A global approach, which combines the different antimalarial measures with the bettering of the sanitary structure and a constant activity of a high level of scientific and medical research is the key to understand the reason of the success of the antimalarial campaigns in Italy.

Consequently, medicine tries to explain illness and health through the general rules of mechanics and chemistry. The development of medical systems - seen in terms of the two leading theories of iatrochemistry and iatrophysics, was centered around the problem of control in living objects, whose analysis is still useful in the present debate. Past and present are linked by a common effort towards the explanation of life phenomena, health and illness - despite the obvious methodological gaps of the different cultural periods.

Discussions highlighted how public policy decisions affect public funding for marine biotechnology research, and how and when scientists and researchers can most effectively participate in the public policy process affecting research, development and commercialization. The range of issues covered from economic and legal aspects to questions of social and ethical concerns. The key policy issue areas include access to marine resources/organisms, intellectual property rights, biosafety and regulatory approaches, coordinated efforts/national and international plans and academic/industry/government cooperation.

The choice of an experimental subject particularly suitable for a specific research field opened ... more The choice of an experimental subject particularly suitable for a specific research field opened the way for new discoveries and new theories. The sea urchin and the fruit fly, the material of choice for embryological and genetic research, symbolize two different research traditions. Knowledge regarding these animals was vast but largely separate, with little cross fertilization, so that by the '30s little was known about the genetic system of the sea urchin, and embryological studies of Drosophila were just beginning. This paper illustrates the reason for this disciplinary distinction. Embryologists concentrated on the relationships between nucleus and cytoplasm while geneticists of the "Drosophila Group" concentrated on the nucleus, focusing exclusively on the transmission aspects of heredity. T. H. Morgan's work forms a central focus, as he moved from an embryological concern to build a new scientific program of genetic transmission work.

The Macedonian front became an enormous experimental field for malaria research and especially for the evaluation of the therapeutic and prophylactic efficacy of quinine, as the traditional antimalanal activities (bonification, mechanical protection) were impossible to realize during the war. Furthermore, the war was the first in Europe after the 'golden age' of malariology the scientific discoveries on the malarial aetiology and transmission cycle. Those discoveries raised great hopes of getting rid of this millenary scourge, thanks to a few scientifically sounded prophylactic and therapeutic activities. The great epidemics during the war and the fear of new outbreaks of malaria after it broke down the optimist, pushing malariologists to reconsider the need for deeper epidemiological and scientific studies of malaria. The paper analyses three principal aspects of the relation between war and malaria: a) the impact of malaria on military operations; b) the impact of the war on the epidemiology of malaria in military and civil regions; c) the consequences of the experiences during the war on the antimalanal activities.

In the following two decades it became an innovative research project aiming at the description of the construction of the embryological structure and differentiation in biochemical terms. This research programme produced a vast amount of experimental evidence and theories on the chemical dynamics of the embryo: particularly chemical characterization of the zygote and the developing embryo, the chemical exchanges between the nucleus and the cytoplasm, the significance of subcellular structures, and the role and distribution of nucleic acids within the cell. From the 1950s on, a large part of these results came to be integrated into the empirical basis of molecular biology. However, the shift from chemical embryology to molecular embryology was not just a semantic shift but a deep theoretical change, produced by the introduction of a new model of scientific explanation, based on the transmission and expression of genetic information and opposed to the biochemical definition of life.

Starting from the economic definition of value and healthcare evaluation, efficacy and efficiency, it includes the equity dimension to define value-based healthcare. It embraces also the cultural framework associated to the concepts of health and disease, normal and pathological, right or wrong for the patient. The paper highlights that a prevention and recovery view and global evaluation of costs/benefits ratio for rare diseases make difficult and limited the applicability of the value-based approach to rare diseases. Since epidemiology of rare diseases identified a series of difficulties in applying value-based public health strategies to rare diseases, the paper underlines the necessity of new culture of health and well-being, radically re-examining how to organise the delivery of prevention, and healthcare services, and finding alternative ways of empowering and giving voice to vulnerable and marginalised groups.

In different scientific contexts, arrows have different meanings and in this particular case the arrows indicated the flow of information among different macromolecules. A deeper analysis illustrates that the arrows also imply a causal statement, directly connected to the causal role of genetic information. The author suggests a distinction between two different kinds of causal links, defined as 'physical causality' and 'biological determination', both implied in the production of biological specificity.
