19th century by the Me... more Fianarantsoa means “Good education” in Malagasy. It was built in the early 19th century by the Merina as the administrative capital for the newly conquered Betsileo kingdoms. The Fianarantsoa Old City occupies a dramatic hilltop with a palace used by the Merina royal Governor, that is no longer there. The colonial city, located on the neighbouring hill of Tsianolondroa, housed almost the city’s major infrastructures: streets and main avenues, hospital, administrative buildings, etc., built between 1896 and 1960. The Old City is the only place in Madagascar where nineteenth-century buildings form a coherent architectural ensemble. Although the conditions of some edifices appear dire, in recent years private and public institutions have showed interest in protecting the old city’s architectural heritage by projects requiring renovation to be consistent with traditional methods.

Dans cette contribution, je propose un choix de lettres inédites (datées de 1929 à 1933), écrites... more Dans cette contribution, je propose un choix de lettres inédites (datées de 1929 à 1933), écrites par Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo à Lionello Fiumi. Les lettres sont conservées au Centre d'Études Internationale Lionello Fiumi de la Bibliothèque municipale de Vérone. Je ferai d'abord quelques remarques sur la découverte de ce corpus. Cela permettra de présenter ensuite le contenu qui nous révèle la création d'un réseau des relations, bien limité dans le temps, mais témoignant d'une grande harmonie entre les deux hommes de lettres. En particulier, les lettres parlent de la vie personnelle de Rabearivelo, de ses espoirs et ses déceptions.

Abbott wrote to the curator of the Smithsonian Institution Otis Mason stating that he had shipped artefacts for his department as well as other objects from Madagascar. In January 1895, Dr Abbott had returned to Madagascar, after his January 1890 journey to the Red Island, to fight alongside the Malagasy in their war against the French. Abbott accomplished the expedition of 1895 during an exceptionally difficult period for the Kingdom of Madagascar, a period that ushered in the dramatic end of Merina sovereignty. The article studies such period through the unpublished correspondence of the American naturalist and proposes a reconstruction of his activity as collector in Madagascar.

Rainilairivony asked Shufeldt to deliver for letters to the American authorities. Two were from the Queen Ranavalona III and two from the P.M. The Malagasy government asked Washington to mediate in the franco-Malagasy war. Washington reply was negative. Shufeldt took several photos of his mission to Madagascar and some are important because he travelled from Antananarivo to the west, a region labelled as dreaded land.
