The closure of digital gaps is one of the seven pillars of the Europe 2020 Strategy, which aims t... more The closure of digital gaps is one of the seven pillars of the Europe 2020 Strategy, which aims to lead to «a smart, sustainable and inclusive growth for European Economy. The analysis proposed in this essay investigates the Matthew effect in the context of a social context already heavily affected by the financial crisis. More precisely, we talk about the «absolute Matthew effect» when the rich get richer while the poor get poorer, to the extent that over time the poor are doomed to failure and social exclusion. The «relative Matthew effect», on the other hand, is present when both the rich and the poor are getting richer, but the rich do so at such a higher rate that the gap with the poor keeps widening. One of the possible form of the effect may prevail according to the social context, the historical period, and the geographic area. In the case of ICTs, following the progressive diffusion of technologies, we are witnessing the outcomes of the relative Matthew effect. The hypothesis guiding this work, therefore, is that are witnessing a widening of the existing gaps, with the “poor” suffering a more pronounced process of exclusion from the network society in spite of the generalized increase in ICTs diffusion. That phenomenon can be analyzed both at a micro level, focusing on the individuals, and at a macro level, focusing on the digital divide between countries. We adopt a diachronic macro perspective, comparing the changes in levels of digital exclusion between the different member states of the European Union (EU) starting from 2007, the year preceding the beginning of the economic crisis, until 2014. The chapter is organized as follows: in section 2 the relevant research literature is discussed. In section 3 some methodological issues are presented. In section 4 the main results are summarized. Finally, conclusions and new lines of research are proposed

Methodology: A model with four dimensions of CH experience is proposed and empirically tested using structural equation modeling with data on 300 visitors to three heritage sites in Rome (Italy), which exhibit a high level of technology integration. Results: Technology enables learning processes in the cultural heritage visit experience. The Social Sciences and, specifically, the sociological research, have progressively assumed the ... more The Social Sciences and, specifically, the sociological research, have progressively assumed the gender factor as one of the strategic keys to understand contemporary phenomena. In fact, as a variable for socio-statistical analysis or as a characterizing trait of individual identity, it is a decisive factor in the interpretation of the deep social transformations, and it inspires the self-reflection of the sociologists about the analytical tools of their discipline. The contribution proposes, through a lexicometric approach, an analysis of the articles published in the last two decades by the oldest journal of Sociology, published by Routledge. The main aim is to highlight the different ways in which gender issues are declined in the international sociological researches presented in the repertoire of the International Review of Sociology and to outline, both on the lexical level and on the topic level, the changes occurred over time.

The connections and interactions that (co) produce information are studied with a holistic perspective of social sustainability as a development driver of business model innovation.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory qualitative multiple analysis study was conducted in two consecutive phases. Data from 23 semi-structured individual interviews were collected, followed by a netnographic analysis of the Facebook virtual community.FindingsThe results show that the decision-making process does not develop following the traditional sequence, as social networks modify the wellness meaning creation process and reduce risk perception. Trust is an essential element for effective social cohesion and a correct expression of the princ... more Trust is an essential element for effective social cohesion and a correct expression of the principles of representative democracy. In many countries of the Western world, we are witnessing the advance of anti-establishment political movements and a steady decline of trust in institutions. Crisis, perception of crisis, climate of opinion around it have an impact on political attitudes and diversified feelings (interest, trust, resentment), on political participation and on voting. Social analysts are called to deepen the reasons for the variability of these phenomena according to socio-cultural contexts and individual characteristics. The main aim of this paper is to analyse: 1) if and how much the spread of trust in institutions is different among the EU citizens and 2) what are the determinants of trust, deepening the intensity and the direction of the relationships with subjective and objective indicators. Our purpose is to outline the differences among the EU countries regarding trust in national and international institutions, simultaneously considering macro (country) and micro (individual) level of analysis by using a multilevel approach. The empirical analysis is based on the data collected by European Social Survey (ESS-Round 8) in 2016 (microdata) and on some variables (macrodata) taken from other statistical sources (Eurostat, Transparency International). The sample of individuals counts about 37 thousand subjects. Data analysis includes the construction of synthetic indices, using appropriate synthesis methods, and the identification of the determinants of Trust in Institutions, considering both micro and macro level explanatory variables, resorting to Multilevel Regression.

For this reason, the environmental social sciences, in recent years, are treating the interrelationships between population and environment. In Italy, an informative contribution comes from both Istat traditional Multipurpose Survey "Aspects of daily life" and Istat more recent Survey on Energy Consumption of Households. The aim of the paper is to analyse the determinants of pro-environmental behaviours of Italian citizens, with particular attention to those finalized to reduce the damage on the environment, as well as those directed to encourage energy efficiency, by deepening the direction of the relationships with socio-demograpic and other relevant characteristics, proposing easily replicable over time measures and using a multivariate data analysis approach.

Il volume raccoglie e discute le interpretazioni dei principali risultati di una ricerca sociolog... more Il volume raccoglie e discute le interpretazioni dei principali risultati di una ricerca sociologica – a cui hanno partecipato, nella fase del lockdown, quasi quindicimila persone – su come l’emergenza Covid-19 abbia trasformato gli stili di vita, le relazioni sociali e le aspettative degli italiani. La pandemia ha plasticamente reso evidente come l’origine e la produzione dei rischi, a differenza che nel passato, non sono imputabili a cause esterne, ma rimangono interne alla società stessa; e che gli stati di emergenza sono ormai la norma piuttosto che l’eccezione. La comparsa “regolare” di malattie a tendenza epidemica – dalla Sars, all’influenza aviaria, alle febbri emorragiche come l’Ebola – così come la regolarità di incidenti da sostanze chimiche tossiche, fino ai disastri ambientali e ai cambiamenti climatici, rimettono al centro dello spazio e del dibattito pubblico la riflessione sociologica sulle conseguenze inaspettate dell’azione, soprattutto quella prodotta da attori collettivi come le aziende multinazionali. La moltiplicazione industriale dei rischi costruiti, se da un lato mette in questione l’idea stessa che i rischi si possano controllare attraverso procedure tecnico-scientifiche, dall’altro indebolisce le nozioni tipicamente moderne di previsione e di sapere esperto. Nella società catastrofica, di cui l’emergenza Covid-19 rappresenta una forma simbolica, l’imprevisto torna a occupare il centro della scena pubblica, contribuendo a una ridefinizione sia dell’expertise, sia della decisione politica. Nello spazio globale sospeso, creato dalla pandemia, sia la società che la socialità escono stravolte e sollevano questioni che interrogano gli scienziati sociali.
