Cet article s’intéresse aux façons par lesquelles certains types d’applications smartphone médiatisent la navigation urbaine de leurs utilisateurs dans la ville de New-York. L’article commence par démontrer l’importance que détiennent ces logiciels lorsqu’il s’agit de gérer l’organisation spatio-temporelle de ses activités quotidiennes. Partant de ces prémices, la réflexion se concentre spécifiquement sur le fonctionnement de logiciels « intelligents », adaptant leur contenu en fonction de leur utilisateur, de ses routines particulières et de son contexte d’utilisation (heure, emplacement etc.). A partir d’entretiens semi-directifs réalisés à New-York auprès d’utilisateurs de Foursquare, Google Now et Mynd, l’analyse proposée aborde la progressive personnalisation des informations sur lesquelles repose en partie la navigation des utilisateurs dans l’espace urbain. Démontrant, d’une part, que ces logiciels rendent l’espace urbain plus familier pour leurs utilisateurs, l’article cherche également à problématiser ce que signifie, pour ces acteurs, le fait qu’un logiciel les profile et les « connaisse » à ce point. Deux questions majeures sont alors abordées : celle des risques que court l’utilisateur du point de vue de l’exposition de certaines de ses informations personnelles (privacy) ; et celle des conséquences du profilage en terme de tri social et d’accès à l’information spatiale.

Ce mémoire de Master part d'un projet de reforestation et d'agroforesterie en Bolivie tropicale pour s'intéresser à des questions de droits fonciers et de construction de frontières dans un contexte fortement marqué par des programmes de colonisation agraire. Il analyse la manière dont un projet de développement est réapproprié au niveau de sa région d'intervention, et comment il fournit à certains acteurs locaux de nouveaux outils pour consolider leur capacité à acquérir un droit d'existence et de gestion sur un territoire particulier. En se concentrant sur les stratégies développées par certains entrepreneurs de la frontière pour stabiliser un ensemble de population à l'intérieur d'un espace qu'ils souhaitent s'approprier, ce travail discute les enjeux juridiques, politiques, sociaux, mais aussi économiques et psychologiques sous-jacents à la mobilisation d’individus et à la construction de groupes. Il rend également attentif à l’incessant travail de négociation, d'adaptation et de ré-élaboration que nécessite la mise-en-place d'un projet de développement, montrant ainsi qu’un projet peut facilement se transformer en plusieurs projets servant des intérêts différents de ses objectifs initiaux.

Based on the observation that jeans, while originally a workers’ uniform, have become acceptable in most social situations, we formulated the diachronic hypothesis that as jeans became ubiquitous, they contributed to making invisible – or possibly obsolete – the category of the “bourgeoisie”, which was replaced by the much vaguer and less constraining category of the “middle class”.

We develop our argument by focusing first on the modes of categorization generally applied to jeans in order to understand how people invest them with meaning and use them to distinguish themselves in social settings. Second, we analyse the criteria that contribute to creating “quality” and, accordingly, that perform the transformation of a simple pair of pants into a luxury item. Third, we investigate how an originally neutral pair of jeans is given “personality”.

Our research results are close, but not identical, to our original research question. They tend to show that while jeans today are worn in many relatively formal situations where people want to look chic or elegant, the fact that they can adapt to these situations depends not so much on jeans’ intrinsic qualities as on the way they are worn in association with other clothes and accessories, creating a general “look” that is appropriate to the context. Jeans in themselves are regarded a “staple”, as highly neutral clothing for which customization is necessary in order to signify specific styles or social groups. In this sense, jeans can be viewed as “subjectivisors”, objects that activate processes of self-positioning, self-determination and self-expression, a “second-skin” in the words of our interviewees.

Since the 1970s, quotas have continually been used to control immigration to Switzerland. But the categories of foreigners subject to this quota system have changed over time, and the system itself has also undergone numerous modifications. Given that immigration quotas may gain more prominence in Switzerland in the coming years, it is worth taking a closer look at how this specific aspect of immigration policy is currently implemented.

This open access book analyses the strategies of migration intermediaries from the public and private sectors in Switzerland to select, attract, and retain highly skilled migrants who represent value to them. It reveals how state and economic actors define “wanted immigrants” and provide them with privileged access to the Swiss territory and labour market. The analysis draws on an ethnographic study conducted in the French-speaking Lake Geneva area and the German-speaking northwestern region of Switzerland between 2014 and 2018. It shows how institutional actors influence which resources are available to different groups of newcomers by defining and dividing migrants according to constructed social categories that correlate with specific status and privileges. This research thus shifts the focus from an approach that takes the category of highly skilled migrant for granted to one that regards context as crucial for structuring migrants’ characteristics, trajectories, and experiences. Beyond consideration of professional qualifications, the ways decision-makers perceive candidates and shape their resource environments are crucial for constructing them as skilled or unskilled, wanted or unwanted, welcome or unwelcome.

Les nouvelles technologies ne transforment pas seulement notre rapport au travail. Elles changent aussi notre rapport à la mobilité en rendant possible une gestion toujours plus flexible du personnel. C’est ce que démontre ce chapitre en prenant pour exemple l’une des plus grandes entreprises de conseil au monde. Il analyse la manière dont cette entreprise a su créer un système de placement de ses employés extrêmement flexible qui lui permet de répondre sur mesure aux demandes de ses clients. Si cette firme offre de bons salaires et une expérience de travail valorisante, elle impose aussi une mobilité constante et beaucoup d’incertitude. Ainsi, elle s’inscrit dans la continuité d’un phénomène déjà relevé par de nombreux auteurs, à savoir un rapport au travail plus flexible, organisé autour de projets à court terme, qui brouille les frontières entre vie privée et vie professionnelle.

The mobility of the 'highly skilled' has become widely researched but only a few researchers have approached this category of migrants from a critical perspective. This article argues that understanding how 'highly skilled migrants' are constructed necessitates considering the conditions in which migration takes place as well as the perceptions and practices associated with these conditions. It uses the concept of 'migration channels' to investigate the enabling and disabling factors associated with different migration situations. The analysis draws on biographic interviews with highly educated migrants in Switzerland, and supplements these with expert interviews and ethnographic observations of people working in institutions that support, guide, or control migrants' access to the labour market. The article shows that categories of migrants are artificial and often do not coincide with lived realities. Migrants actively develop strategies to achieve their personal aspirations, but they also depend on the opportunities available in their environment. The concept of 'migration channels' enables us to capture this interplay between structures and agency by showing how different actors shape the opportunities and constraints faced by different groups of migrants, and how migrants actively deal with them. This concept thus fosters a critical yet empathic understanding of migration experiences. In recent academic literature, transnational migrant entrepreneurs tend to be represented as active agents capable of mobilising resources situated in different countries to develop new businesses. Mobility, however, is an unequally distributed resource, and restrictive migration regimes limit the possibilities of individuals to become entrepreneurs. This article focuses on the role of informal practices in the business strategies of migrants who develop their activities across national borders. Based on ethnographic research in Barcelona, Spain, it argues that, in a context of unequal access to formal resources, resorting to informality is crucial for many entrepreneurs as it enables them to expand their options for social mobility and achieve personal goals that would otherwise remain unreachable. At the same time, the article proposes a critical perspective on the notions of informality and entrepreneurship. It highlights that these concepts rely on context-dependent norms set by certain social groups and challenged by others, which influence who can become an entrepreneur in specific environments. While certain categories of migrants are favorably positioned with regard to these norms, others are hindered by them and therefore are forced to engage in alternative entrepreneurial activities. How this is achieved, and the costs involved depend on the entrepreneur's capacity to mobilize economic, cultural, social, and moral resources as well as on the perception of their practices as more or less legitimate or socially acceptable.

Bien que la sélection des étrangers par l'appareil administratif des États joue un rôle crucial pour la structuration des phénomènes migratoires actuels, il existe à ce jour peu d'études qui analysent empiriquement la manière dont de telles procédures fonctionnent et sont vécues lorsqu'elles s'appliquent à des catégories d'étrangers perçus comme « désirables ». La présente recherche tente de répondre à ce manque en proposant une étude de cas ethnographique qui met en lumière l'expérience et l'agentivité des différents acteurs impliqués dans la procédure de sélection des ressortissants non-européens hautement qualifiés cherchant à venir travailler en Suisse. L'analyse montre que l'accès à la mobilité repose sur un ensemble d'interactions complexes qui impliquent non seulement les candidats à l'immigration et les employés d'État, mais également des réseaux d'institutions non-étatiques pour lesquels la mobilité de travailleurs qualifiés représente une source de profit. Ces acteurs facilitent l'accès aux permis de séjour et de travail pour les étrangers dont ils espèrent tirer une plus-value économique. Cependant, ils peuvent également les contraindre à des situations de dépendances et d'immobilité dans la mesure où des systèmes d'admission restrictifs, en Suisse et ailleurs, rendent les étrangers concernés tributaires de leur soutien administratif.
