Investigating multifunctionality through a structured model, grounded on spatial statistics and applied to spatial data on ES provision, can therefore lead to identifying areas of territorial specialization. By applying the model to Sardinian municipalities, this study shows that ESs are provided in bundles, and that some ESs compete with other, hence plan-making processes should carefully assess such trade-offs, as actions aiming at their enhancement can be detrimental to other ESs.
The planning activity of the regional administration of Sardinia (Italy) has undergone a deep cha... more The planning activity of the regional administration of Sardinia (Italy) has undergone a deep change after the approval of the Regional Landscape Plan (RLP), which establishes the directions for nearly any future planning activity in Sardinia, and requires that actual sectoral and local plans, as well as plans for protected areas, be changed to comply with its directions. This mandatory adjustment process can be conflictual, if the administrations responsible for these plans disagree with the rules established by the RLP. With regards to Sardinian coastal cities, this paper analyzes the investment policies for public services and infrastructure implemented by the Sardinian Region through the 2000-2006 Regional Operational Program (2000-2006 ROP-ERDF), in order to assess whether the RLP exerts a negative impact.
This article focuses on the role that the provisions of the Natura 2000 Network play in affecting... more This article focuses on the role that the provisions of the Natura 2000 Network play in affecting land-taking processes by looking at the Italian region of Sardinia, where strict rules on land development have been enforced since 1993 through regional landscape plans and where an extensive Natura 2000 Network, covering nearly 19% of the regional land mass, was established in compliance with Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora and Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds. The results and inferences of our study could be easily generalized to other European Union regions, provided that similar geographic datasets are available. By shedding some light on the relation between land take on the one hand, and nature conservation and landscape protection on the other, it is possible to enhance regional planning policies to prevent or hinder land-taking processes, and, by doing so, to help implementing the European Commission recommendation on no net land take by 2050 into the EU regional policies.

This work shows a research approach aiming at enhancing standard methodologies oriented to interp... more This work shows a research approach aiming at enhancing standard methodologies oriented to interpret places, by using information coming from new forms of place interpretation and description. This proposal is developed by investigating on geographical places as complex spatial environments well suited for the exploitation of different paradigms. The approach is based on ontological analysis. It can be useful to integrate a cognitive stand within the traditional analytical and organizational views of complex spatial environments, in particular aiming to facilitate decision-making processes. In this context, the argument of the paper has a twofold implication. Certainly, the introduction of ontological layers is rather useful for organizing the modelling of complex systems. Yet, while these layers are informative, our understanding of space cannot be reduced to the ontological elements per se, as they may lack a contextual perspective. Deeper studies and research are then needed to develop formal frameworks that effectively integrate standard and ontological methodologies for general modelling purposes in environmental planning.

Much research has recently focused on quantitative measurement of land take at both the internati... more Much research has recently focused on quantitative measurement of land take at both the international and the national level, so much so that systematic information has been collected and made available at the EU level. However, not much literature has up to now explored the quantitative relationship between factors affecting land take and land-taking processes. Moreover, still little investigated is the relation between land-taking processes and territorial policies.
By building upon previous studies on the identification of the main drivers of land take and on the analyses of the influence of such drivers on the phenomenon, this paper aims at understanding whether spatial planning and territorial policies are capable of, and effective in, hindering land taking processes.
We choose to explore this issue by looking at two coastal Italian regions, as coastal areas’ intrinsic territorial fragility and residential polarization might significantly amplify the magnitude of negative impacts associated with land take.

Il presente volume raccoglie gli atti della terza edizione del Convegno "Ricerca in Vetrina" che ... more Il presente volume raccoglie gli atti della terza edizione del Convegno "Ricerca in Vetrina" che si è tenuto presso l' Aula Magna "Gaetano Cima" dell'Università degli Studi di Cagliari nelle giornate del 6 e 7 dicembre 2018. L' evento, promosso dalle sedi di Cagliari e Sassari dell' Associazione Dottorandi e Dottori di Ricerca Italiani (ADI), mette al centro il lavoro che dottorandi e dottori di ricerca non strutturati svolgono ogni giorno all'interno delle università italiane, con l' obiettivo di valoriz-zarne il contributo e creare una piattaforma conoscitiva e di dialogo tra accademia, istituzioni, imprese e società civile. "Ricerca è democrazia" è il tema proposto per questa edizione in cui sono state coinvolte alcune delle più importanti associazioni impegnate sul campo-Amnesty International, Libera, ASVIS, AISA, CSV Sardegna-al fine di riflettere, in questo momento storico di grave crisi delle democrazie mondiali, sul ruolo della ricerca come forma di "attivismo sociale" con forti implicazioni nella costruzione di un futuro equo e sostenibile. Come motore dell'innovazione, infatti, la ricerca può divenire uno strumento strategico per favorire il dialogo interculturale, incorag-giare la tolleranza, garantire pari opportunità, promuovere lo sviluppo di contesti svantaggiati e politiche di benessere per le generazioni presenti e future. Sono queste alcune delle questioni affrontate durante il convegno dai ricercatori esperti di diverse discipline, provenienti da nove università italiane: Cagliari, Sas-sari, Roma "La Sapienza", Roma Tre, Firenze, Perugia, Verona, Bari e Catanzaro. Tutti i contributi presentati-suddivisi in tre sessioni tematiche interdisciplina-ri: Sviluppo, risorse e ambiente; Il passato e la sua eredità; Connessioni e reti-evidenziano, secondo molteplici approcci e prospettive, un articolato quadro di conoscenze teoriche e sperimentazioni empiriche che sottolineano la dimensione tecnico-applicativa e il valore etico della ricerca per la democrazia.
