scholars. In complete agreement with the interpretations by Eratosthenes of Cyrene, Asclepiades of Myrlea and Timarchus, the term, only documented in a fragment of Cratinus’ Drapetides, seems to owe its origin to an intentional allusion to the roofing systems of the most ancient baths in the Greek world (balaneia). In this paper, in addition to an excursus on the most recent discoveries about the so called ‘Greek Style Baths’ of the Classical and Hellenistic periods, allowing a better understanding of the observations made by the Hellenistic philologists, it is believed that the origin of this reference lies perfectly in the period when the Drapetides were performed, as the revolutionary lifestyle of bathing with hot water in public buildings became a common theme in the repertoires of the poets of Old Comedy.

Beyond an evident paralogism, functional to a somewhat paradoxical justification of the preference given by young Athenians at the end of the 5th century BCE to public baths instead of gymnasia, the testimony proved useful to undertake preliminary research on the archaeology of a cult. Literary sources, inscribed documents and archaeological evidence reveal the outline of a deep-rooted association of Heracles with thermal springs. Gift of the gods, at Thermopylae as well as in Sicily near the city of Himera, hot waters were believed to be a much appreciated reward for warriors and athletes, providing rest and a guarantee of eternal regeneration.

Nevertheless, critical analysis of the text gives the occasion to disclose new perspectives on a still neglected topic in archaeological research. In this paper a preliminary attempt is made to investigate the ‘other side’ of natron deposits exploitation, independently and much earlier than its experimentation in glass workshops. Literary sources, inscribed documents and archaeological evidence, especially from Egypt and Greece, from the Early Classical to the Late Imperial period are discussed trying to investigate the almost invisible traces of both properly said natron and counterfeit soda from different areas of Eastern Mediterranean.

The Monument of the Eponymous Heroes in Athens has been identified with the long base discovered during the American excavations in the southwestern sector of the Agora of Athens, opposite the Metroon. Through detailed analysis and stratigraphic excavations of the still visible remains, scholars have managed to shed light on the history and structural evolution of this monument from the second half of the fourth century BC until the time of Hadrian.

The stele HA 1489 at the Martin von Wagner Museum in Würzburg is the only epigraphic evidence dating to the classical period that concerns a balaneus. Balaneis were a particular category of workers assigned to effectively manage the most ancient Public Baths of the Greek world, the balaneia. This unique epigraphic evidence is especially significant when one considers the general dearth of semata erected for the commemoration of men and women engaged in banausikai technai. The technical, stylistic, epigraphic, and contextual study of this stele, dedicated to the balaneus Kallias and to Kallistrate, daughter of Myops, allows for an analysis of the social status of the ‘Athenian’ balaneis from the 5th to the 4th century BCE, as well as a unique opportunity
to examine aspects of the often misunderstood balaneutike techne.

Mikrolimano (ancient Mounichia). In the last five years a new research program has been carried on by Carmelo Di Nicuolo with the auspices of the Italian Archaeological School of Athens and in collaboration with the 26th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Piraeus (Paragraph 1). After the first surveys in the area of the baths in 2008-2009 a collaboration with Prof. Vladimiro Achilli and his staff (Laboratory of Detection and Geomatics of the University of Padova – «LRG»-) was activated in 2010, in order to realize a technologically advanced graphic documentation with
Laser Scanner, which is producing a lot of evidence for a new comprehension of the main functional and architectonic features of the bathing establishment. As it appeared to be clear since the first excavation of the so called «Serangheion bath», this complex was not linked to any systemfor water supply, thus creating several doubts about the same nature and real original function of it. To answer the question about
how water could have been provided to the hypogeic complex, another scientific partnership is nowongoingwith Dimitrios Vandarakis of the Geography Department of the Harokopio University of Athens, that is aimed at a better understanding of the geological and the hydrogeological conditions of the study area, whose first results and preliminar considerations are exposed in Paragraph 2.

They were instantly recognized as the remains of an ancient balaneion, well documented by literary sources at least from the beginning of the 4th century BC, located in the ancient “Serangeion” district. A recent review of the building, highlighted several architectural-functional features of one of the earliest balaneia of the Greek world. It was most certainly built by reusing a network of cisterns of the second half of the 5th century BC. The recent surveys also made it clear that the building, outside of the city walls and close to the Asklepieion, although topographically close to some shrines in the neighborhood, was not necessarily related to religious practices.
