A 7 year experiment (2008–2014) evaluated cattle grazing intensity (sward height) effects on herb... more A 7 year experiment (2008–2014) evaluated cattle grazing intensity (sward height) effects on herbage mass, forage quality, and greenhouse gas emissions in continuously stocked pastures containing the tropical ‘Marandu’ palisade grass (Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich) Stapf cv. Marandu). The experiment consisted of three sward height treatments (15, 25, and 35 cm) and six replicates. There were four periods each year during the rearing phase. Significant effects were found for herbage mass, proportions of leaf and stem, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, lignin, animal performance, enteric methane (CH4), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from soils. When the canopy height increased from 15 to 35 cm, the herbage mass rose from 5.23 to 9.86 kg t ha−1, leaf percentage decreased, and stem percentage increased. In Experiment 1, intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and the rumen microbial profile were evaluated in two simultaneous 5 × 5 Latin squares, using 10 ruminally cannulated Nellore steers (408.8 ± 38.5 kg of body weight (BW)). In Experiment 2, cattle growth performance was evaluated in 50 young Nellore bulls (279.52 ± 16.3 kg of BW) distributed in a randomized complete block design. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de níveis de inclusão de glicerina bruta (GB), c... more O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de níveis de inclusão de glicerina bruta (GB), contendo 36,20% de glicerol, na dieta de cordeiros em terminação, sobre o consumo, digestibilidade dos componentes da dieta e desempenho produtivo e econômico. Utilizaram-se 35 cordeiros machos não castrados da raça Santa Inês, com peso médio inicial de 20±2,27 kg, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e seis repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de níveis de inclusão da GB na dieta (0, 3, 6, 9 e 12% da matéria seca), em substituição ao milho. Após 10 dias de adaptação, cinco animais foram abatidos para se obter o rendimento de carcaça inicial. Após o período de adaptação, os 30 animais restantes foram alojados em baias individuais. Quando o grupo atingiu o peso médio de 35 kg, os animais foram abatidos. This paper examines inter-generational persistence in child labor by developing a dynamic model a... more This paper examines inter-generational persistence in child labor by developing a dynamic model and exploring its implications empirically in Brazil. We begin by building an overlapping generations model of the household child labor decision. We assume that this decision is made by the head of the household, where parents decide to send their child to work only if by doing so the child's contribution to the present consumption of the family outweighs the future consumption benefit the family would enjoy from keeping the child in school. The main predictions of the model are that children are more likely to work when they come from households with parents who were child laborers, from households with parents who have lower educational attainment and that child labor has adverse effects on children's educational attainment and their adult earnings. Evidence of persistence in child labor is found by examining household survey data from Brazil. We exploit the fact that the survey data includes information on child labor of both parents and children in a household, as well as information on the educational achievement of the grandparents. We find that people who start work at an younger age end up with lower educational outcomes, that those who start work at a younger age end up with lower earnings as adults, and that children are more likely to be child laborers the younger their parents were when they entered the labor force and the lower the educational attainment of the parents.

The first step in Active Shape Model (ASM) based image segmentation and processing is to create a... more The first step in Active Shape Model (ASM) based image segmentation and processing is to create a point distribution model (PDM) during the training phase. Correct point (landmark) correspondences across each of the training shapes must be determined for a successful and effective statistical model building process. Effective and automatic solutions for this problem are needed for the practical use of ASM methods. In this paper, we provide a solution for this problem which consists of: (i) a process of generating a mean shape without requiring landmarks, (ii) a process of automatic landmark selection for the mean shape, and (iii) a process of propagating landmarks on to each training shape for defining landmarks in them. This paper describes the method of generating the mean shape, and the landmark selection and correspondence process. Although the method is generally applicable to spaces of any dimensionality, our first implementation and evaluation has been carried out for 2D shapes. The method is evaluated on 20 MRI foot data sets, the object of interest being the talus bone. The results indicate that, for the same given number of points, better compactness (number of parameters) of the ASM by using our method can be achieved than by using the commonly used equi-spaced point selection method.
The presence of Leishmania amazonensis ecto-nucleoside triphosphate triphosphohydrolase activitie... more The presence of Leishmania amazonensis ecto-nucleoside triphosphate triphosphohydrolase activities was demonstrated using antibodies against different NTPDase members by Western blotting, flow cytometry, and immunoelectron microscopy analysis. Living promastigote cells sequentially hydrolyzed the ATP molecule generating ADP, AMP, and adenosine, indicating that this surface enzyme may play a role in the salvage of purines from the extracellular medium. The L. amazonensis ecto-NTPDase activities were insensitive to Triton X-100, but they were enhanced by divalent cations, such as Mg2+. In addition, the ecto-NTPDase activities decreased with time for 96 h when promastigotes were grown in vitro. On the other hand, these activities increased considerably when measured in living amastigote forms. Furthermore, the treatment with adenosine, a mediator of several relevant biological phenomena, induced a decrease in the reactivity with anti-CD39 antibody, raised against mammalian E-NTPDase, probably because of down regulation in the L. amazonensis ecto-NTPDase expression. Also, adenosine and anti-NTPDase antibodies induced a significant diminishing in the interaction between promastigotes of L. amazonensis and mouse peritoneal macrophages.
