The book examines the Apocalypsis nova, the best-known prophetic text of the late 15th and early ... more The book examines the Apocalypsis nova, the best-known prophetic text of the late 15th and early 16th century, outlining its cultural milieu and the times of its writing and rewriting. The prophecy, whose fortune depended on the prestige of the blessed Amedeo Menez de Sylva (1420 ca.-1482), and on the legend surrounding the opening of this book, has the peculiarity of being imagined as the revelation by the archangel Gabriel of the ultimate truths that the pastor venturus was to promulgate for the reform of the Church. This peculiarity, and the postponement of the time of the book's opening, make the text a kind of chimera arriving at the time of Leo X, the prophecy's last imagined designate.

On the contrary, protection was grafted onto a bond of interdependence between individuals, who were thus introduced to the possibility of being educated to experience the community dimension as a constitutive element of the religious phenomenon. The juridical apparatus of the statutes, the forms of ceremonial and the visual signs generated by the life of the confraternities are a document of this solidaristic implication that drove people to gather in the organic unity of a body.
The subject of the study is a devotional miscellany published in Milan in 1639 as the work of a «... more The subject of the study is a devotional miscellany published in Milan in 1639 as the work of a «devout religious», but which can be attributed with certainty to the authorship of the Jesuit Gregorio Ferrari (1580-1659): a figure at the centre of the religious ferments of the city's community, whose commitment to the spiritual direction of nuns and lay penitents in search of perfection was already known. Based on the continuous alternation between poetic inserts and an apparatus of exegetical-edifying commentary in prose, the corpus of material offered by the Cetra delle divine lodi was intended to meet the support needs of a heterogeneous public, which found particularly strong agreement in the female devotee world, as documented by significant documentation on the fortune the text had known.

But this refocusing, which demolished the truth claim of pre-existing images and led to their 'discarding', did not explode in an instant. It was a laborious process of constructing a new general theory of the world we inhabit. Only painstakingly, with so many ups and downs, has the modern vision been able to push back into the corner the old 'Model' inherited from the culture of the ancients and the European Middle Ages, which by its persistent fascination has continued to influence the common mentality and the creative imagination of artists long after the discoveries of Copernicus, Galileo and their early heirs. Lewis takes a sympathetic look at this classic structure of reality built on the golden rule of the loving attraction of the parts and the whole. He investigates its sources. He dissects its most exciting and curious details, demonstrating its pervasive power, its tenacious capacity to resist changes in perspective and denials of fact. It was a bright, warm and hospitable cosmology. But it had a basic flaw: it did not correspond to the substantive framework of the infinite, centreless universe that has victoriously taken its place.

We have been confronted with a vulnerability that can always re-emerge in new forms, making us feel closer to the dramas we went through, with far fewer possibilities of defence, in the centuries left behind. The impact with the crisis is always fixed in the memory: it becomes a matter of chronicle, on which powers and institutions intervene, a plot of narratives that can become literature and history. The anthology we present retraces the most significant moments of this uninterrupted dialogue between diseases spread by contagion and the community of human actors. From Boccaccio's plague, passing through Guicciardini, Federico Borromeo, Muratori, Verri, Parini, Manzoni, De Amicis and other authors, we are led to the repercussions of the epidemics of smallpox, cholera and Spanish flu. The book concludes with an initial overview of the narrative repercussions of the Covid-19 epidemic, projecting us into the heart of an event whose effects cannot be forgotten because of their weight and global character.
The high Renaissance culture, as portrayed especially in Erasmus’ works, has not failed to call f... more The high Renaissance culture, as portrayed especially in Erasmus’ works, has not failed to call for an awareness of European Christianity’s state of health during the very Early Modern Age. It was able to defend itself from the threats that came from external entities linked to the expansive strength on the Mediterranean of the Ottoman Empire. At the same time, it highlighted the internal weaknesses provided, from one hand, by the increasing States’ political fragmentation and, from the other, as a result of the degenerative phenomena that were introduced into the collective religion. The tendency to re-emerge of the different perception between the secular and sacred fields was strictly related with the persistent fusion of these two gravitation forces within the social system, thus increasing the need for a constant self-reform of the Christian world.

Michiele al Gallo di Milano, accompagnati con alcune avertenze, et instruttioni intorno alla communione, et messa, et altri discorsi utilissimi ad ogni fedel christiano, in Venetia, appresso Nicolò Moretti, 1594), più volte riproposta in seguito e arricchita con aggiunte fino agli ultimi decenni del Seicento. Il volume divenne uno dei veicoli più efficaci per il modellamento della pietà eucaristica nell’Italia post-tridentina, generando anche significative interferenze con gli usi della coeva rappresentazione iconografica.

It documents the liveliness of the religious town tradition after the changes imposed by the reforms of St. Charles Borromeo, showing its deep social roots and its capability to nourish in manifold forms the identity of the social community. The main sources of this essay are the edifying book by the Capuchin Ignazio Carnago, Città di rifugio a’ mortali, che contiene le divotioni dell’altissima signora madre di Dio e vergine immaculata (1655); the pamphlet celebrating the foundation of the «Accademia degli Spensierati», edited by the layman Baldassarre Migliavacca (La cena, 1633), and the devoted biography of a canon, who died in the odor of sanctity in 1666 (Santa vita e morte del venerabile sacerdote Luigi Cantova, 1717), written by his Jesuit nephew Giovanni Antonio Cantova.

This book brings together a series of contributions, which have already appeared elsewhere and ar... more This book brings together a series of contributions, which have already appeared elsewhere and are presented here in an updated version, outlining the fundamental features of the inspirational culture underlying the welfare system in early modern Italy. The second part then dwells on the reality of the Milanese and Lombardy case. Particular emphasis is given to the networks of protection intertwined with confraternal associationism, in the various forms that the underlying religious matrix could take as it came into contact with the diversified complexity of social reality (devout confraternities, for 'national' groups, with charitable aims, confraternities of beggars, 'profane' corporate structures).

Starting from the legacies gathered from the pre-existing traditions, it has achieved discoveries and innovations that have enhanced an increasingly powerful and attractive development, that could establish difficult relationships with other cultures over the world. The final outcome completely diverge from original premises. The cultural code, composed by the system of thought, the body of rules and values that organize the society as a whole, has been deeply changed. But at the same time, it was also preserved the link that keep us related with the main core, on which the Western world has shaped its own material progress and the creation of an identity open to interrelations between multiple actors of global history.

The focus is on historical actors, places and circumstances in which clearly emerge the typical traits of the urban community. Its natural openness to the new and the spirit of assimilation were able to trasform Milan in the core of an extremely dynamic development based on funding values set on a huge tradition. And finally they allowed the city to gain a leading role as a European metropolis that accomplished a centuries-old historical vocation.
