The city of Chur is the capital of Grisons, the only trilingual canton in Switzerland. Our study investigates to what extent the city of Chur is plurilingual, with regard to the three indigenous languages, i.e. German, Romansh and Italian. German is the main language of the canton as well as of Chur. Hence, we examine the use of the minority languages in monolingual families (both parents are Romansh or Italian speaking) and bilingual families (one parent Romansh or Italian, the other German), paying special attention to which language is transmitted from one generation to the next. Furthermore, we show the various possibilities of receiving bilingual education and we scrutinise the motives why parents opt for or against it. Finally, we explore to what extent associations for members (?) of the minorities and the cantonal administration, where people from all over the canton are engaged, provide an opportunity to use the minority languages.

As a minority language in Switzerland, the Romansh of the Grisons is exposed to pressure from the dominant language in its region, namely (Swiss) German. Consequently, it has not developed a generally accepted standardized written form, being above all a spoken language, which cedes many written functions to the dominant language. These premises entail a complex spectrum of language variation in informal written use of Romansh in SMScommunication. This variation includes deviations from regional written norms, traits of (dialectal) orality, interference of (Swiss) German, and code-switching to (Swiss) German. Language contact is evident in the fact that Romansh is used for part of an SMS whereas another part of the same SMS sent by the same person may be written in one or even in two varieties of the majority language, i.e. German and Swiss German. Some speakers of Romansh, mainly people who live outside of the traditional linguistic territory, do not write in Romansh at all. Mit diesem Terminus wurden auch die rätoromanischsprachigen Teilnehmenden unserer Erhebung in dem auf Deutsch verfassten Fragebogen konfrontiert, und sie verwendeten selbst diesen Terminus in ihren Bemerkungen. In der Wissenschaft wird "Rätoromanisch" zur Bezeichnung eines Typs romanischer Sprachen gebraucht, der neben dem Bündnerromanischen das in den italienischen Provinzen Bozen, Trient und Belluno gesprochene Dolomitenladinische sowie das im Nordosten Italiens gesprochene Friulanische einschliesst (cf. Liver 2010: 15). Die Sprachbezeichnung "Bündnerromanisch" wird jedoch im Alltag nie verwendet (sie verweist auch auf eine Sprachklassifikation, die für die Sprachbenutzerinnen und-benutzer nicht von Belang ist). Im Kanton Graubünden-nicht nur in der Alltagskommunikation, sondern auch in den Medien und in einem Teil der amtlichen Dokumente-lautet das Glottonym sehr unspezifisch schlichtweg "Romanisch". 2 Cf. dazu einige Hinweise am Schluss dieses Beitrags.

Im Bündnerromanischen beobachtet man in Lexemverbändenverstanden als Paradigmen von Wörtern mit identischer Wurzel (cf. LINKE et al. 2004:63)oft eine Überlagerung von erbwörtlichen und verschiedenen Lehnschichten. Weniger häufig ist Lehngut innerhalb von Wortformenparadigmen anzutreffen. Der in Lexemverbänden und Wortformenparadigmen erkennbare italienische Einfluss ist, wie der italienische Einfluss im Allgemeinen, in den engadinischen Varietäten (Puter und Vallader) am ausgeprägtesten. In den Varietäten des Rheingebiets (Surselvisch, Sutselvisch und Surmeirisch)-die mehr deutsches Lehngut, zahlreichere, oft durch das Deutsche vermittelte Gallizismen und tendenziell eher latinisierende als italianisierende Lautungen aufweisen 2-ist der italienische Einfluss auch in den uns interessierenden Bereichen geringer. Unser Beitrag befasst sich exemplarisch mit Entlehnungen aus dem Italienischen in Reihen von Präfixverben, in Wortpaaren von Verb und Verbalsubstantiv sowieinnerhalb von Verbalparadigmenbeim Perfektpartizip. Diese Bereiche stellen wir vor allem anhand des in Bezug auf den Sprachkontakt mit dem Italienischen besonders ergiebigen Belegmaterials zum Engadinischen dar. Unter Verbalsubstantiven fassen wir Substantive zusammen, die Vorgänge oder Ergebnisse bezeichnen und aus deverbalen Suffixbildungen (1) oder Konversionen (2, 3) hervorgehen, wobei letzteren der Präsensstamm (2) oder der Partizipialstamm (3) zugrunde liegt: 1) t. divertire ‹unterhalten› → divertimento ‹Unterhaltung›, engad. cumanzar ‹anfangen› → cumanzamaint ‹Anfang› 1 Dieser Beitrag präsentiert Ergebnisse des vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds und vom Institut für Kulturforschung Graubünden (ikg, Chur) unterstützten Projekts «Italianismen im Bündnerromanischen». 2 Zur Schichtung des bündnerromanischen Wortschatzes cf. Der Beitrag nimmt eine Bestandsaufnahme von Konstituentenfolgen in verschiedenen Typen eingeleiteter Nebensätze im Bündnerromanischen vor, die bisher kaum beschrieben worden sind. Im Bündnerromanischen gilt die Verbzweitstellung nicht nur im Hauptsatz, sondern auch im Kompletiv- und im Adverbialsatz, womit die für das Deutsche charakteristische Asymmetrie zwischen Hauptsatz- und Nebensatzkonstituentenfolge (Verbzweit- vs. Verbendstellung) wegfällt. In der älteren Sprache lässt sich allerdings regional eine Tendenz zur Verbendstellung im Nebensatz beobachten, die auf deutschen Einfluss zurückzuführen ist und auf die Schriftsprache beschränkt sein dürfte. Während in den rheinischen Varietäten die Verbzweitstellung strikt gilt, kennt das Engadinische sowohl im Haupt- als auch im Nebensatz die Verbdrittstellung. Ausser Kraft gesetzt wird die Verbzweitstellungsregel in allen Varietäten bei verkürzten Spaltsätzen, sowohl innerhalb von Hauptsätzen als auch innerhalb von Nebensätzen. Ein in...

This chapter deals with the two Romance languages which are officially recognized as minority languages of Switzerland, Romansh and Italian, and with Francoprovençal and French dialects spoken marginally in the francophone area of Switzerland. Romansh, the language that has gained new recognition in the process leading to the quadrilingual Swiss Confederation, is considered in most detail. The comparison of the Romance minorities shows the different starting conditions from which they have developed and the various initiatives undertaken to organize them at private and state levels. The last decades have been characterized by concerns about maintaining language territories, development of mass media in minority languages as well as promotion of minority languages in education. The trend towards a more ethnolinguistic conception of Switzerland has recently been counterbalanced by the greater attention paid to the promotion of minority languages outside their traditional areas
