I am currently working on a participatory- research with children and other stakeholders to understand childhood poverty, and to complement the Individual Deprivation Measure (IDM), which both are led by Professor Sharon Bessell at the Australian National University. I am also assisting Associate Professor John McCarthy on project Households vulnerability, food security and social protection in Indonesia, which is funded by the Australian Research Council as a discovery grant. Naimah is now working on early stage research on Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in rural developments in Southeast Asian context at the ANU and at the Western Sydney University.

Democracy in Indonesia: From Stagnation to Regression? raises questions on the meanings and conse... more Democracy in Indonesia: From Stagnation to Regression? raises questions on the meanings and consequences of the decline of democratic institutions in Indonesia. The book provides a range of cases and analyses that build well-sounded arguments at the macro, meso, and micro levels. With its focus on Indonesia, this book contributes to the debates around a global trend of democratic decline and populist approaches to governmentality. This book is divided into five chapters based on its umbrella topics, including, first, historical and comparative perspectives that highlight the democratic status (i.e. through the liberal democracy index) of Indonesia amongst Southeast Asian countries and globally (Allen Hicken), as well as temporal comparative study in explaining the relative success of Indonesia's democratic transition in 1998 (Dan Slater). The second chapter discusses polarization and populism. Eve Warburton argues that the rise of populism in Indonesia indicates latent ideological divisions that have turned into political conflicts, followed by Nava Nuraniyah highlighting the roles of Indonesian Islamist and pluralist fractions in contributing to a downwards-spiralling to authoritarian pluralism. Liam Gammon adds the element of electoral rules and institutional frameworks' roles in reducing the force of populism in Indonesia, which he also argues might be weakening Indonesian democracy from the grassroots upwards (i.e. the emergence of populist grassroots movements). Lastly, rather different from other authors who emphasize identities and ideological differences, Abdil Mughis Mudhoffir argues that the rise of populism is a symptom of undemocratic institutions in redistributing resources. Mudhoffir views that widening socioeconomic inequality has contributed to the more polarized society in Indonesia. The third chapter discusses societal-level popular support for democracy, which highlights acceptance of election results by electoral losers as an indicator of democratic deconsolidation (Burhanuddin Muhtadi), and people's conception of multidimensional democracy in the Indonesian context (Diego Fosatti and Ferran Martinez i Coma). The fourth chapter discusses Indonesia's democratic institutions by examining the roles of political parties as vehicles of the peoples' aspirations, the mass media, redistribution policies among regions, as well as state surveillance regulation and practices. Water is essential to human and living beings both for its physical and non-physical forms that e... more Water is essential to human and living beings both for its physical and non-physical forms that enable humans to function. This book broadens discussions about water, from its physical dimensions and its use to beyond-physical ontological forms of water. The authors show that water is situated as a crucial part of social, cultural, and spiritual beings. Departing from the ontological pluralism of water, water has become more contested, not only as a commodity that is inseparable from the well-functioning of human lives but also as part of the living ecosystem. This book, not only deepens such frames of analysis but also advances recent debates around water bodies/ rivers/ oceans as having a right in and of itself as part of the multispecies living being in a shared space of planet Earth. Further, this book contributes to re-centering water as a fundamental environmental justice issue. This book contributes to the debates around the recognition aspects of justice, which makes claims for acknowledgement of different sets of values and cultural practices underlying valuation of water, which are often dominated by materialistic values. As Linton suggests on page 63 'No amount of citizen participation, social learning or stakeholder involvement in decision making process is likely to resolve the problem of different waters realised through different practices… without recognition of different political ontologies." This book provides a structured means for not only responding to the political and social problems in realising the right to water, but also its meta-political representation (formation of its very framings) (Fraser, 2009), of which we are allowed to claim for justice. Water Politics: Governance, Justice and the Rights to Water asks "how far have we made progress in realising [the] right to water? And under what frames are these policies and practices operating?". This book discusses a broad range of topics from the politics of water and water governance, human rights to water, and engages with water through the capabilities framework, addressing key issues around the water-food security nexus, water justice, and the intersectionality of water in varied contexts of the Global South and Global North, bridging urban and rural areas. The book highlights the evolving political ontologies of and about water across temporal, spatial, and governing scales, and how interpretations of such plural conceptions have been realised so far. The editors compiled various papers highlighting the progress that has been made in delivering and claiming rights to water across geographical-spatial contexts in the past three decades. The authors adopt a critical geography approach to water, and each of the fourteen articles present deep observations and critical analysis of empirical cases.
