Effects of home factors and students’ classroom participation on the academic performance of senior secondary schools’ students in Lagos Nigeria

Home factors entails the objects, materials, parents, siblings, peers and social life that exists... more Home factors entails the objects, materials, parents, siblings, peers and social life that exists in the home in which the students find himself/herself. All the variables in the home that affect a child's existence, behaviour and performance constitute the home environmental factors, while student achievement refers to the extent to which a learner has attained their short or long-term educational goals. Individual differences in academic performance are strongly correlated with differences in personality and intelligence. The study examined the effects of home factors and students' classroom participation on the academic performance of senior secondary schools in Lagos, Nigeria. Consequently, four research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study, the study was limited to Education District I, of Lagos, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design, using a self-constructed questionnaire to collect data from secondary school teachers and students. The validity of the instrument was done by experts in sociology of education and measurement and evaluation, while the researchers administered the instrument to 30 students not involved in the main sample for pilot testing. The reliability correlation coefficient index obtained was 0.78. The data collected were analysed using simple percentage, t-test, Chi-square and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient method of statistical analysis. These statistics were used to demonstrate whether the variables are correlated or related. The findings of the study revealed that students' home factors affect their academic performance; teachers and the students have different perceptions of the relevance of home factors; and that a significant relationship exists between home factors and students' classroom participation. The study therefore concluded and recommended that education should be mounted for parents in our formal and non-formal education programmes in order to educate parents on their roles as parents in the education of their wards.

The study investigated the psychological correlates of career advancement among professional wome... more The study investigated the psychological correlates of career advancement among professional women in Lagos Nigeria. 360 professional women in Lagos Nigeria participated in the study. The random sampling technique was used for teachers, nurses and bankers, while snowballing purposive sampling was used for the engineers. The Career Advancement Profile adapted from the Attitudes toward Career Advancement Questionnaires by Rynes and Rosen (1983) and Workers Personality Profile (WPP) designed by Onwuechekwa (1990) was the main instrument used for the study. Chi-square test and ANOVA were employed to analyse the data, Where the Fvalue was significant post-hoc comparisons using the Scheffe's test (for unequal samples) was done. All findings were held significant at the 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that significant differences exist in career advancement among professional women of various marital statuses. A high percentage of professional women who were separated, divorced or widowed advanced more in their career than their married counterparts.

Particularly disturbing is the recurrence of ethno-religious violence, rampant electoral malpractices, dominance of former military rulers with questionable stupendous wealth, dominance of money politics, undemocratic practices among the ruling elites, widespread corruption, poverty, use of party/government machineries to cover illegalities and fraud, unresolved murder cases among others. As a res,ult of these, the future of Nigeria nascent democracy appears very blink. The paper identified education as a democratizing force that helps to prepare its products and recipients to participate in all aspects of democratic life. The paper therefore examines the role of education in a democratic society such as Nigeria and also illustrates how educational system can be utilized to sustain Nigeria nascent democracy.

The paper argues that this role has been defeated in Nigeria as result of different social problems facing Nigerian higher education. Particularly disturbing is cultism, the major contemporary social problem plaguing Nigerian educational system. Cultism portends enormous danger to the pursuit of education as activities of cultists are found to be destructive and damaging of human lives and career, thus, making the effect of cult related crises in Nigerian tertiary institutions to be gruesome and worrisome. The paper attempts to examine this problem and its effects on Nigerian higher education and also provides possible management strategies that will help in reducing or eliminating the recurrence of the social problem.

They are determinants of quality. Therefore, no matter how grandiose, innovative and imaginative the plans and programmes are the desired objectives may not be achieved without the right number of adequately educated and trained, dedicated and loyal, motivated and disciplined; committed and happy teachers serving at all levels of the educational system. The paper explains that teacher education which is at the centre of preparing teachers to enhancing educational development, equipping and educating individual in order to effectively perform his role as a teacher and involves the inculcation of the right attitudes, values, behaviours and methods, which enable him to be capable of transmitting the right information effectively to learners’ needs to be made relevant in this digital age. It can therefore be explained that more is demanded of teacher educator particularly during this period that Nigeria is clamouring for rebranding in all facets of our national life. The question of how quality entrant and capacity building could be model for rebranding teacher education in Nigeria is the subject of discussion in this paper.

Theorizing for both fields is somehow similar. This paper is an attempt to briefly present the supply-side and resource mobilization theories in the study of the sociology of religion and literature on social movements. This paper is a sort of a comparative analysis on the sociology of religion and literature on social movements. It presents a brief literature overview of the supply-side theory, and some examples of studies that have used this model; a brief overview of the resource mobilization theory; and finally, an assessment of the recruitment tactics and commitment levels in both of these fields of sociology.

The Effects of Information Communication Technology on Stock Market Capitalization: A Panel Data Analysis

The level of investment in information communication technologies (ICT) that may affect stock mar... more The level of investment in information communication technologies (ICT) that may affect stock market capitalization varies substantially across countries. Using data on 81 countries from 1998 to 2014, we use a country-fixed effects model to estimate the relationship between ICTs and stock market capitalization. Our empirical model is built on the premise that (1) increased deployment of ICT allows financial market participants to make more informed decisions at reduced inherent risks associated with deficient information or uncertainty in financial markets; and (2) increased access to and use of information communication technologies is expected to improve a country's economic fundamentals. The empirical results support our hypothesis that ICT expansions are positively associated with stock market capitalization.

In acknowledgment of his significant contributions to academia and society as a whole, the Higher Education Research and Policy Network (HERPNET) proudly acknowledge his outstanding dedication to education, specifically higher education. In commemoration of his well-deserved retirement from active service, we have authored and dedicated this book. As he takes his leave from the Nigerian Institute for Social and Economic Research (NISER) where he has tirelessly dedicated years to research, community service, and mentoring, we extend our heartfelt best wishes for his future endeavours. P Managing Higher Education and Research Institutes for Results iv Professor Professor Kolade Odekunle rof. Sunday Olukolade Odekunle embarked on his illustrious career journey at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) in Ibadan. His dedicated service to the institute commenced on the 30th of September, 1990, when he assumed the role of a Research Assistant. In 1991, he achieved a significant milestone by obtaining his master's degree. This accomplishment opened doors for him as he secured a scholarship to pursue a second master's degree in Development Studies in Germany. Upon his return from Germany, he embarked on a PhD program in 1995, culminating in a successful defense in 2001, supported by NISER Management. Prof. Odekunle's unwavering commitment and hard work propelled him through the ranks, leading to his appointment as a Research Professor in 2012. He reflects on his journey, reminiscing that when he received his letter of appointment, retirement was already on his mind. This foresight motivated him to remain focused, determined, and patient in his pursuit of his dreams. Academically, Prof. Odekunle's expertise is vast and impressive. He has imparted knowledge in various subjects such as Business concepts, principles, and theories, business management, insurance, human resources development and utilization, and the market environment, especially in relation to business enterprises. His teaching experiences span from the Polytechnic Ibadan Eruwa campus (NCE Technical) to both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in universities across Nigeria. Furthermore, he has delivered numerous courses and presented seminar papers on subjects like Entrepreneurship Development, Management Theories and Practice, Informal Sector, Small Scale Enterprises, and Promotion, both domestically and internationally.
