moreThe survey was conducted between March and May, 2011 and a total of 104 respondents answered the questionnaire. The results generated from the survey are summarized below:
• About 95% of Nigerians know what Social Media is. This shows a high level of awareness and understanding of what a social media is amongst Nigerian adult population 18+.
• The survey reveals that Facebook is the most popular social media sites being used by Nigerians to communicate and for other purposes accounting for about 95.2% usage amongst Nigerian adults 18 years and above.
• Facebook is the most favourite amongst all the Social Media applications being used above by respondents accounting for about 81% amongst Nigerian adults 18 years and above
• The survey shows that 45% of Nigerian adults spend between 1-3 hours daily, on Facebook, which is the most popular amongst the social media applications used by Nigerian adults, while, about 18% spend between 5-7 hours on Facebook.
• About 74% of Nigerians said they use social media for Networking and 72% said they use it for Communication purposes. Another 43% said they use social media for Research/Insights purpose, while 34% said they use it for Business prospects.
• The use of social media applications by Nigerian adults have had great influence on their Social life, according to 86% of the respondents, while about 73% said it has influenced their Educational pursuit.
• The survey reveals that, 58% of Nigerian adults make purchase decision based on Television adverts, about 46% said they make purchase decisions based on Newspaper adverts, while 43% uses information from online advertising (banner) to make purchase decisions.
• The demographic composition of social media users amongst Nigeria adult shows that about 37% of them fall within the 26-33 years age group., while 52% of them are Males and 48% are Females.
