U radu se donose podatci proizašli iz pasija istarskih mučenika, koje su sačuvane u najstarijim rukopisima karolinških kodeksa od 9. stoljeća nadalje. Uvažavajući recentne objave hagiografskih tekstova o istarskim mučenicima (Passio Iusti, Passio Pelagii, Passio Mauri Afri, Passio Germani), stječe se uvid u njihov karakter unutar širega hagiografskog konteksta Akvileje, na temelju čega se nastoji reinterpretirati njihova vrijednost kao povijesnih izvora za poznavanje crkveno-političkih okolnosti te društvenih i kulturnih kretanja u Istri na dvjema kronološkim razinama. Prva kronološka razina je kasnija i odnosi se na vrijeme njihova nastanka u pisanom obliku u karolinško doba, kada se potvrđuju kao sredstvo nadzora Franačke države nad biskupijama u Istri te stječu ključnu ulogu u učvršćivanju crkvenog identiteta grada. Owing to its geographical location, Istria was not directly exposed to the devasta- tion in the fourth and fifth centuries, when it avoided both the civil wars and the migratory movements accompanied by invasions of wandering barbarian tribes. After the victory of Christianity, newly created city elites, with the bishop at the helm, had, since the early fifth century, managed the construction activities in cities, primarily relating to monumental projects, which altered the physical appearance of the cityscape. Local peculiarities are often considered as one of the most import- ant factors both for the process of change and for the endurance of the preexist- ing values in political and religious life. Recent studies, however, suggest that the transformation of post-Roman cities was not exclusively a consequence of intense Christianization. Generally, churches represent one of the historical sources that have be taken into consideration, not only for analysing Christianization, but also for understanding the transformation of urban and rural spaces in their social, economic and cultural context. Churches were not isolated buildings – they usually stood inside the previous Roman structures or in their immediate vicinity and mostly continuedto be in use in the Early Middle Ages. This paper presents the analyses of historical and topographical continuity of ecclesiastical buildings in the countryside of Pola between Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages and tries to draw some conclusions on the basis of already known archaeological data and the results of recent archaeological excavations. After the late Roman Church set up a bishop in each administrative town (civitas) the boundaries of the Episcopal Diocese of Pola became identical to those of the Roman colony.

Čineći mali dio velikog osvajačkog vala kojega su europske sile pokrenule u Africi u posljednjim desetljećima 19. stoljeća, tek ujedinjena Kraljevina Italija započela je s izgradnjom svoje kolonije na obali Crvenog Mora, na prostoru današnje države Eritreje. U radu je dana analiza lokalnog i europskog povijesnog konteksta, navedeni su uzroci talijanskog kolonijalnog širenja, te je iznesen povijesni pregled kronološkim navođenjem važnijih događaja toga razdoblja, što političke, što vojne važnosti. Autor ovaj period talijanskoga kolonijalizma završava događajem kojim je on kulminirao, talijanskim porazom kod Adowe 1896. godine od etiopske vojske, te navodi neposredne i dugoročne posljedice te bitke.

Svakodnevne prijetnje koje su dolazile iz susjednih arapskih država, Egipta, Jordana i Sirije, Izrael je 1967. godine odlučio iskoristiti kao povod za preventivni rat kojim bi spriječio bilo kakvu vrstu ugroze po njegov opstanak. Kako je arapska strana, na čelu s vojno najsnažnijim Egiptom, imala brojčanu nadmoć, bilo je potrebno u potankosti pripremiti takav čin i anulirati arapsku prednost naprednim znanjem i taktikama. Dana 5. lipnja 1967. godine, plan preventivnog napada sproveden je u djelo silovitim zračnim napadom na arapska ratna zrakoplovstva. Zbog nedostatka potpore iz zraka i bolje pripremljenosti izraelskih snaga, arapske su države u šest dana rata izgubile cjelokupni Sinajski poluotok, Zapadnu Obalu i Golansku visoravan. Izrael je sebi stvorio široke tampon-zone, ali i nove probleme koji su ostali do dana današnjeg.

U listopadu 1935. počela je invazija fašističke Italije na jedno od posljednjih područja Afrike koji su izbjegli europski kolonijalizam – Etiopsko Carstvo. Službeno, rat je trajao do svibnja 1936., kada je Etiopija anektirana već postojećim talijanskim kolonijama u Istočnoj Africi, a Kraljevina Italija sebe počinje smatrati Carstvom. Zapadni hrvatski (i slovenski) prostori tada su bili dijelom talijanske regije Julijska krajina, te su mnogi Hrvati (i Slovenci) bili pozvani u talijansku invazijsku vojsku. Među njima je bio Klement Sergo iz mjesta Bregi kraj Opatije, poslan u Talijansku Somaliju kao vozač vojnoga kamiona. On je dezertirao, pobjegao preko somalske granice u Etiopiju nekoliko dana prije početka invazije. Tijekom svoga putovanja do etiopske prijestolnice Addis Abebe, izgleda da je prenio povjerljive vojne podatke etiopskim zapovjednicima. Početkom studenoga 1935., sastao se s etiopskim carem Haile Selassijem, pronađen mu je posao, te tamo dobiva posjete od mnogih svjetskih reportera koji su njegovu priču prenijeli cijelome svijetu. Ostatak njegovoga života, do tragične sudbine – egzekucije nakon osude na talijanskome sudu, saznajemo iz sudskoga spisa koji je vođen u srpnju 1936. godine u Mogadišuu.

The Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I‟s official visit to FPR Yugoslavia in July 1954 was the first visit to the socialist country by a foreign statesman after the Cominform resolution of 1948. The event was turned into a major topic for the public in Yugoslavia through several days of July 1954, especially in Croatia, where the guest Emperor visited several areas of the country. It marked the beginning of Yugoslavia‟s turn towards building relations with countries that were not part of the two existing Cold War blocs, which eventually ended up in the creation of the Non-aligned movement.

L’autore tratta i legami tra l’invasione italiana dell’Etiopia nel 1935 – 1936 e la regione Venezia Giulia attraverso gli articoli pubblicati sull’Istra, foglio zagabrese degli emigranti giuliani di nazionalità croata e slovena nel Regno di Jugoslavia. Nel contributo sono esaminati i riflessi della guerra nella Venezia Giulia e la loro influenza sulla vita quotidiana dei Croati e degli Sloveni di questa regione. Il giornale riportava notizie riguardo la chiamata alle armi per la guerra d’Etiopia, la partenza dei lavoratori alla volta dell’Africa orientale, il diffuso fenomeno delle diserzioni dei soldati di nazionalità croata e slovena dall’esercito italiano e la repressione di stato che per le necessità della censura bellica colpiva le popolazioni slave locali. L’Istra riferiva anche dei casi di morte di soldati sloveni e croati dell’esercito italiano in Africa e pubblicava le rare lettere non censurate dal fronte. Gli scritti antifascisti e antibellici dell’Istra avevano come scopo di omogeneizzare e risvegliare politicamente le coscienze dei propri lettori, gli emigranti nel Regno di Jugoslavia.

The authors, basing their work on archival material, the daily press and the literature published in Italy, describe the origins, history and activities of the two structures for military training in Pula during the Italian administration (1918 to 1943): The Cadet Battalion of the Royal Guard and the Nautical School of the Royal Financial Guard. As a military unit controlled by the Italian Ministry of Finance with the task of carrying out customs and tax laws, the Royal Financial Guard carried out, in these structures, training for financial protection and military action. The Nautical school was the only one on the Italian level, and proved to be a key factor in the emergence of the fleet of the Guard.

This article describes the preparation and execution of mass rallies in Italy’s province of Istria, which had marked the beginning and the end of the Italian invasion of Ethiopia (October 1935 – May 1936). The events were organized throughout Italy, where millions of Italians assembled in public spaces in order to listen to the speeches of Benito Mussolini. On October 2nd 1935, the regime organized a “General Assembly of the Forces of the Regime” during which the beginning of the war had been announced, while on May 5th and May 9th 1936 the victory and proclamation of the Empire was celebrated. Based on the presentation of these events via the writings of the official regime, the regime-affiliated press and confidential documents, the paper discusses the main organizational and ideological features
of the mass rallies, with an emphasis on the manner in which the Fascist authorities prepared them and the way they were presented in the press. Modern historiography regards the Ethiopian War and the assemblies that accompanied it to be the pinnacle of the consensus given by the Italian people to the Fascist regime.
