Oodgeroo Noonuccal's My People is considered a classic of postcolonial literature, in that it reconstructs the memory of an older Indigenous past and intertwines it with official and hegemonic Australian history. The first critical edition in Italian of her 1970 anthology, which gives voice to the experiences of Australian Aboriginal people, is now available to the Italian reader thanks to the thorough work of Margherita Zanoletti. The volume My People, La mia gente (Mimesis 2021) featuring the original poems by Oodgeroo alongside the Italian translation, includes a detailed introduction, an extensive glossary, and a text by Alexis Wright suggesting that Oodgeroo's poetry can crack the nexus of indifference that characterizes these times of planetary rupture. In introducing her poems to the Italian audience, Zanoletti highlights the fusion of protest and language as well as the profound communicative intent of Oodgeroo's poetry and takes into consideration her own experience of translation.

Building upon the groundbreaking work of environmental humanities scholars such as Heise (2008), Clark (2015), Trexler (2015) and Ghosh (2016), who have emphasised the main challenges faced by authors of climate fiction, it considers the novels as an entry point to address the climate-related crisis of culture-while acknowledging the problematic aspects of reading Indigenous texts as antidotes to the 'great derangement'-and the danger of a singular Anthropocene narrative that silences the 'unevenly universal' (Nixon, 2011) responsibilities and vulnerabilities to environmental harm. Exploring themes such as environmental racism, ecological imperialism, and the slow violence of climate change, it suggests that Alexis Wright's novels are of utmost importance for global conversations about the Anthropocene and its literary representations, as they bring the unevenness of environmental and climate crisis to visibility.

Firstly, I will argue that literary representations of climate change can be complicit in producing hegemonic strands of Anthropocene discourse that consider human destructiveness and vulnerability at undifferentiated species level. Secondly, I will suggest that the novel's apocalypse reveals the processes of colonial violence and dispossession that have culminated in the eruptive event of environmental catastrophe, rather than portraying a story of universal and disembodied human threat that conceals oppression against Indigenous people.

Although women are on the frontline of the Covid-19 response, as health-care workers and caregivers, they have less decision-making power than men in pandemic planning and post-pandemic recovery, and their voices and experiences go unheard. This article considers Larissa Lai’s visionary novel, The Tiger Flu (2018), as an entry point for conceptualising the gendered nature of the current Coronavirus emergency. A novel about the world to come, after climate change and mass death, The Tiger Flu brings women’s voices to the forefront of a flu pandemic that has jumped from animals to humans. By creating a world where men are vulnerable and women survive, Lai consciously writes against traditional end-of-world narratives that tend to rely on tiring gender narratives based on the tension between active male heroism and female fragility. Furthermore, The Tiger Flu explores the intersectional experiences of a global disease outbreak and imagines a new beginning from the viewpoint of queer voices of colour from marginalised communities. A feminist framework will be employed to shed light on the ongoing possibilities of life in the wake of patriarchy, environmental change and capitalism’s consumptive force.

The workshop will begin with a conversation with artist duo Geissler and Sann, showcasing their installation "How Does the World End (for Others)?" currently on view at Fondazione Prada. Scholars Alison Sperling from Florida State University and Chiara Xausa from the University of Bologna will delve into the connections between climate fiction, speculative arts, and the role of imagination in shaping our perceptions and actions.
How can creative practices contribute to new ways of thinking about climate futures? What do speculative approaches reveal about the variety of possible worlds and futures? And how can narratives in climate fiction orient our collective efforts toward greater social and climate justice?
By bringing together critical thinkers and creative practitioners, this workshop seeks to employ a multidisciplinary approach to speculative imagination, effectively bridging academic and artistic discourse
