In biblioteca con Marziale: intertestualità e implicazioni metaletterarie nei Versus Isidori* Ria... more In biblioteca con Marziale: intertestualità e implicazioni metaletterarie nei Versus Isidori* Riassunto Attraverso l'analisi intertestuale di alcuni passi significativi, il presente contributo evidenzia come il reimpiego degli epigrammi di Marziale sia funzionale al programma letterario dei Versus Isidori, che, per mezzo di tituli destinati agli scaffali di una biblioteca, mirano a costruire una sorta di canone degli autori cristiani di interesse scolastico.

of Tours’ Liber in gloria martyrum and the Venerable Bede’s Vita Felicis. Paulinus’ narration,
which adapts the hagiographic topoi to an epic structure which is too polished from the rhetoric point of view, undergoes a different treatment in the two paraphrases, according to the two
authors’ different needs: Gregory recovers from the Natalicia the narrative cues that were more
suitable to an hagiographic work programmatically inspired by the rusticitas. On the other hand,
Bede’s attempt proves to be more prone to value and reproduce the model’s rhetoric refinement.

and 21 Hartel, this essay focuses on the use of the gospel story of Lazarus
chosen by the author as the main biblical paradigm to describe the right
utilization of wealth seeking the path to eternal life, and on the role of
rhetorical patterns in creating a coherent and senseful poetical translation of
the christian dogmatic conceptions.

In his hymn dedicated to Saint Cyprian, Ennodius focuses the traditional hagiographical theme con... more In his hymn dedicated to Saint Cyprian, Ennodius focuses the traditional hagiographical theme concerning with the eloquence of Carthaginian bishop and martyr: beyond the religious content and the possible liturgical enjoyment, therefore, the hymn aims at celebrating a "converted" facundia, which is able to put its own virtues and power in service of the needs of Christian faith; so, in regard to its real aim, the hymn could be put in a very prolific relation with the considerations about eloquence and poetry scattered in Ennodius' whole literary production. So in Cyprian rhetorician, bishop and martyr, the poet finds a new possible model, in his constant attempt to conciliate the gift for literature with the obtained ecclesiastical status.

The article concerns itself with the text of Ennod. carm. 343,24 Vogel: the most recent editor co... more The article concerns itself with the text of Ennod. carm. 343,24 Vogel: the most recent editor corrected the nonsensically reading of B (Bruxelles, Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique, 9845-9848) with schemata, whereas other editors, including Sirmond, emended to schemate. But Vogel's reading implicates a negative meaning of the word schema and a consequent devaluation of eloquence, which seems to be really incoherent with the celebration of Cyprian's eloquence conducted by Ennodius in the remaining part of the hymn. Here Sirmond's schemate is defended: the so-rebuilt reading is a direct reference to a martyr's witticism - already discussed by Augustine in serm. 309 - which is attested in the Acta proconsularia sancti Cypriani 32.3.

In verse 439 of Paulinus Nolanus’carm. 31, the epithet iugifluus, employed by the poet to invoke ... more In verse 439 of Paulinus Nolanus’carm. 31, the epithet iugifluus, employed by the poet to invoke Christ, is an hapax legomenon in the whole Latin literature. The adjectiv, you can read in Hartel’s edition CSEL (1894), appears firstly in the editio princeps of 1516 as a result of an emendation ope ingenii suggested by humanist philologist Josse Bade in stead of the very strange verbal form iugifluis usually read in cod. Par. Lat. 2122 and in cod. Bruxell. 10615-10729. After a series of stylistic, rhetorical and lexical observations, the article suggests to replace the Josse Bade’s emendation by the reading iuge fluis of cod. Urb. Lat. 533.

All’interno del carm. 31, una lunga consolatio in distici elegiaci dedicata a una coppia di amici... more All’interno del carm. 31, una lunga consolatio in distici elegiaci dedicata a una coppia di amici per la morte del figlio Celso, Paolino di Nola inserisce una serie di versi nei quali si menzionano alcuni personaggi tradizionalmente presenti nelle descrizioni degli Inferi pagani. Tale rassegna, introdotta al v. 475 dalla preterizione non commenta loquor vatum che le conferisce il consueto carattere polemico di rifiuto della mitologia da parte del letterato cristiano, è costruita però attraverso la sapiente tessitura di materiale lessicale attinto dalle rappresentazioni dell’Oltretomba della poesia di età classica. In particolare, accanto alla forte presenza di risonanze e riusi formali che rinviano a Virgilio e soprattutto al sesto libro dell’Eneide, pare possibile riconoscere un modello nella selezione di figure che compongono il catalogo paoliniano (Cerbero, Caronte, Eumenidi, Tizio, Tantalo, Issione, Sisifo, Danaidi): tale mediazione è rappresentata da Ov. met. 4, 447-463, dove la discesa di Giunone agli Inferi offre l’occasione per una sintetica descrizione dell’Ade che recupera e condensa l’imponente materia virgiliana in un’elegante rassegna di personaggi emblematici.

The episode of Elijah's ascension (2Reg. 2,11) is briefly paraphrased by Paulinus of Nola (carm. ... more The episode of Elijah's ascension (2Reg. 2,11) is briefly paraphrased by Paulinus of Nola (carm. 6,77-78), and earlier by Jucencus (2,545-546; 3,265-267), with the use of formal and lexical structures recalling the epic contexts which describe Phoebus' chariot. In particular, there are strong consonances with the narration of Phaeton's voyage in Ovid's Metamorphoses II. The christian superimposition of Elijah onto the pagan figure of Phaeton can be more clearly understood in the light of the simbolic requalification the latter suffers in some dialogues of Seneca, who provides the subsequent tradition not only with a negative example of haughtiness, but also with a positive aspect, of virtue which leads us to Gods.
