Artykuł przybliża strukturę retoryczną utworu, jak też sytuację społeczną Warszawy przełomu XVI i XVII w.: opisuje nocne obyczaje warszawieków i przybyszów, jak teżdziałanie miejsckich straży. W utworze znajdujemy kwerelę Snu oraz pochwałę króla Zygmunta III Wazy, któy przywraca porządek w mieście.
The article aims to show the conflict that arises between the expectations of people who crave sleep and those who want to enjoy night entertainment. The activities of night guards that operated in cities serve to reconcile these interests. Stanisław Grochowski outlines such a situation in the poem The Complaint of Night Sleep. The article presents the rhetorical structure of the work, as well as the social situation of Warsaw at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries: it describes the night customs of Varsovians and newcomers, as well as the activities of the city guards. The work includes a querel of Sleep and a praise of King Sigismund III Vasa, who restores order to the city.

Elements creating convention are following: description of symptoms, treatment attempts, medics’ hopelessness, mass death of population, consequences of social stratification during the plague, an increase of religious worship or escape into hedonistic use of life, loosening moral principles, population migrations, families’ fall, lack of respect for bodies and mass burials. Zeszyt 11 jest kolejnym opublikowanym w Wydawnictwie Instytutu Badań Literackich Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Kilka lat doświadczeń redagowania czasopisma skłania nas do wniosku, że łamów "Meluzyny" nie możemy oddawać wyłącznie młodym badaczom. Chcemy, podkreślamy to z przekonaniem, by "Meluzyna" stwarzała okazję do spotkań przedstawicielom nauki reprezentującym wiele ośrodków, kształtowanym w wielu środowiskach, adeptom wiedzy wyrastającym w odmiennych szkołach naukowych, rozwijających się pod opieką własnych mistrzów. Śmierć-nieunikniony kres ludzkiej egzystencji-jednakowo przeraża i fascynuje literatów oraz twórc... more Śmierć-nieunikniony kres ludzkiej egzystencji-jednakowo przeraża i fascynuje literatów oraz twórców kultury. Próbują ją poznać, zbadać, oswoić, opisać, niektórzy może nawet zaprzyjaźnić się. Jedni postrzegają śmierć poprzez doświadczenia, przekazy, objawienie religijne, inni próbują zmierzyć się z nią sami. Rezultatem tych różnorodnych u swej genezy, ale też w swym przebiegu poszukiwań są dzieła literackie oraz inne wszelkiego rodzaju artefakty. Śmierć, w rzeczywistości nieuchwytna w swej istocie, jawi się w średniowieczu jako szkielet bądź rozkładające się zwłoki. Budząc przerażenie i szacunek zaprasza ludzi różnych stanów do swego tańca-danse macabre-tańca Śmierci. Straszy karą grzeszników, obiecuje rozkosze niebiańskie sprawiedliwym. Jest wpisana w porządek religijny. Twórcy renesansowi i barokowi zmagali się z tematyką śmierci w licznych utworach funeralnych świeckich i religijnych. Reprezentowały one przykładowo gatunki, takie jak: epicedia, treny, epitafia, kazania pogrzebowe i wygłaszane w rocznicę śmierci. Kreślono w nich przejmujące portrety zmarłych, dokonywano ostatecznych rozrachunków, przybliżano biografie, które starano się tak konstruować, by stały się modelowymi wizerunkami postaw godnych naśladowania. W barokowej epice romansowej napotykamy już piersze opisy śmierci samobójczej (Kupidyna w Nadobnej Paskwalinie Samuela Twardowskiego i nieudaną próbę w Sylorecie Wacława Potockiego podjętą przez Arsynę, która pragnęła uniknąć wykonania na niej wyroku śmierci), jak też zgonów licznych bohaterów męskich. Polskie oświecenie przeżywa śmierć, sięgając często po kostium antyczny (Orfeusz i Eurydyka), poznając zaświaty dzięki rozmowom zmarłych i wędrówkom żywych. Oświeceniowe pragnienie bliższego poznania tego, co po drugiej stronie zdaje się wyrastać z właściwej wcześniejszym cyklom funeralnym konsolacji, w której twórcy staropolscy udzielali głosu zmarłym, by ci pocieszyli pozostałych przy życiu, zapewniając, że po drugiej stronie jest im dobrze, doznają szczęścia, zasłużywszy na nie dzięki cnotliwemu życiu. W literaturze po przełomie romantycznym, zwłaszcza XX-wiecznej, część twórców, jak i bohaterów, obcuje ze śmiercią, rezygnując z perspektywy religijnej. Niektórzy poszukują jej świadomie, przeprowadzają eksperymenty, pragną ustalić, gdzie jest granica między życiem a śmiercią, niejednokrotnie ją celowo lub przypadkowo przekraczają, pozostając przy życiu bądź znikając na zawsze po drugiej stronie.

For the first part of the work, the basis for the edition must be the edition of the first part from 1660, published under the author’s control. For the second to the fourth part, the Kalisz edition was corrected by Alojzy Kowalkowski’s notes. The edition of Kalisz, as it was censored by the Jesuits from Kalisz for the needs of education in the colleges of the order, cannot constitute the basis for a new edition on its own. We only have the notes of Alojzy Kowalkowski, who compiled the manuscript with the Kalisz edition before World War II. As the individual copies of the Kalisz edition differ, relations between them should be established. Poradowski laments and praises for deceased. Second part of the Wołoska Battle is a history of a struggle in the Moldavia and relations after defeat under Saxon Horn in 1616 year. This time Turks caught Samuel Korecki and closed him in the prison. In the third part Poradowski prays to God for liberation and appeals to the knights or war enthusiasm. The purpose of the study is to capture the richness of work forms described in literature from An... more The purpose of the study is to capture the richness of work forms described in literature from Antiquity to the end of the 17th century. The dominant feature is the presentation of a work image in selected Old Polish works. Significant for the deliberations is the division verbalized by Sebastian Fabian Klonowic, who, following the ancient authorities, defined what activities can the nobility deal with and which of them did not belong to its state ethos. The study was divided into three parts. The first presents selected works constituting the state of researches on the issue. Second part presents chosen examples of descriptions and opinions about the topic of work derived from the Bible, mythology and the Classical Literature (especially works od Hesiod, Virgil and Horace). The aim of the study is to present at least three reasons why Old Polish writers of the latter ha... more The aim of the study is to present at least three reasons why Old Polish writers of the latter half of the 16th century and 17th century wrote about Venice. The first one was the admiration in the nobility-ruled republican political system which emerged in the Republic of Venice, and which was considered as an attractive model by Old Polish thinkers and writers. They, e.g. Palczowski, Górnicki, and Wolan, expressed their convictions in their treatises. The second reason was that of the struggles of Christian states with the Ottoman Empire. Venice constituted the first potential ally and often a leader of European armies intended to participate in the often-planned anti-Muslim crusades. The study references the accounts of the visions of Venice as a leader of crusades as inscribed in the exhortation-related literature. The third reason was the perception of Venice as a safe port for pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land and, more broadly, to the territory of the Ottoman state via the ...
Fr. Wojciech Danielski (1935–1985), a priest from the Warsaw archdiocese, is known as a researche... more Fr. Wojciech Danielski (1935–1985), a priest from the Warsaw archdiocese, is known as a researcher of the sacral national heritage. His research subject were historical liturgical books and the cult of saint Wojciech and Stanislaw related to them. He analyzed and described 752 liturgical manuscripts. One can note a particular combination of history and contemporary times, i.e. translations of prayers, hymns and songs. In other words he adapted to current Polish conditions what had been present in national and foreign literature for hundreds of years and which had been expressed in many languages and in many geographical areas. His scientific path was related to the Polish history and its reflection in liturgical books and to the liturgy history in the times of post-conciliar liturgy renewal. Now it seems worthwhile to ask two question: (1) to what degree fr. Danielski’s work which is de-voted to liturgy history and which also presented poetry created for its needs, particularly in the Middle Ages, is present in the scientific research after 1985 and currently. It should be asked in the context of saint Wojciech and the anniversary of his martyrdom, celebrations in Gniezno and related scientific publication; (2) to what extend liturgical texts, particularly the ones derived from the tradition and the ones present in the European liturgical culture which belong to widely understood Christian culture, starting from the late 1960s which were translated by fr. Danielski, are present now in celebrations and in confessional usage.

Próbują ją poznać, zbadać, oswoić, opisać, niektórzy może nawet zaprzyjaźnić się. Jedni postrzegają śmierć poprzez doświadczenia, przekazy, objawienie religijne, inni próbują zmierzyć się z nią sami. Rezultatem tych różnorodnych u swej genezy, ale też w swym przebiegu poszukiwań są dzieła literackie oraz inne wszelkiego rodzaju artefakty. Śmierć, w rzeczywistości nieuchwytna w swej istocie, jawi się w średniowieczu jako szkielet bądź rozkładające się zwłoki. Budząc przerażenie i szacunek zaprasza ludzi różnych stanów do swego tańca-danse macabre-tańca Śmierci. Straszy karą grzeszników, obiecuje rozkosze niebiańskie sprawiedliwym. Jest wpisana w porządek religijny. Twórcy renesansowi i barokowi zmagali się z tematyką śmierci w licznych utworach funeralnych świeckich i religijnych. Reprezentowały one przykładowo gatunki, takie jak: epicedia, treny, epitafia, kazania pogrzebowe i wygłaszane w rocznicę śmierci. Kreślono w nich przejmujące portrety zmarłych, dokonywano ostatecznych rozrachunków, przybliżano biografie, które starano się tak konstruować, by stały się modelowymi wizerunkami postaw godnych naśladowania. W barokowej epice romansowej napotykamy już piersze opisy śmierci samobójczej (Kupidyna w Nadobnej Paskwalinie Samuela Twardowskiego i nieudaną próbę w Sylorecie Wacława Potockiego podjętą przez Arsynę, która pragnęła uniknąć wykonania na niej wyroku śmierci), jak też zgonów licznych bohaterów męskich. Polskie oświecenie przeżywa śmierć, sięgając często po kostium antyczny (Orfeusz i Eurydyka), poznając zaświaty dzięki rozmowom zmarłych i wędrówkom żywych. Oświeceniowe pragnienie bliższego poznania tego, co po drugiej stronie zdaje się wyrastać z właściwej wcześniejszym cyklom funeralnym konsolacji, w której twórcy staropolscy udzielali głosu zmarłym, by ci pocieszyli pozostałych przy życiu, zapewniając, że po drugiej stronie jest im dobrze, doznają szczęścia, zasłużywszy na nie dzięki cnotliwemu życiu. W literaturze po przełomie romantycznym, zwłaszcza XX-wiecznej, część twórców, jak i bohaterów, obcuje ze śmiercią, rezygnując z perspektywy religijnej. Niektórzy poszukują jej świadomie, przeprowadzają eksperymenty, pragną ustalić, gdzie jest granica między życiem a śmiercią, niejednokrotnie ją celowo lub przypadkowo przekraczają, pozostając przy życiu bądź znikając na zawsze po drugiej stronie.

For the first part of the work, the basis for the edition must be the edition of the first part from 1660, published under the author’s control. For the second to the fourth part, the Kalisz edition was corrected by Alojzy Kowalkowski’s notes. The edition of Kalisz, as it was censored by the Jesuits from Kalisz for the needs of education in the colleges of the order, cannot constitute the basis for a new edition on its own. We only have the notes of Alojzy Kowalkowski, who compiled the manuscript with the Kalisz edition before World War II. As the individual copies of the Kalisz edition differ, relations between them should be established. Author invites young people to participation in the war. What is more, this part notifies about the death of Prince Michal Wiśniowiecki and Samuel Korecki. Poradowski laments and praises for deceased. Second part of the Wołoska Battle is a history of a struggle in the Moldavia and relations after defeat under Saxon Horn in 1616 year. This time Turks caught Samuel Korecki and closed him in the prison. In the third part Poradowski prays to God for liberation and appeals to the knights or war enthusiasm. The last part of the Wołoska Battle is a Latin poetry in form of echo. The purpose of the study is to capture the richness of work forms described in literature from An... more The purpose of the study is to capture the richness of work forms described in literature from Antiquity to the end of the 17th century. The dominant feature is the presentation of a work image in selected Old Polish works. Significant for the deliberations is the division verbalized by Sebastian Fabian Klonowic, who, following the ancient authorities, defined what activities can the nobility deal with and which of them did not belong to its state ethos. The study was divided into three parts. The first presents selected works constituting the state of researches on the issue. Second part presents chosen examples of descriptions and opinions about the topic of work derived from the Bible, mythology and the Classical Literature (especially works od Hesiod, Virgil and Horace). The aim of the study is to present at least three reasons why Old Polish writers of the latter ha... more The aim of the study is to present at least three reasons why Old Polish writers of the latter half of the 16th century and 17th century wrote about Venice. The first one was the admiration in the nobility-ruled republican political system which emerged in the Republic of Venice, and which was considered as an attractive model by Old Polish thinkers and writers. They, e.g. Palczowski, Górnicki, and Wolan, expressed their convictions in their treatises. The second reason was that of the struggles of Christian states with the Ottoman Empire. Venice constituted the first potential ally and often a leader of European armies intended to participate in the often-planned anti-Muslim crusades. The study references the accounts of the visions of Venice as a leader of crusades as inscribed in the exhortation-related literature. Fr. Wojciech Danielski (1935–1985), a priest from the Warsaw archdiocese, is known as a researche... more Fr. Wojciech Danielski (1935–1985), a priest from the Warsaw archdiocese, is known as a researcher of the sacral national heritage. His research subject were historical liturgical books and the cult of saint Wojciech and Stanislaw related to them. He analyzed and described 752 liturgical manuscripts. One can note a particular combination of history and contemporary times, i.e. translations of prayers, hymns and songs. In other words he adapted to current Polish conditions what had been present in national and foreign literature for hundreds of years and which had been expressed in many languages and in many geographical areas. His scientific path was related to the Polish history and its reflection in liturgical books and to the liturgy history in the times of post-conciliar liturgy renewal. Now it seems worthwhile to ask two question: (1) to what degree fr. Danielski’s work which is de-voted to liturgy history and which also presented poetry created for its needs, particularly in the Middle Ages, is present in the scientific research after 1985 and currently. It should be asked in the context of saint Wojciech and the anniversary of his martyrdom, celebrations in Gniezno and related scientific publication; (2) to what extend liturgical texts, particularly the ones derived from the tradition and the ones present in the European liturgical culture which belong to widely understood Christian culture, starting from the late 1960s which were translated by fr. Danielski, are present now in celebrations and in confessional usage.

Many researchers were interested in the diverse works of Marcin Paszkowski: historians of literat... more Many researchers were interested in the diverse works of Marcin Paszkowski: historians of literature, drama, Ukrainian historians and Orientalists. Their search of these subject were however dispersed and concerned personal patterns, funeral poetry, occasional poetry, volatile periodicals, the Orient, and translation of the Chronicles of Alexander Gwagnin. There is a multitude of evidence of the importance of the poet in literature of the first 20 years of the seventeenth century. Working — a monograph of Paszkowski is divided into four parts: the biography and works; an overview of the state of research; characterization of his work (in limited extent Turkish History and the activity of translation), here especially occasional works; and for civil education and religious persuasion, the last part being issues of imitation and compilation. This work revives the early seventeenth century literature's comprehensive silhouette, active in the Krakow community and belonging to current official literature and authoritarian poet.

The article aims to show the conflict that arises between the expectations of people who crave sleep and those who want to enjoy night entertainment. The activities of night guards that operated in cities serve to reconcile these interests. Stanisław Grochowski outlines such a situation in the poem The Complaint of Night Sleep. The article presents the rhetorical structure of the work, as well as the social situation of Warsaw at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries: it describes the night customs of Varsovians and newcomers, as well as the activities of the city guards. The work includes a querel of Sleep and a praise of King Sigismund III Vasa, who restores order to the city.
