The present paper deals initially with the difficulties inherent in studying the direction of lex... more The present paper deals initially with the difficulties inherent in studying the direction of lexical borrowings in seafaring and marine vocabulary over long periods of time both within and outside Romance. The problem of whether marine metaphors are originally land-based or not is also tackled. From these more general problems, in which an attempt is made to tackle some thorny etymological issues, the paper passes to consider the nature and formation of Calabrian marine lexicon and the fact that it seems to be largely borrowed. The sources of these borrowings are investigated

In historical times they are the most intensive seismic events in their respective epicentral areas. so that the reconstruction of their effects is very important for the analysis and assessment of seismic risk. They strongly influenced, moreover, the development of the economy and socio-cultural status of many urban communities. A study of these shocks has been carried out and has implied a thorough re-evaluation of the historical sources of information already known and the exploitation of possible new sources. That Greek was spoken in Calabria, that the number of Gk. speakers in the late Middle Ages was co... more That Greek was spoken in Calabria, that the number of Gk. speakers in the late Middle Ages was considerably larger than in the last century, the Gk.-speaking population denser, needs no proving 1. Hence Calabrian Romance owes much to Greek substratum, though no-one in his right mind would deny Calabria is a Romance-speaking area. Over the last 150 years the unjustifiedly partizan debate over whether this substratum and modern Calabro-Gk., in its death throes, is Neo-Doric, like Tsakonian, or of Byzantine origin but peripheral like Cypriot and Dodecanese Greek, hence archaïsing, has proved a stumbling block to any discussion involving contact linguistics over the Central-Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans. The Byzantine-origin hypothesis was first argued by August Pott 1856 and pursued by later Italian scholars (Comparetti, Morosi, Astore Pellegrini), as analysis of Calabro-Apulo-Gk. and its influence on Romance got under way. The Greek scholar Hatzidakis (1890-1892) first contested this with his Doric continuity theory. From the 1920's on Germans such as G. Rohlfs, after much summer vacation research and in-depth investigation (AIS) in a small but relevant number of points, took up cudgels to defend Hatzidakis' conservationist theory. In defence of the Byzantine-origin hypothesis Rohlfs was vigorously contested by Carlo Battisti, later by Giovanni Alessio, who were then attacked in unbecoming denigratory terms by Rohlfs. This was in the fifties taken up by Oronzo Parlangèli. Hatzidakis' arguments and Rohlfs' elaboration were then supported by Kapsomenos, by Caratzas in his 1958 book, and later in Tsopanakis' work. Phenomena like the conservation of geminate consonants, non-infinitival strategies, verb morphology and tense use, as well as lexicon, made up the bulk of the argument, though Caratzas showed much insistence on lexical issues by Rohlfs implied a lack of knowledge of Gk. dialectology and Middle Gk. variation. He (1958: 197) argued the presence of triv v fw (= triv v bw), rJ J ov v dh 'rose' and meletw' did not demonstrate anything archaic in particular, that many claimed archaïsms were well represented in Middle Gk. and modern Gk. dialects. Although Tramper and Maddalon (forthcoming) attempt to show that this is not the case, most Italian scholars seem to disagree. Before presenting my own data I think it worthwhile to discuss the use of, and interaction between, varieties in the typically Italian Situation of lingua cum dialectis, which differs substantially from bidialectalism in the English-speaking world and can give rise to serious misunderstandings. Berrato (1984) rightly says that there is still insufficient work on code switching in Italy, notwithstanding Berrato (1985) or Tramper (1984), inter alia. Recently Berrato (1985, 1986) has called for an adequate theory to explain everyday Italian interaction; his own proposals are based on analysis of samples of relatively spontaneous but short-term conversations and verbal exchanges. He admits to some understandable perplexity äs regards such highly comprehensive categories äs code switching or situational versus metaphorical switching (see Canepari 1975; Auer 1984; Tramper 1984, and comments in Berrato 1985). The problem is complicated by the lack of an adequate corpus of long-term spontaneous interactions recorded over hours, days, and even months. All would-be theorists have to build on is a series of more or less informal interactions lasting at most a couple of hours. Moreover, the problem goes beyond the strictly linguistic. It involves psychological, social, and even economic concepts such äs 'linguistic markets' and 'linguistic socialization': see Schlobinski's comments (1987, 1988) on a phenomenology that really goes far beyond the limits set by Labov's 'status-based model' (äs exemplified in
