Recent research highlighted the connection between commoning processes and the creation of new in... more Recent research highlighted the connection between commoning processes and the creation of new infrastructures of care in the areas of Southern Europe which were most affected by austerity policies and by the connected crisis of social reproduction. The objective of this paper is to shed new light on the caring practices organized through and within urban commons by using the theoretical lenses provided by Subaltern Studies, which also explored processes of collective self-organization, development of solidarity ties and reclamation of social welfare. The main theoretical reference is provided by the work of Partha Chatterjee on "The politics of the governed" (2004). The discussion is conducted through the analysis of the caring practices organized within the Scugnizzo Liberato, one of the urban commons of the city of Naples, located in Southern Italy, investigated trough a prolonged process of co-research.

This review addresses theoretical issues which are central to degrowth theory: the issue of limit... more This review addresses theoretical issues which are central to degrowth theory: the issue of limits and the values of idleness and frugality. It does so by bringing together two recent books written by authors which do not read each other, but nonetheless complete each other’s thinking incredibly well, offering very congruous interpretations of contemporary thought and ancient Greek philosophy. The selected books are Limits (Stanford University Press, 2019) written by Giorgos Kallis, and Sul piacere che manca (‘On the lacking pleasure’), by Paolo Godani (DeriveApprodi, 2019).

Postcolonial studies literature considered Neapolitan social centres as spaces of hybridization o... more Postcolonial studies literature considered Neapolitan social centres as spaces of hybridization of music styles from the global South, observing their deconstructing potential against racist discourse. More recent cultural production in Naples shows elements of continuity and innovation: organizing self-managed music festivals and mixing-up Latin American rhythms and sound system culture with folk music, Neapolitan social movements keep re-elaborating music genres of different Souths. The result is an original combination of resistant musicalities, vehicles for political messages. In the light of our active participation in these movements, we describe the evolution of the countercultural landscape of Naples, which is related to the evolution of Neapolitan urban commons. Italy is a country marked by serious inequalities between its northern and southern regions in te... more Italy is a country marked by serious inequalities between its northern and southern regions in terms of welfare, economic production and level of public services. Southern Italy has also suffered serious cases of environmental devastation. A body of literature with a postcolonial approach interprets these inequalities as the outcome of colonial relations of power that have made the south a historic victim of racist representations and authoritarian means of government. Another line of investigation is dedicated to the study of the socio-environmental conflicts which emerged in southern Italy in situations of environmental degradation. The objective of this article is to contribute to build bridges between these two lines of research, identifying the most relevant points of connection and divergence, with the purpose of showing possible paths of common research for a postcolonial political ecology of Southern Italy.

"Il rovescio della nazione aggiorna gli strumenti oggi a disposizione per leggere la questione meridionale, liberandola dal recinto di irrisolvibile "problema" locale. Le voci d’archivio del Risorgimento e della guerra ai briganti mostrano che l’idea di un Meridione barbaro e arretrato ha le sue radici nella storia del colonialismo europeo e nel suo repertorio di rappresentazioni. In questo intreccio pieno di sfumature troviamo un antidoto alle torsioni identitarie che segnano i nostri giorni a ogni latitudine, e impariamo a scorgere la possibilità che sia il sud stesso a narrare la propria storia"
