Over the past decades, extensive research has been carried out to reduce the environmental impact... more Over the past decades, extensive research has been carried out to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the cement and concrete production. Life-cycle assessment (LCA) enables the quantification of the environmental loads and offers a useful perspective to scientifically support such studies. In this paper, we demonstrate LCA’s contribution to the selection of low environmental impact concretes, using breakwater coreloc components as a case study. A detailed experimental study was designed for the selection of an alkali activator for blast furnace slag (bfs) to produce concrete suitable for breakwater structures; for the evaluation of concrete properties and for the performance assessment of full scale elements in the field, as well as in the laboratory. Exploring life-cycle-based indicators for integrated sustainability assessment of buildings structural frames in concrete

Este artigo objetiva avancar na validacao de indicadores de sustentabilidade com base em ciclo de... more Este artigo objetiva avancar na validacao de indicadores de sustentabilidade com base em ciclo de vida de diferentes sistemas de laje, bem como investigar tendencias entre indicadores ambientais de um pavimento-tipo e da superestrutura. Tres edificacoes residenciais em lajes nervuradas em concreto armado (RCW) ou lisas protendidas (PCF) sao analisadas em ambiente marinho. Indicadores ambientais sao calculados com o apoio do software SimaPro 7.3. Estimativa de vida util e usada para garantir a equivalencia funcional e formar uma base para calculo de custos do ciclo de vida (CCV). Lajes PCF apresentaram melhores resultados tecnico-funcionais e economicos, mas os ambientais foram superados pelas lajes RCW. A maioria dos indicadores ambientais mostrou a mesma tendencia no pavimento-tipo e na superestrutura.

Taking into account that Brazil possesses 84% of its population living in cities and that transpo... more Taking into account that Brazil possesses 84% of its population living in cities and that transportation constitutes a significant portion of the urban cost matrix, balancing city growth, energy consumption and transportation (including maintenance and operation of the road system) represents a great challenge to be overcome. Though 65.2% of the Brazilian electricity mix is based on hydropower, the country has faced strong unfavorable hydrological conditions. This research hence had the overall objective of investigating solar energy potential to supply renewable energy for residential and public transportation end-uses.
