Nel contesto globale le dimensioni economico, politico, normativo e sociale si influenzano vicend... more Nel contesto globale le dimensioni economico, politico, normativo e sociale si influenzano vicendevolmente più che in passato; i governi e le imprese nel perseguire i propri obiettivi particolari, devono operare in maniera sinergica, “a sistema”, con gli altri attori della scena globale (nazioni unite, ong, cittadinanza attiva, sindacati). I diritti umani diventano quindi per governi e imprese leve strategiche per il soddisfacimento dei propri interessi politici ed economici. Integrando i diritti umani nella propria strategia (in termini di cooperazione i governi, con la CSR le imprese), potrebbero altresì contribuire a fare in modo che lo sviluppo del sistema globale possa tendere verso l’equilibrio economico e sociale. Non si puo prescindere quindi dall'inclusione dei governi e delle imprese nel perseguire la tutela internazionale dei diritti umani,la cui responsabilizzazione è uno dei principali obiettivi della strategia delle Nazioni Unite. 1. La missione del GBS è rivolta allo sviluppo e alla promozione della ricerca scientifica sul Bilan... more La missione del GBS è rivolta allo sviluppo e alla promozione della ricerca scientifica sul Bilancio Sociale e sulle tematiche inerenti ai processi di gestione responsabile di imprese al fine di favorire la diffusione della responsabilità sociale aziendale e la sua applicazione nei contesti nazionale ed internazionale. In coerenza con la stessa mission, il GBS intende, pertanto, proseguire nella funzione di standard setter nazionale, proiettandosi verso una dimensione internazionale ove si assiste a una proliferazione di standard, framework e linee guida non sempre in linea tra loro. In tale scenario è indispensabile che il GBS prosegua nel solco del rigore metodologico e della impostazione scientifica, intercettando le nuove tendenze nel campo del social accounting e del non financial reporting attraverso un processo di inclusione "di tipo istituzionale" che guardi sempre di più al mondo delle professioni. Ad oggi il GBS può contare su: ▪ un numero complessivo di 115 soci, tra fondatori, sostenitori, ordinari, università ed enti di ricerca; ▪ una produzione scientifica che annovera 3 standard, 15 documenti di ricerca e 1 position paper, a cui vanno a sommarsi gli articoli scientifici e monografie, in numero cospicuo, pubblicati dai propri associati che hanno saputo valorizzare i momenti di confronto e le attività di ricerca condotte all'interno dello stesso GBS; ▪ un numero elevato di workshop e attività convegnistiche legate a temi quali, tra gli altri, la responsabilità sociale d'impresa e la rendicontazione sociale in ambito pubblico e privato; ▪ un avvicendamento continuo di gruppi di ricerca che hanno contributo attivamente al dibattito scientifico-professionale puntando, da ultimo, su temi quali: SDGs e reporting aziendale, riforma del terzo settore, rendicontazione sociale ed Università.
This paper aims to analyse ''how'' and ''why'' a company engages in CSR and sustainability. The '... more This paper aims to analyse ''how'' and ''why'' a company engages in CSR and sustainability. The ''how'' concerns the features of the firm's CSR and sustainability approach, defined in terms of a firm's strategy (implemented issues, initiatives and activities) and organization (organizational structures and roles and managerial systems adopted). The ''why'' refers to the key determinants, both internal and external, of CSR and sustainability. Finally, how the firm's CSR and sustainability approach evolves over time and the relation between CSR determinants in various stages of the CSR evolutionary path are also investigated. The research method is based on the longitudinal analysis of a case study concerning a large multinational company operating in the telecommunications industry in Europe. The analysis of the case study shows that sub-cultural differences in the approach to CSR and sustainability may occur across hierarchical levels and functional units. Moreover, embedding CSR and sustainability principles doesn't follow a linear and continuous process, made by sequential stages. Indeed, it can be characterized by an up and down evolutionary path, based on different stages with a changing emphasis given to CSR and sustainability issues. Finally, we find that the firm CSR and sustainability approach is not an autonomous choice, but it is a consequence of the contingent role played by both the external and the internal drivers and by their relative importance during the company's CSR history.

It is in large measure the product of three-year research in which the author has observed and investigated the global context, in which economic, political, legal and social factors influence each other even more than in the past. During this time the author has had relevant experience with government bodies and multinational firms, on economic and social issues, with the aim of understanding their functioning and looking for the correct balance between Economic and Political Affairs, and respect for Human Rights. We are currently observing an apparent paradox. On the one hand there is growing evidence about c... more We are currently observing an apparent paradox. On the one hand there is growing evidence about corporate misbehaviour and Multinational Corporatio ns (MNCs)’ violations of human rights. On the other, the largest MNCs are showing an unprecedente lev l of commitment to “save the world” through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and investments. In this scenario, how much does CSR contribute to curb human rights abuse s of the largest worldwide MNCs? This paper investigates this question using a novel dataset of 135 MNCs operating in several sectors over the period 1990-2006. We apply Probit estimations to ou r data and show that MNCs that have adopted CSR initiatives have higher probabilities of being volved in alleged human rights abuses, but such probability decreases over time, as they accumulate exp rience in CSR. This result is found for human rights abuses for which MNCs are directly held acco untable, whereas our evidence suggests that CSR experience does ...
