Kolejne tomy serii mają wypełniać "rozważania nad teoretycznymi i metodologicznymi aspektami badań auto/biograficznych, a także systematyczne studia poświęcone mało rozpoznanemu dotychczas zagadnieniu auto/biografii naukowych" (s. 2). In the paper, we present the development of symbolic interactionism (SI) in Poland by tracing and... more In the paper, we present the development of symbolic interactionism (SI) in Poland by tracing and discussing its beginnings, as well as the influence the Chicago School had on the reception of SI in Polish sociology. Furthermore, we differentiate between two trends in the development of SI in Poland. One is connected with the early theoretical elaborations of the SI orientation and translations of classical books representing this perspective; another is linked with empirical work underpinned by SI concepts and the grounded theory approach in empirical research and data analysis. Stressing the importance of translations of classical texts of SI in its reception in Poland, we emphasize the role of field research and applications of SI concepts in sociological investigations that we shortly characterize.

The spirit of communitarianism and the cultural background of the Limoncocha community in the context of sustainable development and environmental protection

The aim of this article is to present the results of ethnographical studies of the Amazonian comm... more The aim of this article is to present the results of ethnographical studies of the Amazonian community Limoncocha (Sucumbíos, Ecuador), considering its cultural background in the context of sustainable development. Our scienti c purposes were to examine connections between Limoncochans’ values, lifestyle and objectives in the context of their business goals, which are important for maintaining biodiversity and nature protection in the region. In our research we were interested in the historical, social, economic and cultural conditions that underlie the development of this community. We discuss contemporary attitudes of its inhabitants toward civilizational progress, sustainable development and ways of social organization, as signi cantly in uenced by a unique way of settling down this community – formed by American missionaries from the Summer Institute of Linguistics (Instituto Linguistico de Verano) in the 1950s. The grounded theory methodology was used as an analytical tool for the elaboration of data, and we also implemented triangulation presumptions. We used several techniques of data collection: representative survey among Limoncocha parish inhabitants, over 30 in-depth interviews, photo elicitation interviews, documents’ analyses, and numerous quasi-participant observations. During our research we obtained strong evidence for a connection between the visible spirit of communitarianism and the entrepreneurship activities of locals, both of which affect regional development. Inhabitants represent strong egalitarian tendencies that have a visible impact on their business activities and the economic prospects of Limoncocha. The rst representative survey and our observations in this area gave us the possibility to formulate some recommendations for the Ecuadorian government and local authorities for implementation of cooperation model with the local community to achieve sustainable development protecting the natural environment.

Lucian may write as a philosopher-poet, and at times he is openly depreciative of those who adopt religious standpoints. However, Lucian also is a remarkably astute student of the human condition and, in important respects, anticipates what presently may be defined as a pragmatist, interactionist, or constructionist approach to the study of religion. 2 2 Like Durkheim (1915 [1912]), I begin with the premise that religion not only is a group phenomenon, but that religion also has its origins in and is maintained through group interchange (individualized notions of religion are extensions or variants of group-based religious thought and practices). Like Durkheim, Further, because Lucian discusses religion as a field of activity, he draws attention to the reality of as well, I define religious beliefs in reference to people's conceptions of "the sacred." Whereas notions of the sacred imply a division or separation between exceptional and mundane (profane) things, people's conceptions of the sacred also imply intense emotional sensations (as in awe, joy, sadness, fear, and anger) in conjunction with some phenomenon (potentially anything to which people collectively might attend). Moreover, the excitation associated with the sacred (including things considered exceptionally good, as well as evil) is linked to human experiences and activities. Thus, the sacred also is accompanied by a sense of force or agency that not only seems considerably greater than oneself and other mortal beings but that also can dramatically shape the things people experience. Although not fully understood, and certainly not fully controllable, this "greater than life force" is something with which humans in their comparative (group-based) states of dependency-with respect to this force-must contend. Still, while acknowledging the centrality of notions of the sacred for people's religious beliefs, I (like Durkheim 1915 [1912]) adopt the viewpoint that religion has no existence apart from the particular groups or communities of people who, through ongoing collective interchange, are/have been actively involved in developing and maintaining this belief system. From this standpoint, religion achieves a collectively experienced, behaviorally engaged, and emotionally involved realism.

The leading idea we relate to is “reverberations” of multidimensional experiences of war in Ukraine that started on February 24, 2022. The aim of the text is to show the multiple perceptual views experienced by people situated in a borderline situation. Uncertainty of tomorrow, prolonged fear for one’s own life and that of his or her loved ones, and an attempt to survive in an environment exposed to a “constant fire” are aspects of both wartime feelings and—indicated by them—reflexive thinking. Adopting a dual perspective of the immersion in experience as lived and then analyzing it in the process of collectively shared knowledge is treated as method of inquiry. The paper refers to the research Trash in the Wild: A Pilot Project Mapping Citizenship Environme... more The paper refers to the research Trash in the Wild: A Pilot Project Mapping Citizenship Environmental Activism in the Collaborative Study in the Lodz Area. In the study, inhabitants of Lodz (Poland) were invited to participate in data gathering and create a map of unauthorized dumps in their city. The collaborative mapping was intended to localize problematic spots in the city of Lodz, but it also shows civic commitment and the inhabitants’ ecological consciousness level. The authors based on ethnographic data (observations, walk-alongs, interviews, and data obtained from institutions), attempting to develop a situational analysis of the phenomenon of illegal dumps in the city. The analysis reveals how different positions of the City Guard, Municipal Economy Department, waste disposal companies, journalists, environmental activists, researchers, and citizens participating in the project vary their standpoints and views on the studied problem. The author attempts to answer the question of whether it is possible to move freely between the fields of analytic autoethnography and evocative autoethnography. Can rechercher freely combine analytical and evocative motifs within the framework of the autoethnographies he create? What are the fundamental differences between these approaches? What indicates the analyticality or the suggestiveness of the autoethnographic text? For whom and what are such divisions necessary? These considerations correspond to the practical problems appearing in the application of the autoethnographic approach in contemporary social research.

The paper refers to the research Trash in the Wild: A Pilot Project Mapping Citizenship Environme... more The paper refers to the research Trash in the Wild: A Pilot Project Mapping Citizenship Environmental Activism in the Collaborative Study in the Lodz Area. In the study, inhabitants of Lodz (Poland) were invited to participate in data gathering and create a map of unauthorized dumps in their city. The collaborative mapping was intended to localize problematic spots in the city of Lodz, but it also shows civic commitment and the inhabitants’ ecological consciousness level. The authors based on ethnographic data (observations, walk-alongs, interviews, and data obtained from institutions), attempting to develop a situational analysis of the phenomenon of illegal dumps in the city. The analysis reveals how different positions of the City Guard, Municipal Economy Department, waste disposal companies, journalists, environmental activists, researchers, and citizens participating in the project vary their standpoints and views on the studied problem. In this article, the author discusses the limits of analytical and evocative autoethnography as d... more In this article, the author discusses the limits of analytical and evocative autoethnography as described by the creators of these concepts and by scholars who embark autoethnographic projects. The author attempts to answer the question of whether it is possible to move freely between the fields of analytic autoethnography and evocative autoethnography. Can rechercher freely combine analytical and evocative motifs within the framework of the autoethnographies he create? What are the fundamental differences between these approaches? What indicates the analyticality or the suggestiveness of the autoethnographic text? For whom and what are such divisions necessary? These considerations correspond to the practical problems appearing in the application of the autoethnographic approach in contemporary social research.

Koneckiemu, mojemu mentorowi i partnerowi, bez którego wiele rzeczy byłoby niezwykle trudnych, a niektóre w ogóle niemożliwe, dziękuję za ogromną cierpliwość i wsparcie oraz za skierowanie mnie na ścieżkę badań nad światami społecznymi. To on pierwszy zasugerował mi Zastosowanie koncepcji społecznych światów jako temat referatu na Ogólnopolski Zjazd Socjologiczny w 2004 r. i od tego zaczęło się moje porządkowanie wiedzy na temat teorii światów społecznych. Za jego pośrednictwem poznałam też Adele E. Clarke. W chwili, gdy to piszę, uzmysławiam sobie, że ta historia ma jeszcze wcześniejsze początki, sięgające roku 1999, kiedy na konferencji w Magdeburgu poświęconej pamięci Anselma L. Straussa wysłuchałam referatu Adele E. Clarke poświęconego społecznym światom i arenom. Nie mogę zapomnieć, że na konferencji tej znalazłam się na zaproszenie oraz wyłącznie dzięki otwartości i pomocy Marka Czyżewskiego, któremu w tym miejscu za to dziękuję, oraz dzięki Suzsanne Kanitz, która mnie wtedy gościła u siebie w domu. Wiele drobnych zdarzeń składa się na obraz całości. Dziękuję wszystkim osobom, które znalazły się na ścieżce prowadzącej do napisania tej książki. Przede wszystkim jestem wdzięczna moim badanym, którzy podzielili się ze mną swoimi doświadczeniami i własną wizją wspinaczkowego świata, oraz osobom, które pomagały mi wejść do świata wspinania i go poznawać. Dziękuję Adamowi Pustelnikowi -wspaniałemu wspinaczowi i koledze klubowemu, którego nazwisko otwierało mi prawie wszystkie drzwi; Monice Niedbalskiej i Pawłowi Kopcie -moim pierwszym instruktorom, którzy wprowadzili mnie w świat wspinania; Pawłowi Pustelnikowi -mojemu instruktorowi na kursie AKG, za ogromną wiedzę, postawę etyczną i niezwykłą atmosferę procesu szkoleniowego; Andrzejowi Makarczukowi za wspaniałe wykłady w AKG i niesamowity klimat górskiej przygody, jaki w ich trakcie roztaczał, za pierwsze instrukcje ściankowe oraz porady co do lektur wspinaczkowych. To on pierwszy zaprezentował mi artykuł Lito Tejady-Floresa na temat gier, w które grają wspinacze. On też zabrał mnie na bunkry na Janówku, żebym mogła zobaczyć, jak wspinają się drajtulowcy. Podziękowania kieruję także do Andrzeja Wilczkowskiego, Bogdana Maca, Tomka Anteckiego oraz wszystkich moich wspinaczkowych kolegów, którzy poświęcili mi swój czas i cierpliwie znosili moje natrętne pytania. "Ludzie gór" AnALizA Społecznego świAtA wSpinAczki wprowAdzenie Szacuje się, że na całym świecie wspina się kilka milionów ludzi 1 . W roku 2002 Międzynarodowa Federacja Stowarzyszeń Alpinistycznych (UIAA), zrzeszająca wówczas 90 podmiotów organizacyjnych, ogłosiła, że reprezentowała interesy 2,5 miliona osób -alpinistów, wspinaczy i turystów górskich. W samych Stanach Zjednoczonych ze wspinaczką zetknęło się 4,5 miliona osób 2 . British Mountaineering Council podaje, że na Wyspach Brytyjskich jest około 76 tys. zrzeszonych wspinaczy 3 , ale działalność wspinaczkową podejmuje o wiele więcej osób nienależących do stowarzyszenia. W Polsce szacowana liczba osób, które zetknęły się ze wspinaczką, waha się między 50 a 70 tys. osób 4 . Dane te należy traktować z ostrożnością, biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że nie istnieją żadne oficjalne statystyki oddające liczbę wszystkich aktywnych wspinaczy oraz mniej aktywnych sympatyków wspinaczki 5 . 1 UIAA podaje: "na całym świecie miliony ludzi praktykują alpinizm, turystykę górską, trekking i wspinaczkę skalną […] w wielu krajach sporty górskie stały się znaczącym elementem codziennego życia" (UIAA 2007).

The album is conceived as a scientific monograph in which artistic and documentary visualizations of social phenomena are provided with a sociological commentary and are analyzed and discussed with the help of generic concepts and tools derived from visual studies, anthropology, and sociology. We try to present various dimensions of analyses of everyday life with a sociological and cultural reflection on their photographic visualizations.
The book consists of many photos that come from the exhibitions.

Książka jest ukłonem w stronę polskich hospicjantów i przedstawicieli opieki paliatywnej, którzy ... more Książka jest ukłonem w stronę polskich hospicjantów i przedstawicieli opieki paliatywnej, którzy z ogromnym oddaniem poświęcają się pracy na rzecz umierających i ich rodzin. Monograficzny opis tego środowiska społecznego, poszczególnym dawcom wsparcia może dostarczać nie tylko wskazówek dotyczących pojedynczych działań czy konkretnych rozwiązań organizacyjnych w sytuacji pomocowej, ale także umożliwia szersze spojrzenie na społeczny świat hospicyjno-paliatywny i własne w nim miejsce, dostarczając ,,społecznego lustra’’, w którym mogą zobaczyć siebie na tle innych działających podmiotów.

Fenomen społecznego wsparcia ma charakter uniwersalny i sam w sobie stanowi niezwykle interesujący obszar badań. Pomysł prześledzenia go na przykładzie relacji kreowanych w obszarze działań ośrodków paliatywno-hospicyjnych, narzucał się w związku ze specyfiką tych instytucji, których praca definiowana jest właśnie w kategoriach wspierania a sami uczestnicy w dostarczaniu pomocy wykazują niezwykłą pomysłowość, zaangażowanie i szczere oddanie swoim podopiecznym. Wybór opieki paliatywno-hospicyjnej jako obiektu badań nie był więc przypadkowy. Wiązał się także z dotychczasowymi zainteresowaniami autorki oraz doświadczeniami płynącymi z kilkuletnich kontaktów ze światem opieki paliatywno-hospicyjnej w Polsce.

Autorka podejmuje tematykę coraz bardziej popularnej działalności sportowej, rekreacyjnej oraz ho... more Autorka podejmuje tematykę coraz bardziej popularnej działalności sportowej, rekreacyjnej oraz hobbystycznej jaką jest wspinanie. Jest to działalność, która na tle innych aktywności fizycznych prezentuje się jako dziedzina elitarna, niebezpieczna i bardzo wymagająca, dodatkowo budząca liczne kontrowersje etyczne na skutek upublicznianych w mediach relacji dotyczących himalajskich, alpejskich czy taternickich tragedii. Jednocześnie opisywana wspólnota „ludzi gór” jest tu pretekstem do pokazania pewnych ogólnych zjawisk i procesów społecznych możliwych do uchwycenia przy pomocy teorii światów społecznych. Książka ukazuje złożone procesy tworzenia się i podtrzymywania światów społecznych na przykładzie analizy konkretnego społecznego świata – świata wspinaczki. Równocześnie stanowi prezentację efektywnych metod badania światów społecznych. Autorka zastosowała cały zestaw strategii analityczno-badawczych – od etnografii, przez autoetnografię, elementy metody biograficznej, analizy dyskursu po netnografię – podporządkowanych metodologii teorii ugruntowanej, by jak najpełniej opisać społeczny świat wspinaczy.

Oddajemy Państwu do rąk słownik, który jest odzwierciedleniem pewnej koncepcji socjologii jakości... more Oddajemy Państwu do rąk słownik, który jest odzwierciedleniem pewnej koncepcji socjologii jakościowej. Wszystkie terminy, które w nim się znajdują, zostały wybrane w sposób kolektywny podczas dyskusji grupy inicjatywnej z Sekcji Socjologii Jakościowej i Symbolicznego Interakcjonizmu Polskiego Towarzystwa Socjologicznego. Słownik ten jest odzwierciedleniem zainteresowań metodologicznych, badawczych i teoretycznych członków sekcji oraz osób skupionych wokół Przeglądu Socjologii Jakościowej (www.qualitativesociologyreview.org). Do projektu tworzenia słownika pięć lat temu zostali zaproszeni członkowie Sekcji oraz jej sympatycy. Zgłosiło się wiele osób. Uczestnicy projektu mieli wpływ na jego kształt, a szczególnie osoby, które napisały wiele haseł, i to one stanowiły trzon zespołu tworzącego słownik. Jest to zatem dzieło zbiorowe.
Prezentowany zbiór haseł nie jest słownikiem w klasycznym tego słowa znaczeniu. Nie pretenduje on do wyczerpującego przedstawienia wszystkich haseł z zakresu socjologii jakościowej i metod oraz technik badań jakościowych. Ponadto musieliśmy przyjąć także pewne ograniczenia związane z objętością haseł, które ze względu na popularność problematyki, do której się odnoszą, są mniej bądź bardziej rozbudowane. W trakcie prac nad słownikiem musieliśmy także rozwiązać problem tłumaczenia na język polski zwrotów anglojęzycznych. Zdecydowaliśmy się na umieszczenie w tytule hasła jego nazwy w języku polskim i angielskim, bez względu na fakt popularności którejkolwiek z nazw w polskiej literaturze socjologicznej. Po licznych dyskusjach w gronie autorskim zrezygnowaliśmy także z prezentacji w słowniku osób, by uniknąć kwestii oceny, kto powinien, a kto nie powinien znaleźć się w nim ze względu na swoje zasługi dla rozwoju socjologii jakościowej. Osoby te zresztą są pośrednio prezentowane w samych hasłach przedmiotowych.
