Eric Davoine is Professor of Human Resource Management and Intercultural Management at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, board member (Vice-President from 2007 to 2014) of the association of French speaking HRM researchers (AGRH), co-director of university executive programmes in the field of HRM and Philosophy for managers, Member of the editorial boards of International Journal of Organizational Analysis, Journal of Organizational Effectiveness, Career Development International, Revue GRH, Management International, @grh. He has been Visiting professor at various universities and business schools including the University of Strasbourg, University of Paris Dauphine, University of Freiburg/Germany and ESCP Europe. He published several books and articles in the field of French-German Cross-cultural Management, on the transfer of HRM instruments in Multinational Companies and on global careers. He is currently carrying on with his team research projects on international mobility and integration of skilled migrants, as well as on HR practices and trends in the Swiss Watch industry.

Mais comment réintégrer les expatriés de manière à leur permettre de mettre à profit les compétences et les connaissances qu'ils ont accumulées à l'étranger ? Nous appuyant sur une revue de la documentation et sur une étude au sein d'une grande entreprise allemande considérée comme avant-gardiste dans ce domaine, nous présentons une synthèse des compétences qu'une expatriation permet d'acquérir. Par la suite, nous exposons trois grands axes d'action qu'une entreprise peut adopter pour gérer avec succès le retour de ses cadres expatriés, soit la gestion des carrières, le développement des interactions et la valorisation des compétences des expatriés.

In the process of internationalisation, companies are faced with the challenge of harmonising cor... more In the process of internationalisation, companies are faced with the challenge of harmonising corporate culture. The widely held idea is that a strong global corporate culture will strengthen the company’s identity and image, and reduce costs. This frequently means that the corporate culture of the parent company is transferred to the subsidiary. An overly ethnocentric approach by the company’s headquarters often complicates the reception of the new corporate culture in the subsidiaries, and creates misunderstandings and conflicts.

The number of expatriates from global firms has been continuously increasing over the past decade... more The number of expatriates from global firms has been continuously increasing over the past decades as multinational companies still view expatriation as an important tool for sharing and transferring knowledge, controlling subsidiaries and developing workforce competencies. Expatriate management is still a costly and complex task for multinational companies. Adjustment, which has been defined as an individual's degree of comfort, familiarity and ease with several aspects of a new cultural environment, is considered to play a central role in expatriation success. In a context characterized by the rise of dual career couples, the increasing number of female expatriates and the growing awareness concerning work life balance, private life issues are increasingly important for multinational companies. On the basis of 126 expatriate couples' questionnaires, this paper compares adjustment of male and female expatriates working in multinational companies in a specific host country environment: the Geneva Lake region in Switzerland where many MNCs have settled their European headquarters. Furthermore, our paper investigates the impact of two variablesgender and employment status -on adjustment of expatriate spouses.
