The internal migration routes have been constant in Mozambique, before, during and after the colo... more The internal migration routes have been constant in Mozambique, before, during and after the colonial period, still today. Rural social groups were directed to urban areas in particular to Lourenço Marques where black population was forced to occupy exclusively the suburban area known as "cidade de caniço" as opposed to the "cidade de cimento”, the white’s area. Therefore groups from different regional backgrounds had to re-organize, adapt and reinvent themselves alternating urban practices with those traditional. This division is still present today and is characterized by lifestyles in contrasts and socio-economic differences.
This paper discusses two migratory paths: the first one concerns the social group copi from Inhambane province (south of the country), relocated in Xipamanine and Unidade 7 neighborhoods; the second one is related to the social group makhuwa (north of the country) whose settlement occurred mainly in the Mafalala neighborhood. We discuss part of the results of two different multi-situated fieldwork experiences - in Ethnomusicology and in Heritage Studies - conducted with the ethnographic method what is the relationship between individuals and their living places and the sense of “belonging” or “exclusion” working on it.
The performative practice of timbila of chopi people and the heritagization processes of the self-representative practices of the makhuwa culture, in the city allow us to observe how can be declinated, constructed and imagined the belonging to a geographic and cultural space, according to the actors involved and participative strategies used.

The contribution focuses on two cases of studies obtained during ethnographic fieldwork research ... more The contribution focuses on two cases of studies obtained during ethnographic fieldwork research in Mozambique: Ilha de Moçambique and Mafalala, a suburban neighbourhood of Maputo. The polarized interpretation of the colonial world has influenced everyday life and directs the use of urban spaces, creating inequalities and exclusions, even in the process of valorization and protection of National Cultural Heritage. Mafalala would seem able to rethink the concept of frontier and heritage itself, moving away from the Western vision through an act of re-mapping of memory spaces.

Il presente lavoro di tesi è il risultato di un progetto dottorale che ha come tema principale la... more Il presente lavoro di tesi è il risultato di un progetto dottorale che ha come tema principale la memoria e il patrimonio culturale mozambicano. Si inserisce nel filone degli studi antropologici sul patrimonio culturale e segue una prospettiva critico-partecipativa secondo cui il ricercatore assume una postura in cui predilige un’osservazione olistica dei contesti e partecipa ai processi in cui ‘cose’ vengono trasformate in ‘patrimonio’. ‘Tra le case di macuti e quelle di madeira & zinco’, indica il percorso riflessivo che ha seguito l’indagine, incentrata su Ilha de Moçambique e Mafalala, bairro suburbano della città di Maputo, le cui storie - se intrecciate - mettono in piedi un continuum narrativo tra il nord e il sud del paese tracciato dalle pratiche autorappresentative delle comunità makhuwa migranti. La tesi si costruisce intorno ai due casi studio e prova a raccogliere le percezioni locali degli elementi assurti a patrimonio culturale. Ne risulta un’interpretazione polarizzata del mondo di stampo coloniale, che costantemente influenza la quotidianità e orienta l’uso degli spazi urbani. Da questa lettura, Mafalala sembrerebbe avere la capacità di ripensare il concetto di frontiera e di patrimonio stesso, allontanandosi dalla visione occidentale attraverso un atto di ri-cartografizzazione in cui viene dato maggior peso agli spazi densi - marginali.
