Regarding the objects, an expansion can be observed, overcoming the long-lasting limitation to journalistic mass media. This change is above all due to changes that came along with digital media communication permeating our everyday lives, but also blurring the lines between one-to-one and one-to-many communication. These far-reaching changes also led to an intensified discussion of central concepts like medium and mediality. As current tendencies within the field, multimodality, culturality, and the triad of production – product – reception are discussed.

T... more This article examines the cultural meaning of genre forms through a study of two TV news shows. The main argument (section 1) is that a contextualized and multimodal interpretation of genre forms is crucial to an adequate understanding of the cultural norms and values of the group that produces these genres, as cultural values within a community (be it local, regional, national or translocal) have to be adjusted and negotiated and therefore somehow materialized and communicated. Given that a genre form can always be varied within any given situation, it is the additional meaning of the form that becomes culturally relevant. Cultural imprints of this kind are especially visible in comparative studies. In view of newer conceptualizations of culture as a set of heterogeneous and dynamic semiotic practices, an adequate comparative method is developed (section 2).
The article examines the genre histories of the American “CBS Evening News” and the Swiss “Tagesschau” from the 1960s and 1950s, respectively, until today (section 3). The article offers a meso-level analysis of the shows that examines their genre repertoires, genre frequencies and genre networks, as well as a micro-level analysis of the changing styles of two crucial genres, the Package and the Film Item. An examination of genre styles makes it possible to understand changes in or the stability of entire genre profiles (repertoire, frequency and networks). At the same time, a cultural interpretation of the changing genre profiles can be used to shed light on the journalistic culture of the two shows, including the degree to which they are market oriented and how they stage authenticity (section 4).
