The seismic design criteria provided by current EC8 aim at assuring ductile global plastic mechanism occur, namely restraining the plastic deformation into the diagonals, while the remaining structural members and connections should elastically behave. However, several studies, show that the design process compliant to Eurocode 8 is affected by several criticisms, it entails several efforts and often leads to massive, uneconomical systems solution exhibiting poor seismic performance. EN1998-1 recommends estimating the lateral resistance of X-CBFs by performing structural analysis on a tension-only (T-O) diagonal scheme in which solely the tension braces resist the lateral loadings, while the contribution given by the compression diagonals is neglected. As highlighted by the comments given by European designers coming from the survey promoted by CEN TC 250/SC8 for the systematic review of EC8, this type of model can induce misleading interpretation of the structural behavior and relevant modelling of X-CBFs, leading to uneconomical and oversized systems characterized by heavy structural solutions and poor plastic engagement. The research presented in this paper is addressed to critically discuss and revise the detailing rules codified within the current EN 1998-1 for X-CBF, to simplify the design process and to improve the seismic behavior. Whit this aim, an extent set of nonlinear dynamic analyses has been performed on a set ow low, medium, and high-rise 2D frames extracted from residential steel buildings to assess the effectiveness of currently codified requirements and to validate the beneficial effects of the proposed revision.

In this article the effectiveness of seismic design criteria on the robustness of beam-to-column joints is investigated. The numerical investigation was carried out on a set of European beam-to-column assemblies equipped with extended stiffened end-plate connections. The beams in the analyzed models were axially-restrained and subjected to large rotational demands, characteristic of the column loss scenario. The results show that the joints designed in accordance with seismic requirements have an adequate performance, provided that the axial resistance of half of the connection is larger than the plastic resistance of the beam.

Restoration Through a Traditional Intervention of a Historic Unreinforced Masonry Building “Palazzo Scarpa” in Naples

Especially challenging was the complete substitution of the two storeys of two existing longitudinal walls, each long 20m, for a total of 30 piers, by leaving in place the three upper storeys due to need of not evacuate the 36 families living in the building. The diagnosis phase demonstrated an unacceptable low value of the safety factor of the structure under gravity loads. Vertical cracking in several walls, due to compression stresses, confirmed this worrying safety condition of the masonry structure. The paper demonstrates the feasibility (technical and economical) of very traditional intervention, completely based on real mechanical insertions: the substitution walls and the mechanical steel ties. In 2007, the interventions illustrated in this study won the first prize of Sisto Mastrodicasa award on restoration and strengthening of buildings.

Influence of the P-Delta Effect on the Design of Steel Moment Resisting Frame in Seismic Areas

On the contrary, the North American codes (e.g. ASCE7) give different rules for P-Delta effects. The current draft version of the amended EN1998-1-1 introduces a different methodology to account for the structural lateral displacements. In this paper static non-linear analyses were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the new EC8 provisions with respect to the former version of EC8 and the current ASCE7. The results show that the structures designed according to the latest draft version of the EN1998-1-1 and those compliant with the North American code exhibit similar behavior.

The present work is focused on local assessment and retrofit the beam-to-column joints of an existing non-conforming steel building. Therefore, the monotonic and cyclic behaviors of internal beamto-column joints are investigated by means of finite element analyses (FEAs). The main peculiarities of these joints are the continuity of beams and hollow square columns interrupted at each level and connected both by bolts and fillet welds to the tapered flanges of the beams. Onsite surveys allowed fully characterizing the geometry of the joints. The joint assemblies were sub-structured from the moment resisting frames and analyzed against both the vertical loads and seismic actions. The results showed that these types of joints exhibit very poor seismic behavior, concentering most of the damage within the welds. Therefore, different local strengthening interventions were designed and numerically checked. The comparison between the response of the unreinforced and the various strengthening joints is described, and the best solutions in terms of both cyclic behavior and technological feasibility are subsequently identified.

Seismic Performance of Multistorey Frames with Bolted Extended End-Plate Joints: The Influence of Joint Modelling Assumptions
The strength and the stiffness of bolted extended end plate beam-to-column joints generally affec... more The strength and the stiffness of bolted extended end plate beam-to-column joints generally affect the overall seismic response of steel multi-storey frames. Therefore, it is necessary to account for the joint mechanical behaviour in numerical analyses devoted to assess the seismic performance. In this paper some modelling assumptions are proposed and validated against experimental results to develop refined models accounting for the moment-rotation response of bolted end-plate moment resisting joints. To this aim, different configurations of bolted endplate connections have been modelled by varying both stiffness and strength properties. In order to highlight the accuracy of the proposed strategy, the numerical results obtained by refined modelling hypotheses have been compared with those given by using simplified assumptions.
